Versatile and Affordable for Small Teams

  • April 20, 2026
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that Coder is self-hostable and open-source, which is important for our small bootstrapped team. I also find the 'Workspace as Code' feature really useful because it makes it easy to share with my team and have reproducible workspaces. Plus, it works with any IDE, which is great. It was also easy to get started with existing templates, and the integration with agent CLI tools like Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode works well without any issues.
What do you dislike about the product?
The premium plan is not affordable for a small team like us with per seat pricing and annual plans. I would like to see some middle plans for small teams which are more affordable.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Coder to create sandboxed development environments, which lets us work with agents and share a consistent setup across our small team, enhancing our development workflow.

What do you dislike about the product?
Might be helpful if you provide the explanation.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Coder for writing front end applications in React. It provides helpful steps and code, improving my coding efficiency and aiding my learning process.

Effortless Provisioning with IDE Flexibility

  • April 20, 2026
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like Coder because of its fast workspace provisioning, which significantly reduces the time and effort required to get started on development tasks. I also appreciate the IDE flexibility; it adds value by allowing developers to continue using familiar tools like VS Code.
What do you dislike about the product?
Setup and ongoing management can be complex, especially when troubleshooting issues across infrastructure and workspace layers. It can be improved with clearer onboarding guidance, better default configurations, and stronger built-in diagnostics. Improved documentation with more opinionated templates and better visibility into workspaces would also help.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Coder to provision and manage cloud development environments, which solves inconsistent development environments and reduces onboarding times. It quickly spins up workspaces, saving time and effort, while allowing devs to use familiar tools like VS Code.

Ready to go Experiment Setup and a Helpful Free Tier for Small Teams

  • April 20, 2026
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Coder platform offers a free tier, which was really helpful for small teams getting started. The setup is also pretty quick and convenient, making it easy to begin using right away.
What do you dislike about the product?
Navigation between different spaces wasn’t very user-friendly. Debugging within the coding environment could be improved to provide a smoother overall experience. I also felt that AI Assistant integrations to help with setup and optimization were missing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Useful for testing environments for a monolithic application that can take a few hours for someone to set up. Coder is handy as a ready-to-run container, which helps avoid setup costs during onboarding and reduces the classic "worked for me, not for you" issues caused by differences in machines, versions, and other local configurations.
Performance of coder was quick and better for integrations.

Effortless Android Development with Coder

  • April 20, 2026
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I use Coder as a plugin for VSCode IDE to develop my Android app. It provides me with all kinds of convenience and support, enabling me to create a 100% successful Android app even with zero knowledge and experience. Coder also assists with HTML, PHP, Python, and Bash (Linux) coding when needed. I find the GPT5 model perfect and appreciate that it often handles complex functions successfully. The initial setup of Coder was very easy for me.
What do you dislike about the product?
It often handles complex functions successfully, but sometimes it automatically switches to a lower model and becomes unable to solve simple problems.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Coder enables me to create a successful Android app despite having zero knowledge and experience, and assists with coding in HTML, PHP, Python, and Bash when needed.

Effortless Cloud Workspaces with Consistent Setup

  • April 20, 2026
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I really enjoy how quickly I can spin up consistent powerful workspaces with VS Code using Coder. This feature completely fixes the 'it works on my machine' issue and saves a lot of setup time. I also appreciate the superfast onboarding process, making it easy for new members to get started and saving a huge amount of time. The consistent experience for the whole team is another highlight; changes like updating a library tool are made once in the template and applied to everyone. The better productivity with fewer interruptions because developers get powerful cloud resources instantly is very beneficial, as it eliminates waiting for slow local builds or laptop performance problems. The setup process was really easy for me.
What do you dislike about the product?
Managing and organizing many workspaces across different teams is messy. Better built-in folder structures would make it much easier. Documentation for advanced features could be clearer and have more practical examples, especially for more complex setups like custom AI governance or advanced RBAC.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Coder to resolve the 'it works on my machine' issue and improve team consistency. It offers faster onboarding, better security, and access to a powerful cloud environment, increasing productivity and reducing interruptions by eliminating slow laptop and local build issues.

I use Coder for my coursework and personal projects and it saves me time setting up the development environment for different projects and managing dependencies. I find it easy to get started with Coder, and it allows me to switch between projects without worrying about breaking anything, which keeps everything organized. Overall, the initial setup of Coder was fairly easy, just needed a bit of time.
What do you dislike about the product?
There's a small learning curve at the beginning with Coder. It would be helpful to have more beginner-friendly or quick start guides.

Effortless Environment Setup, Needs Faster Startup

  • April 20, 2026
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like how Coder lets me access my development environment from anywhere without the need to worry about local setup, saving me time and maintaining a consistent workflow, especially when switching between devices. It helps me stay productive even when I'm not using my main laptop since I can log in from any machine and pick up exactly where I left off without reinstalling tools or copying files. It also makes collaboration easier because everyone can use the same standardized setup.
What do you dislike about the product?
One thing that could be improved is the workspace start up and reconnect time, which can sometimes feel slower than expected, especially when dealing with large environments. Also, the error logs troubleshooting guidance could be clearer so that it's easier to quickly understand what went wrong and fix issues without spending too much time.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Coder to create consistent development environments without local setup, making it easy to jump into coding from anywhere. It saves time, helps manage code efficiently, and ensures setup consistency across the team.

Consistent, Low-Load Developer Workflow with Better Control

  • April 20, 2026
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Consistency, better control, and a smoother developer workflow—without adding a heavy cognitive load.
What do you dislike about the product?
The main limitation is around the ecosystem and integrations. Compared to something like GitHub Codespaces, which is deeply integrated into GitHub workflows, Coder can feel more “build-it-yourself” when it comes to CI/CD tie-ins, policies, and automation, so you may need to invest extra effort to get everything wired up the way you want.

On the cost side, even though you avoid per-minute compute charges from managed platforms, you’re still paying for the underlying infrastructure. Without solid controls in place, idle workspaces can quietly drive up cloud costs over time.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Standardization at scale makes it easier to support multiple teams and environments. It also reduces operational friction for developers, which means fewer tickets related to setup and configuration issues. When it’s managed well, it can improve cost and resource control too, since you’re centralizing compute instead of dealing with scattered local inefficiencies. Security and compliance alignment are stronger as well, because code isn’t sitting on unmanaged endpoints.

The trade-off is that you’re taking on platform ownership. In return, though, you get consistency, more control, and a noticeably smoother developer experience.
