What do you like best about the product?
It was really important for our company to be able to manipulate geospatial data in an easy to use way. Carto Builder was exactly what we needed to be able to make small changes to our geometries, on the fly, from just about anywhere.
What do you dislike about the product?
We tried downloading information from a Carto table that included geometry data to add some columns to the data set. This wasn't something easily done in the Carto browser, so needing to export the data and do it on our end was necessary. For whatever reason, when trying to upload the newly manipulated data set, half the geometries would be corrupted and invalid. We ended up needing to figure out the right combination of SQL queries to add the missing columns from another set to the desired one and rename the table we were working with.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are using Carto to visualize police jurisdictional boundaries on our end and ensure that we have them correctly drawn. We care very much about respecting the jurisdictions of the police departments we aim to help. Being able to see and manipulate these boundaries in an easy way is huge for us as no one on our team is exactly a GIS expert.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you need a way to easily visualize and manipulate geospatial data without industry expert knowledge of GIS systems and software, Carto would be an excellent option to explore. With some SQL query knowledge, the platform should be able to do everything to fit your needs.

Carto is a very powerful platform that can scale to virtually any data size.

What do you like best about the product?
The flexibility of the APIs. We are able to make our map products as custom as we need them for our users. Our datasets vary in size and shape and being able to customize the way our users interact with our data makes more things possible. The people at Carto are great to work with and they are always there to help us with a problem or give us insight into making our tools better.
What do you dislike about the product?
The frequency of change, especially with what is considered to be trendy and new. We are always excited about what is considered cutting edge and we have learned to explore new Carto tools or products with a slowed down adoption to ensure they will work the way we expect.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are displaying large datasets in maps that perform better than anything else. We are tailoring our tools to fit our users needs in a way that is repeatable and simple. We are creating visualizations that would be difficult on other platforms. We have realized the benefit that that backend allows us to do, and we use that to make our maps and data perform as best as possible.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Get a trial and start with Builder to see how much faster Carto is compared to other platforms. Look at the API tutorials for your use cases and try out the javascript libraries to suit your needs. You will most likely find an example that is 80% of your objective.

Great data visualization software

What do you like best about the product?
Within Builder, I like how Carto makes it easy to query data with its PostgreSQL backend, and it's very easy to visualize and style the results, making it very easy to create nice looking maps. I also use the SQL and Maps APIs and JavaScript libraries, which I find to work well and intuitively, with good documentation. The feature to create a unique API key that grants access to different datasets is very useful to me.
What do you dislike about the product?
I find that the query limits are somewhat prohibitive. Particularly for larger datasets, I've run into issues not being able to vacuum a table that is too large. For some larger polygon datasets, I am not able to use jenks classification without a timeout. While I can get around some query limits by batch processing, but still can take more time than needed. Additionally, I find the pricing jump from a non-commercial to commercial license to be very steep, and it has been hard to get a real estimate for this in pricing discussions that I've had.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
My company uses Carto to host, maintain, and visualize our geospatial telecommunications and other infrastructure databases. Carto's features have streamlined our processes to develop and maintain these database. We combine this data with demand indicators such as population density, night light imagery, schools, hospitals, and other points of interest to assess where infrastructure is needed most, or where a business opportunity may be latent for our clients. Carto makes it easy to store, manage, and visualize this data to reveal patterns and insights.

GREAT product for beginners & experts, confusing business model

What do you like best about the product?
CARTO will forever hold a special place in my heart as the product & platform that introduced me to geospatial analysis. Not only is CARTO a powerful tool for geospatial developers with technical skills, but it also works tremendously for beginners with zero experience who want to generate powerful, spatial insights
What do you dislike about the product?
CARTO's business strategy doesn't seem to match their product strategy. In terms of their product strategy, CARTO seems to be investing the majority of their development efforts into features that make the product work for beginners (people without technical mapping/geospatial skills). However, while their product team continues to make the platform better and better for beginners, their pricing strategy seems to do the opposite. They've removed any pricing tier that could be remotely affordable to an individual, and have left only those pricing tiers that enterprises can afford.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use CARTO to generate ad hoc maps & spatial analyses that support various customer needs

What do you like best about the product?
The simplicity of editing your map, how easy it is to change colour, style, basemap, etc.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not being able to edit the basemaps, for example the position of the labels, roads, etc.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm currently using Carto for my academic studies, visualising data for my Data Analytics programme. The benifts of using Carto are the maps created are very professional.

Incredible geospatial tool with an easy to use web interface!

  • November 12, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
CARTO is an easy to use powerful tool, that helps us create maps in a matter of minutes without any custom code, it's all declarative. It has advanced analytical capabilities to help you facilitate different analysis within maps. You can also use SQL for more complex calculations. You can also easily share your maps with other internal/external users in a matter of seconds. Their account executive and technical support teams are incredibly agile and extremely resourceful and accommodating. We will be using it's advanced API geocoding features in the future beyond our current use cases.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is a bit of learning curve involved; however, this is typically the case with many different applications. If I could change one thing, it would be it's maximum layer limit per dataset.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use CARTO to plot our data on different maps for planning, forecasting, and collaborating with other stakeholders.
