Decent System, Awful Support
What do you like best about the product?
Using the fundamental tools of the system is pretty easy. You can create quizzes, add content, add to the calendar and add conditions with little assistance. The grades feature is also nice because you can view all student's grades in once place without having to look around. You can also make grades conditional on the completion of various items.
What do you dislike about the product?
Brightspace has easily the worst support I've ever experienced. The sad part about it is that they used to have great tech support, that were able to solve problems in a few days and were easy to interact with. I have had multiple tickets not get solved for months, and our average time to solve a ticket, excluding the multi-month tickets, is about ten days. Often, I call into the support team; I cannot hear their tech team members because of either mic quality or terrible internet from their end. I dread having tech issues not because of the actual issue, I understand that software will always have bugs, but because I have to contact the support team. We have been with Brightspace for seven years and have seen the support continually go downhill.
We used their reporting tool weekly; one day, Brightspace took that tool away and made us pay $2,000 to upgrade to get the "new and improved" DataHub. The DataHub is not easy to use and is missing many features that the previous reporting tool had. The "training" that they provided on the DataHub was providing us with a 299 page Word document saying "read this" if you need help. As a general rule, taking something away and charging any amount of money to get that tool back is extremely unethical.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are an online college, and initially went with Brightspace to upgrade our courses for our students. We like the modern design and easy-to-use fundamentals of the system. We also loved their support, however, that has gone away.
Another LMS option
What do you like best about the product?
Some of the navigation is easier than other LMSs, some are not. I like the features that allow for easy navigation and intuitive decision-making. No LMS is perfect, D2L is better than others for certain things and worse for others.
What do you dislike about the product?
As said above, no LMS is perfect, D2L is better than others for certain things and worse for others. What would really be helpful would be for D2L to get over its identity crisis and decide whether they want to be D2L or Brightspace, and then, PLEASE, have support sites and resources match that decision.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The main problem I'm solving at the moment is to continue teaching during several waves of a pandemic that doesn't seem to want to go away and trying to replace activities that ordinarily would take place in-person, e.g., discussions, with on-line activites through D2L.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Only adopt it after they overcome their identity crisis.

What do you like best about the product?
My favorite thing about Brightspace is how many options there are. With the release conditions, groups, sections, etc., there are tons of opportunities to make things happen exactly how you want them to.
What do you dislike about the product?
So far, my biggest complaint about Brightspace is the differences between the Classic content experience and the new (Lessons) content experience. We prefer the look and feel of the Lessons experience, but there is still functionality available with the Classic experience. I hope that they continue to add this functionality to the Lessons experience.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
With Brightspace, we are solving the problem of offering training for our customers that used to be in-person only. Transitioning these training to online classes has not only given our customers more opportunities to take the training, but it has also inspired us to review our training materials and see how we can improve them.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
While other LMS systems have similar features to Brightspace, I cannot say enough wonderful things about the Brightspace community. The frequent webinars and vast training opportunities make you feel like you have a partner in learning. The Brightspace Community website itself allows you to talk to both employees of D2L as well as other customers. You never feel alone. The Support team is efficient and communicative as well.
D2L is easy to use, easy for my students to use AND offers great help and webinars.
What do you like best about the product?
That HTML Templates can easily be added to my courses to make nthem look interesting, and something students want to work in. The tricks and tools from today's Discussions are something I am going to explore this semester.
What do you dislike about the product?
When something doesn't work (because it is something I set or did) it is difficult to figure out the situation. It took me about 4 semesters to get the "Show current student grade" to implement. LOL
My main dislike is the differences in start and end dates versus due dates. I want students to see the assignment, quiz, etc after an end date to study for exams but do not want them to submit any work because they then think their work will be graded. An end date doesn't allow them to see the assignment or quiz. The due date allows them to see the assignment or quiz and still submit it.

My courses before were pretty plain Jane. This year I have been really getting into HTML templates, badges, etc.

Admin Review
What do you like best about the product?
It's great to have the community available to reach out to at any time. I use many tools regularly, I'm just getting into using rewards; there's just so many options available.
What do you dislike about the product?
Many programs require exams to be submitted in paper format for licensure. There's no easy way to print an exam from Brightspace. Or download an exam. It's also tough to create new exams with existing content.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We went from entirely in-person to fully online within a matter of 1 week. Brightspace was always available and made it much easier to make that transfer.
Brightspace
What do you like best about the product?
Everything is in one place. You can access different classrooms and content.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are a lot of links and dropdowns. It takes a while to find what you're looking to find.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Virtual learning with students, all their work is in one place.
Similar to other similar platforms
What do you like best about the product?
Similar to Canvas or Blackboard, it is an easy way to organize course information and share your setup from one semester to the next. Organizing grades is easy to setup and use.
What do you dislike about the product?
Embedding videos and setting up quizzes, etc seemed easier and more intuitive to me in other platforms.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
General day to day course organization/business
New to D2L, A+ experience!
What do you like best about the product?
I am new to D2L and after using Canvas and Blackboard, I find Brightspace to be the superior LMS in both functionality, and most importantly, support. I am not used to getting same day support but with D2L it happens more than it doesn't and that let's us move forward with projects without waiting for questions to be answered.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are some features that other LMS providers offer that Brightspace still does not but I know they are constantly working on improving their platform and adding new features very often.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are constantly improving the student experience and that is because of amazing teams in both the workplace and our dedicated support team at D2L. Our ultimate goal is for students to be successful and our partnership with D2L makes that possible.

13 years a D2L Brightspace user
What do you like best about the product?
Ease of use, innovative tools, accessibility features.
What do you dislike about the product?
Too many ways of doing the same thing. It would be easier to teach and support if there was only one way.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Remote teaching, student tracking and analytics, student wngafement with course materials.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Focus on faculty engagement, they hold the keys to successful rollout to students.
