Easy for the beginners and full feature for the professionals

  • June 01, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Low requirement on on the hardware. You can run it on just about anything.
What do you dislike about the product?
pfSense CE is a bit outdated on the new hardware, pfSense plus lacks a direct installation image. Install the CE version then upgrade to the Plus version is a bit painful.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
What problem solved, not just one! The cost compared to Cisco was peanuts. The ability to install OpenVPN was a God send for the remote users. Stable is another primary reason.

Customizable Firewall and Router with Great Performance

  • June 01, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It is a highly customizable firewall and router that will fit most of our clients' use cases. BGP IP announcement along with L3 firewall and basic routing with no vendor lock-in. We can buy direct from Netgate or put on a VM and deploy in minutes.
What do you dislike about the product?
No REST API Support in 2023 is making us slow down our installation of new pfSense deployments. The fractured features between pfSense+ and pfSense CE are a concern as we cannot review and audit source code for our stricter clients regarding upgrading and change notes between versions.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Core Router and Firewall for our business customers (at their office/core and edge locations). pfSense also allows us to to setup site-to-site setup via IPsec in spoke and hub for unified networking and routing between all locations.

What do you like best about the product?
Pfsense plus is worth the cost. Most options come with all security rules and protocols to expand upon including vlans segmentation and as well DHCP server.
What do you dislike about the product?
Can't think of any issues relating to the configuration and utilization of router control. Load balancing maybe, if it's a compatibility issue but everything with pfsense is sound with me.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Their solving cost productivity and options for thr general public

pfSense is the ONLY way to do firewalls

  • May 30, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Granular control over anything and everything firewall-related, including routing. Additionally, pfSense (Netgate) support is beyond stellar. They set the gold standard for product knowledge and support. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
What do you dislike about the product?
I had to do a little paradigm adjusting as I was used to doing things in different ways; however, any time you change vendors, this is going to occur. Netgate support was stellar and made the transition as painless as possible.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Site-to-Site VPN, access control, firewall rules, employee VPN, etc.

Enterprise level firewall at a fraction of the price

  • May 30, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
After conducting an in-depth analysis of various enterprise-level solutions, we discovered that many of them not only incurred a substantial initial acquisition cost but also imposed functional restrictions while subjecting users to additional charges based on their service usage. An illustrative instance is the requirement for multiple IPsec tunnels, which necessitates an extra fee per so many tunnels. Similarly, if one desires two WAN connections, an additional fee applies. In stark contrast, PfSense emerges as an all-encompassing solution, unencumbered by limitations. Our transition from Juniper and SonicWall, dating back 5 to 6 years, led us to replace every firewall in our infrastructure with Netgate hardware running PfSense.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is difficult for me to identify any significant shortcomings of PfSense. However, if I were to pinpoint one aspect, I would mention that the web interface, although entirely functional and intuitive, exhibits a slightly dated design. Additionally, the inclusion of pre-defined permission groups tailored for lower-level users and managers could prove beneficial. Nonetheless, it is worth noting that these features can be implemented without difficulty, as the user rights offer a high level of granularity, necessitating only the creation of custom groups.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
PfSense delivers an exceptional firewall solution that strikes a balance between user-friendliness for those with limited expertise and the capability to handle intricate tasks for experienced users. Its seamless functionality enables effortless connectivity across remote locations and facilitates the secure integration of roaming users, all while upholding stringent security policies.

What do you like best about the product?
Easy to use and find knowledge based articles to guide the user
What do you dislike about the product?
Firmware upgrades can potentially corrupt the file system if user is not careful
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
pfsense is keeping my online presence safe and secure

I have been using pfSense for years as a low cost firewall to protect my business and home networks.

  • May 27, 2023
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
pfSense is easy to configure with it's setup wizard. Now with tailscale implemented in pfSense plus software configuration of a lightweight VPN based on Wireguard is simple. pfBlocker also allows you to stop ads at the firewall! All of this is great for a novice network administrator.
What do you dislike about the product?
Occasionally upgrading the software version corrupts the configuration which may require a reinstall and repeat setup. Upgrades require time to test and troubleshoot and one always needs to back up complicated configurations.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Tailscale implementation on pfSense is a game changer for setting up a Wireguard-based VPN. I can easily see behind four pfSense firewalls at different locations making network and computer management much quicker. Creating a private file server (private cloud) behind pfSense enhances security and privacy.

All the features you need for a network gateway

  • May 14, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that it can run in a VM as well as on dedicated hardware. It's easy to install and you get a GUI to configure everything. The user interface is fairly intuitive and the feature set is very rich.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes the extra software modules are not quite up to quality standards of the main software. They tend to be a big buggy at times. Although the frr module works okay, I wish it was a bit more mature.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It works well for remote access and a point-to-point VPN. The OpenVPN implementation is very good and stable. Overall I've had very few support calls when using pfSense as a firewall and gateway.

We're using pfsense in AWS for ~80 IPsec tunnels. Works well. Upgrades have been easy and the support team at pfsense have been supportive when we've had questions.
