DB2 Review

  • April 16, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
DB2 is a very performant database system. I've used it on mainframes mostly which has it's own set of idiosyncrasies compared to a normal server version. It stores data quickly and uses a very standard set of SQL unlike Oracle who has tried to get everyone on their version SQL forever.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's old, which in a lot of cases makes it preferred, especially in DB's, you want all of the bugs worked out. In this case though, it's behind the times on a lot of newer features. It's only for enterprise customers, there is no way to work it into a small budget company's app. There is no auto sequence for id's, you have to query some sequence table and put it in the id column, you could use a trigger I guess but it could easily be done for you like oracle or others.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Used to store data on a mainframe for a bunch of internal app. Very big metal operation.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Build a set of utilities in your app to handle commonly used tasks, it will speed up further development.

What do you dislike about the product?
It would be nice to have it enabled with multiple web tools to make it easier to manage.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It provides for configuring storage while improving efficiency and performance
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Its simple, easy to use and powerful database management software package that has all the required tools right out of the box.

Great product with fast performance and reliability

  • April 22, 2015
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have been using for for almost 20 years. Started on the mainframe then moved to UNIX. I really like Performance and Stability of this product.
We used to had very serious power issue and a lot of boxes crashed, a couple Oracle server could not come up and there was no issue with db2 crash recovery.
What do you dislike about the product?
I would like db2 on Unix to include something like cold start option and include a native utility to analyze log files.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use db2 for OLTP for most tier 1 system. We also use it for data warehouse application.
