Brightspace: LMS with relevant features for higher education

  • July 11, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The platform is mostly user-friendly, which makes it generally easy and simple for most instructors and students to use and interact with. The fact that the company (D2L) offers clear, accessible, and free templates (Daylight) helps simplify course organization, ensures the content is accessbile, and encourages consistency throughout the course. An added bonus is that users do not need to know how to code (HTML) to use the templates, they can use them as-is and copy-paste extra elements (provided in the templates), when needed.

Also, users can choose from a variety of languages for the display (the user (instructor/student) provided content is presented in the language in which it was written). This is definitely important for institutions that offer courses in more than one language or whose students come from diverse cultural/linguistic backgrounds, as it enhances accessibility.

Finally, it is possible to integrate many third-party apps. This enhances the utility and functions of Brightspace and helps simplify and streamline some of the activities instructors may want to use in their classes.
What do you dislike about the product?
Although D2L is working on improving the consistency and accuracy of the terms and labels it uses throughout Brightspace, these are not always consistent or correct and causes confusion and frustration at times.

In addition, some of the embedded tools and functionalities have a steep learning curve as they can be rather complex and difficult to master. This has caused frustration for some instructors leading some to not use Brightspace tools to their full potential.

An ongoing issue for me has been the difficulty and time required to grade discussion forum posts when students post anonymously. These posts need to be graded manually, which can be overwhelming when teaching a large class, for example. Although I believe the option to post anonymously is important, not just for accessbility reasons but also to encourage students to communicate openly and honnestly, especially when the topic is personal or controversial.

A last challenge with Brightspace for me is with the integrated grading tool. It can be clunky and difficult to use and issues often arise. For example, it is difficult and frustrating to annotate/comment/grade using the handwriting (or drawing) tool. Extra lines are often added and the annotations are not always saved.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Problem 1: simplifying and streamlining learning and assessment activities. Being able to integrate numerous third-party apps not only can simplify the instructor's job, but can also enhance collaboration in the classroom (or online). It encourages innovative teaching methods and makes the learner's learning experience richer.

For institutions that offer courses and programs in more than one language or who cater to students from diverse cultural backgrounds, the ability for each user to choose their preferred interface language helps ensure it is accessible and inclusive for all. In addition, tools like the home page, customizable widgets, checklists, and announcements help to streamline and improve communication with learners by helping guide them through course requirements, deadlines, and activities.

One of my favourite benefits is the free, accessible, and easy to use templates offered by D2L for Brightspace. These templates help encourage consistency within and across courses. This can enhance the learner experience by reducing confusion and cognitive load and thus improving engagement and supporting learners to be successful.

Easy to administer, easy to teach, easy to learn!

What do you like best about the product?
Ive used Brightspace for 10 years as an Administrator. I have also used it as an Instructor, and as a Student. In all roles I have found the tool to be intuitive, engaging, easy to use, and esthetically pleasing. There are a number of our of the box tools and features to meet my needs, and great support teams to work with if or when custom solutions may be needed as well. We have worked with the Learning Creative Services team on many projects and have always been excedingly happy with the process, level of customer service, and projecyt outputs.
What do you dislike about the product?
We have encountered very few challenges that could not be resolved with the appropriate supports. I do wish there was more accurate tracking of content consumption (marked as completed as soon as a learner touches a lesson, not once they complete it or engage with its content)
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
D2L has allowed us to ensure a consistent and positive onboarding experience to all new staff. It now serves as the one stop shop for learning at our organization and staff know it is where to go to find answers they are looking for. It also facilitates the delivery of all our external facing learning programs to audiences around the world, securely and reliably.

No desire to look for anything else

What do you like best about the product?
Everything is intuitive and works. And, since they are constantly improving, clicks are being reduced and recent incorporation of AI means we are on top of current and necessary trends.
What do you dislike about the product?
The outgoing version of content management was click heavy, but you get a lot of control as a result. The older interface is also a little dated, but a new version is rolling out that I am excited to see.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
They are staying in touch with trends and listening to their users. You can't ask for more.

D2L is Our Preferred Platform

  • July 09, 2024
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We began to use D2L's Creator+ platform in July 2023. It was an essential solution as we hosted more video and learning practices within our platform. I highly recommend it as a solution to creating more student engagement.
What do you dislike about the product?
A strength can turn into a weakness if there are too many ways to accomplish the same task. Because the platform has so many ways to accomplish a design task it can be confusing. We have attempted to problem solve by using common workflows.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
D2L is at the forefront of innovation in the LMS industry. I love the focus on AI integration.

What do you like best about the product?
Personally, I find D2L to be at the forefront of Design Aesthetics with their navigation interface as it creates an easy to use structure for students. The LMS provides a ton of potential with regard to Course Variety. The simple and reliable User Interface design helds first year students navigator. However, above all I believe that the technical support is unmatched. Our D2L representatives are receptive, friendly and fast to action in responding to our concerns.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Students are connected in an LMS for all courses whether they are multimodal, online, hybrid or traditional on ground. D2L offers a place where all students go to find their course work.
