AppDynamics is great tool to monitor Infra, APIs and to get custom alerts
What do you like best about the product?
AppDynamics is a great tool to monitor infrastructure, from servers to database and API endpoints or business transactions. AppDynamics is super easy to set up; all we need to do is set up a client on the infrastructure we need to monitor; it can be connected seamlessly with the application, such as spring boot just specifying the tier. And the dashboard appears immediately. It's even great too to visualize how the request is moving into different micro-services. We can set up other alerts and exceptions and set up actions when the triggers are hit, from sending mails to the running script. All the options are organized.
What do you dislike about the product?
Though it runs as a client on the nodes which we want to monitor, it does have little control over the infrastructure. It is only used as a monitoring tool and brings out all the stars, such as memory usage, disk usage, etc. It does not have control over starting or stopping the instances on which runs. A self-heal feature is mandatory rather than calling an external action to perform these tasks. Also, for the business transaction monitoring, it can send out an exception, but not the request body for which the exception has occurred. As a developer, the complete stack trace is not sent, and the exception class is sent.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have developed a caching solution using Hazelcast Distributed Cache, and we have multiple nodes running for different micro-services. We are trying to monitor the usage of all the business transactions; how much time does it take to call out a particular API endpoint since all the microservice has their tier name. We see how the transaction moves across different components. We also have set up custom health rules so that the support team can make a decision. E.g., if JVM usage is > 80%, we get warning alerts; if it crossed >90%, we get critical alerts, call out a specific action, etc. We also use AppDynamics to monitor our database transaction time and nodes usage.
