AWS IAM Launches Preview of SMS MFA for IAM Users

Posted on: Nov 17, 2015

Today, AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) launched the preview of the Short Message Service (SMS) multi-factor authentication (MFA) option for verifying IAM users when signing in to the AWS Management Console. MFA is a security best practice that adds an extra layer of protection in addition to users’ passwords. Until now, you could enable MFA for IAM users only with hardware or virtual MFA tokens, but this new feature enables you to use the text messaging functionality of a mobile phone to verify IAM users with MFA. After enabling SMS MFA, users are prompted for their password, as well as for an MFA security code that can only be received on their mobile phone via SMS. To sign up for the preview, register on the AWS MFA page.
