My experience in Brightspace after changing jobs

  • February 22, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It is a well-structured learning environment, with all the essential elements of an in-person class but with suitable integrations for hybrid or distance teaching. It promotes fundamental aspects of current teaching, such as: active methodologies, teamwork and collaboration; constant communication between users and through various means. As well as, new trends in evaluation.
What do you dislike about the product?
The guide is very helpful, however, there are so many configurations that I would like to have a video or a videoconference assistant (in Spanish) to support me in implementing the elements it offers. To cite a mere example, Teams or Office 365, especially when it shows an error.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In a short time, I have realized that the implementation of Brightspace in my workplace allows for the management of all the courses offered at PrepaIbero (Mexico). I support teachers in solving their technical and pedagogical questions related to Brightspace. We are working with D2L Brightspace for the integration of our school control system with the Brightspace platform through an API, which will reduce the administrative burden and allow us to focus our attention on the full adoption of the LMS with the teachers.

An excellent user-friendly platform

  • February 22, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
D2L Brightspace is easy to use with a quick learning curve. The D2L accompaniment is very close. While the LMS is adequate for most of the teachers' content. Currently there is a wide variety of LMS, however Brightspace stands out for its intuitive interface for both teachers and students.
What do you dislike about the product?
Compared to other LMS, Brightspace falls short in some respects, especially code manipulation, as it is a closed source platform. However, it meets most needs. Although the resources and activities are complete, the forum section (exchange activities between students) does not have all the options available in other LMS.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
D2L Brightspace offers an out-of-the-box solution for delivering synchronous and asynchronous content for distance education. It´s quickly implemented in an almost closed package. Another important virtue is the rapid adoption by teachers, thanks to its fast learning curve.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I recommend having a complete trial period of the platform first to know if it meets and correctly meets all expectations; each LMS aims to meet different needs of institutions. The process of implementing a new LMS is not easy in general. At once, implemented all users must learn to use it, and then the students. That is why the target audience (teachers and students, for example) must try the product.

How to improve D2L

  • February 22, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The interface, this platform is way more friendly with teachers and students. We can use the diferent sections and add specific activities and information to each one of them, and check if the students review it or not.
Also, the visual part is very appealing, and we can personalize it! We can use different materials and also pictures to highlight important parts of the course contents. From the perspective of the activities we can set up differents restrictions to allow for differents courses work in the activity in different time frames.
Finally, I like the possibility of follow the students progress in the diferent activities and have statistics for them, which can be filtrated by classes.
What do you dislike about the product?
My main problem with the platform is the grading book. In particular, I would like to have an average for some grade items and be able to drop some of them. For instance, in Moodle we were able to have the average for six homework assignments and drop the lower grade for them, so we calculated the average for the remaining 5. Right now, we can not do that in D2L.
Also, my University uses SMOWL as a proctoring system, and we have also an issue about the access to the activities subject to proctoring. This emerge from the fact that students can access to the activity in severay ways, but the proctoring program only get activated following one of them.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use it for education as the primary platform for course materials, graded activities, and communication with the students. We take and proctor the exams from the platform, and the main benefit is the ability to produce random exams using the question library built in the platform. Also, we manage a master course platform that the teachers copy as a mainframe for the semester, but each of them can make the changes required.
For example, I can add resources to the platforms and change them using the available tools.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
As a professor, talk with your IT management to upload your old virtual classroom into the new one. So you don´t need to start from scratch.

The study platform is intuitive for use as a student, manager, or administrator.

What do you like best about the product?
The ease of course creation and the modularization of its components to implement them within the units.
What do you dislike about the product?
The organizational structure is a bit cumbersome to implement, it requires very detailed prior analysis and planning.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Implement an intuitive navigation and user experience (UX) for the students.

Transforming education

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Brightspace arrived at the university during the pandemic; it supports and contributes to a continuous educational model without losing contact with those who matter to us. It is an excellent IT enabler.
What do you dislike about the product?
An opportunity for improvement could be the enhancement in the grading of rubrics and data generation for teachers (not administrators). Please, less operation!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Technical support of any kind (and ticket escalation), generate information with data based on datahub for teachers, all in exchange for service and knowledge!
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Know in depth the company's roadmap.

What do you like best about the product?
As a multimedia designer, Brightspace has been helpful when integrating content is a very noble app.
What do you dislike about the product?
I would like to have the exact HTML to add the images or the PDF directly in the HTML code.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I don't have problems because I am not the person that administers the platform.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is a great LMS; we have some problems migrating from other LMS, but when we had all our courses on the platform, it was good.

    Higher Education

Brightspace for Higher Education

  • February 22, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Administration for D2L is easy and feature complete. There are many administrative tools built into Brightspace that make bulk editing, supporting, and scaling a large institution a straightforward process.
What do you dislike about the product?
The design of some tools is not user-friendly. Tools are built on top of tools, and the interface is not always the same for similar tasks. New features are released with a specific market in mind and it feels as though higher education is left behind for new features and that D2L is focused more on K-12 (good if you're in K-12 I suppose). New features are often released without thorough testing, many bugs, and strange design choices.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our entire institution uses Brightspace and has for about 10 years effectively. It has helped us navigate online learning through the pandemic and will continue. It has performed a key role in providing our students with flexible learning opportunities and helps support students with different learning needs. Students have found Brightspace to be easy to use, and having all of their course material online keeps them on track. Instructors can work together on course material and can harmonize course content and assessments across course sections.
