cbryan d2l review

  • February 22, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Canadian-based company, ability to use HTML templates to style content, lots of options for assessments including quiz, rubrics, dropbox, and discussions. In the top 2 LMSs available in my opinion.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is a trend for the company to abandon older elements or extensions of the lms (eportfolio, course catalog) in favor of incomplete new developments. Some updates seem to favor aesthetics over functionality. Currently focusing on expanding into the k-12 demographic and somewhat leaving higher ed feeling ignored.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
D2L Brightspace allows us to offer flexible delivery of content. Improving both face-to-face, blended and online delivery. It's an essential tool for modern course delivery.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Connect with other institutions that actively use the platform. Become a part of the Brightspace community as well.

What do you like best about the product?
It is a powerful, full-featured LMS. The tools integrate nicely throughout the platform and it allows a lot of customization at both an organization and instructor level.
What do you dislike about the product?
There can be a lot of clicking with some tools, and not all features are easy to find.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It allows teachers to continue instruction in both F2F and at-home learning situations. It provides flexibility and an opportunity for review and extension for students.

D2L FTW

What do you like best about the product?
D2L Brightspace is a straightforward and easy-to-use LMS for developing engaging and functional courses. I enjoy using the HTML editor to curate content.
What do you dislike about the product?
Emailing a classlist via the email tool is not always the most reliable experience. The latest Dropbox/Assignments layout has me fumbling a bit.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Chunking content into more easily digestible portions for better rentention. Utilizing both D2L tools and a variety of integrations help achieve more engagement.

Good user experience but with a few extra steps

What do you like best about the product?
It is easy to get started in the D2L Brightspace platform. There are tools for just about everything you need such as quizzes, discussion boards, dropboxes. I like that you can connect everything and have it linked out from the content area. There is also great communication from D2L support. As administrators in higher ed, we have frequent meetings with various D2L groups that result in open communication. We get weekly emails that go over upcoming releases and important notices. It helps keep us on track when we have to deliver the content to instructors.
What do you dislike about the product?
The gradebook functions completely separately from the D2L tools. You must create items in each area and then go back to connect them. Also some of the other tools such as survey and chat haven't been updated in a while. I wish there was a better way to request updates rather than upvoting PIE items.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is allowing instructors to move their courses online. It is getting information to more students. It is fairly straightforward to upload content and create assessments, so instructors can get started quickly. Brightspace has allowed our instructors to navigate not only moving to remote learning during the pandemic but further into effective eLearning.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I think D2L is a solid choice when considering LMS choices. It is easy to use and there are many functions to achieve the course that you want. Most instructors are able to transition from other LMS without much trouble. D2L has many helpful resources on its website and the staff is always willing to help. It seems that they are frequently listening to users' requests and making updates where appropriate.

Brightspace is stable and flexible. Data integrations are clunky and it has UI inconsistencies

  • February 18, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The brightspace platform is generally stable, and feature extensibility through LTI makes it flexible for users.
What do you dislike about the product?
Data integration is opaque, inflexible, and clunky. Simple operations like moving sections between parent courses when SIS data changes occur require confusing manual intervention. IPSIS needs a complete overhaul.

The UI reflects organic growth and some features like manual course creation reflect outdated UI components/styles and are incompatible with some browsers.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have deployed Brightspace to our entire academic community and have expanded to a second independent platform for continuing studies for external users and organizations.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Pay special attention to the relationship between the business process of course scheduling in your SIS and the feeding of course information to Brightspace. You may need to manage a tracking log of user/course/role additions and deletions in order to positively add and remove those items on brightspace or build an integration through an API to satifactorily keep SIS and brightspace in sync

Creating high quality learning made simple

  • February 17, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's easy to create professional looking content using D2L templates and it's easy to link to Harvard ManageMentor and Linkedin Learning.
Learners like the "bite sized" videos, ability to revisit content and ability modify the playback speed of videos.
It's easy to create groups for discussions/ assignments.
It's easy for learners and facilitators to create and share videos.
What do you dislike about the product?
Discussion threads are our lowest-rated feature. Learners say it’s hard to be collaborative with the way discussion threads operate.
The method for setting award conditions can be a tedious process.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We can more easily connect global learners without the need for travel. Learners can have more flexibility and ownership over how and when they participate in the learning experience.

An experience of knowledge

  • February 16, 2022
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Certainly from the platform that is completely reliable, it stays available for a long time, almost never goes offline, and also from the D2L team who are true partners to their clients.
What do you dislike about the product?
As the platform contains many features, not all of them end up being used due to a lack of more people on the team, and in some cases, there are functions that present difficulties to change.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
implementation of an online learning environment, as already mentioned the best benefits are, the availability time, the D2L team, and the ease of interacting with the platform
