The most stable linux distro

  • August 18, 2020
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It works and it won't break unless you break it, I have a Debian 4 machine running in a very old laptop that I use for tests and it still works relatively well without needing to upgrade and I never plan to upgrade it until the hardware fails with age but at the same time I have some machines running Debian 9 and 10 and they work like a charm either in physical or virtual hardware.

As far as I'm aware Debian is the most stable distro in the Linux World
What do you dislike about the product?
That stability comes as expected with a tradeoff and that is that sometimes the newest and fanciest toys are not available until around 6 months or even 2 years later unless you install them from an external repository.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
For starters, my main home PC is a Debian Desktop with Raid 1 for all my important data, even if or when it fails all my important data is protected. I also use it a lot on Virtual Deployments and I always have a live usb with me in case any machine fails in any form
Recommendations to others considering the product:
For stability there is just no better OS, unless you need a new hot feature in a rolling distro it's the best linux out there

Operating System for Humans

What do you like best about the product?
The best feature Debian has (in addition to its amazing package manager) is its community. All Debian developers are volunteers that manage to keep a great repository of free software applications that come together to form an amazing experience. And its users support each other in making an awesome ecosystem to be in for whatever needs you have. That is only one of the reasons why several other distributions are based off of it.
What do you dislike about the product?
In order to take full advantage of your OS you need to understand several idiosyncrasies that stem from the way Debian does some things. And when you are trying to get your head around a new OS, those things are not something you want to spend your time on... even if they would save you time on the long-term.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Debian has been running on all machines I use and administer for years now. They are great for severs (if you use the latest stable release) an widely accepted in the software world as one of the major players. It would be difficult to find something that does not explain how to run on Debian (or something like Docker... that you can run on Debian very easily)
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are tired of package dependency hell, Debian - with its apt package manager - is the solution you have been looking for. And if you are scared of Debian, then you may want to try a derivative distribution like Ubuntu (or one of its derivatives) and as you try to simplify that setup move back to Debian afterwards.

Amazing all purpose operating system

  • July 04, 2019
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It runs very well and with little resource usage in all hardware and inside a VM. Amazing operating system for running all kind of scripts and simulating all kind of scenarios.
What do you dislike about the product?
Many think that using Debian is hard, that's not true anymore, it is as easy to use as Windows or MacOSX.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I run it inside a VM to run linux programs in my macbook and in many servers to do bug simulation and troubleshooting.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's easy to use, we are not in 199x when using linux was hard, it's as easy to use as Windows or MacOSX

Debian

  • June 12, 2019
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
What I like about Debian is the security that my files do not get infected with viruses, or that the operating system is damaged, when it closes without running the process of closing the system. With the Windows 7 operating system, the machine became infected with viruses even if it had an antivirus installed, due to the speed with which it creates viruses. In Debian there is no virus and, although it can read a Pendrive file with a virus file, the operating system is not infected and its files are safe. Debian is very stable and even if the operating system is suddenly interrupted, when the machine is turned on, the system starts without any problem, without any type of system recovery.
What do you dislike about the product?
What I do not like about Debian is its graphical interface compared to Windows or Mac, it is very rudimentary, not interesting for users who use the system to work with desktop packages and who call them interest in the graphics of games or programs. design. Other things that limit the use of debian is that although my functions are related to the technical service and the programming area, install a package, sometimes it is inconvenient for the issue of dependencies. In some cases, the installation of a program requires a lot of time and, sometimes, the software is not installed due to the dependencies that must be installed to execute the desired program.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The main benefit is the reduction of work motivated by the decrease in user requirements for the cause of computer viruses and the loss of information that causes the contamination of a data file. The percentage of formatting of the operating system and the reinstallation of software caused by the operating system damage due to failures of system shutdown or registry system defect that damage the Windows operating system also decreased. Another benefit is the increased speed of software processing compatible with debia, since the operating system does not consume as much RAM as other proprietary operating systems. They increased their processing capacity by running the different packages that are compatible with Debian.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I would recommend debian for those institutions that have computers with few processor resources and RAM, due to their ability to be faster when processing information with debian compatible packages, also for those companies that have many problems with the virus problem. I would also recommend it for its stability and excellent performance, with the presence of very few faults.

Total flexibility in OS deployments & configurations, no strings atqtached

  • July 30, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Users & organisations have total flexibility from source code up; only obligations are those inherent in free software licenses, usually applicable only if redistributing software outside of the organisation.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is nothing to dislike in Debian itself; only points of attention are attrition in interoperability with proprietary software, typically those by Microsoft (nonstandard MS Windows network configuration, for instance), Adobe, Oracle & Autodesk (proprietary file formats).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Several users needed a more secure & flexible OS for technical tasks such as Web or Java development, network management, security administration, servers &c.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Do not migrate wholesale, but start with servers & technical users. Pay special attention to interoperability needs if you depend of proprietary software.

Debian is my server OS

  • July 13, 2018
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Debian is stable, with a great community, you can find 'how to' for whatever you want, it is perfect as a server operating system.
It is an old distribution with many users and contributors around the world, and it is used as base for big desktop (and server) distribution like ubuntu.
You can easily follow the upgrade of the system without needed to install again the whole system.
You can also find experts to help you if you need training or services.
And it's free !
What do you dislike about the product?
If I need to dislike something, sometimes for the stability purpose some software are kept back to an old version and we need additional repositories to enjoy new features.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Every time I need to host a service I use debian as my OS, websites, services like xmpp, or email server.
It's free, when you have learn to use it, it costs you nothing more, it's a huge business quality.
You can spend more money on human resources instead off paying big prize for licenses when you can have one of the best product for free.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you need a really good, stable and followed operating system you can go with debian blinded, it is not the most simple as desktop OS, ubuntu, based on debian is great and you are with a derivative, so debian is still here.
You can easily work under debian in a virtual machine if you work as a developer and automate a lot of thing with ansible (and vagrant for the development environment setup).
You can deploy debian in almost all cloud platform and the mentality is conservative enough to assure you the stability you need for a business.
