AWS re:Invent 2019 – Jeff Dowds of Vanguard Talks About the Journey to the AWS Cloud

2019

The Vanguard Group is an investment management company with over 30 million investors and $5.7 trillion in assets. It is a digital firm committed to giving customers “the best chance of investment success.” Six years ago, the company, which operated over 2000 servers, decided to move to the cloud to accelerate innovation and transform IT.

After attending re:Invent 2015, Vanguard chose AWS to help it modernize its traditional, heavily virtualized tech stack, big data platforms, monolithic applications (some running as many as 50 million lines of code), and aPaaS running microservices. The company took a “security first” approach, putting in place over 150 security controls, as it migrated to AWS services, such as Amazon S3, Amazon EMR, AWS Direct Connect, Amazon Aurora, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon ECS on AWS Fargate.

It also began using AWS machine learning services, such as Amazon Comprehend and Amazon SageMaker, and AWS security capabilities. As a result, Vanguard now has a 100 percent cloud native architecture and can reduce the cost of computing by 30 percent and deploy workloads up to 20 times faster, as well as improve resiliency and innovate quickly.
