Amazon EBS reduces the minimum volume size of Throughput Optimized HDD and Cold HDD Volumes by 75%

Posted on: Dec 11, 2020

December 11th, 2020 – You can now create Throughput Optimized HDD (ST1) and Cold HDD Volumes (SC1) as small as 125GB, allowing you to save up to 75% over the previous 500GB minimum when creating volumes at this new minimum size.

Throughput Optimized HDD (st1) is a low cost HDD volume type designed for higher throughput applications requiring up to 500 MB/s throughput, while Cold HDD (sc1) is an even lower cost HDD volume type designed for large, less frequently accessed, high-throughput data workloads requiring up to 250 MB/s throughput.

Reduced minimum volume sizes for both of these volumes are available in all EBS regions. Customers can get started with sc1 and st1 volumes using the AWS Management Console, the AWS CLI, or the AWS SDKs.

Customers can either create new sc1 or st1 volumes or use Elastic Volume functionality to seamlessly upgrade their existing EBS volumes larger than 125GB to st1 and sc1 volumes without disrupting their applications. For more information on st1 and sc1 volumes, please visit our product page.
