Openshift makes Container Management with Kubernetes Simple

  • July 17, 2018
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ease of uploading is definitely a huge plus. By creating an Openshift cluster on one VM you can locally create images and immediately have them accessible and scalable in a matching web-based UI.
What do you dislike about the product?
Openshift clusters don't have clear logs upon failure and require going deep into the structure of your docker files without much clarity. Some better automated logging on the web interface would go a long way to improving the software as a whole.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Implementing secure containerization of micro-services for hundreds of thousands of VMs. These services must be scalable in order to meet user need fluctuation.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I recommend that anyone planning to use Openshift acquaint themselves with the Docker and Kubernetes documentation and be sure that they have experience creating Docker images of course. I think it is a great secure combination of these two open-source softwares from Red-Hat. Additionality I think the UI adds value in the right ways though it could have more information and data for administrators and users to understand errors. Overall, Openshift is a successful software stack for companies that require certified software and want to move to containerization. It is easy to use with repositories and it's secrets and volumes are easy to adapt to and get to know how to use. With limited knowledge of the documentation you can get several containers up and running and scaling within 20 to 30 minutes. Internal documentation is of course key for getting to know the software better in it's use at your company.

Scalable and Easy to Use

  • June 17, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Openshift has an intuitive easy-to-use web interface. It is free (for low use) and easy to deploy. It integrates with Git and a wide variety of tools, frameworks, and languages.
What do you dislike about the product?
Lack of storage accessibility for auto scaled gears. There needs to be more GUI based management. Reconfiguration after changing node host names was a bit arduous.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Container storage with support for dynamic storage provisioning. OpenShift provided a platform to allow for scaling using specific services and enhanced the performance of the application features.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try it. For a small quantity, it's free. It's very easy to use.

Kubernetes for Enterprises!

  • May 20, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Strong compliance with the base Kubernetes APIs which allowed us to get our own K8s-oriented Integration Platform (https://www.adroitlogic.com/products/ips/) working on OpenShift as well, with less hassle
Hassle-free, wizard-driven installation
Strong by-default security and permission model
What do you dislike about the product?
Lack of documentation in certain aspects such as the relaxing of certain security enforcements
Necessity of a Red Hat Customer Portal account for installation
Unavailability of a reusable, offline installer
Reconfiguration (e.g. after changing the hostname of a node) seemed to be overly complicated
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Used as one of the key orchestration platforms supported by our own Integration Platform (https://developer.adroitlogic.com/ips/docs/17.07/overview/)
OpenShift subscription provides our clients with orchestration platform-level support so we can focus solely on providing support for our own integration platform
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Review your requirements and see if OpenShift Online (as-a-service) version suits you better; it might be less hassle to get started.
Also consider OpenShift Origin or bare Kubernetes if you don't think you would be needing extensive support.
Before purchase, use Red Hat's no-cost Developer Subscription to evaluate the product and see if it meets your expectations. (it most certainly would!)

Get really familiar with the workflows to understand the concepts

OpenShift for Web Hosting

  • April 11, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Open Shift provides new actively subscribed user with a starter account that comes with 1GiB of memory and storage for a single project space and open community support. Additionally, they provides a really quick and helpful response to any questions you may have within a few business days which reflects great customer service.
What do you dislike about the product?
Just recently, Open Shift switches from basic JBoss Web Server with Apache Tomcat 8 to a more complex and secure project setup using https that requires certificate and key setup. Without any experience in TLS Termination and SSL certificates it may be difficult for someone who is new to deploying web applications.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Research new technologies for hosting web applications in a tomcat server. The benefit that came with this research discovery is that this cloud platform is a great choice for new starters learning deployment of web applications in a cloud environment. Also great for small business owners interested in starting a new website!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Highly recommend Open Shift as a consideration for deploying your own web application that is accessible to anyone with connection to the World Wide Web (WWW). However, I would suggest anyone without experience in SSL Certificates to learn the material before attempting deployment using the tomcat server option.
