What do you like best about the product?
I love the flexibility of the product, and especially love the feedback loop in the product development life-cycle. D2L listens to its customers and is working on constantly improving the product for the benefit of all its users! They have a Product Idea Exchange (PIE) where users can submit ideas for improvement as well as vote on other people's ideas. D2L is constantly reviewing the ideas and frequently implements a few PIE ideas with each update to the system (which occurs every month)!
What do you dislike about the product?
Like any product out there, there are always drawbacks. However, as a state school in Georgia, we're hosted remotely at the main system office. So the issues I might have maybe more due to our hosting environment and the security precautions put in place, than with the product itself. The way our set up is, we're also frequently a month behind on the newest updates, as the main office runs numerous tests, including loading the update to our sandbox environments which allows all of the institutions in the system a chance to test the newest updates and provide feedback to the group and the main office. If any major issues come up, the main office takes those issues straight to D2L who typically addresses the issues quickly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I love that I can import and export from courses. This means we can develop master templates that we can pull into courses we're developing so that we maintain our brand and have consistent look & feel through our courses. This also helps with student learning as we can reduce the cognitive load on them by making sure they always know where to find specific pieces of material, such as the syllabus, tutoring information, institution links (such as calendars), as well as institutional policies.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Do not hesitate to reach out to the D2L team! They are extremely friendly and open to hearing all of your questions and concerns. If the person you are talking to isn't sure how to answer your question right away... they WILL find out the answer for you! They are an awesome team to work with!

A great LMS with lots of potential to be even better

  • July 20, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like how versatile and customizable D2L can be. You can make the pages be almost anything you want. Faculty have an easy time learning how to building courses and students are able to find everything they need to be successful.
What do you dislike about the product?
I sometimes feel that new features are pushed out too soon to end-users without enough testing beforehand and without a super clear direction for why the new tool or layout is beneficial. Occasionally there can be some bugs that cause issues for our faculty and students, but often there is a sound reporting system to address those.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Brightspace gives us a platform to create engaging and meaningful courses for both in-person and remote learning. It is easy for faculty to learn how to build pages, and students can find the information they need quickly.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure you have a team of people at your institution that can make the most of what D2L has to offer and can train others to build excellent courses.

What's Bright about D2L's Brightspace

  • July 19, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Brightspace has so many options just in its most basic form. Native personalization and humanization options and seamless integrations of multimedia, other platforms, and SCORM elements make up the tip of the Brightspace iceberg of differentiation from its competitors. They consistently work to improve their platform and options and are not only committed to listening to client needs but are also willing to act on them to build a better product. This LMS delivers on promises.
What do you dislike about the product?
The trade-off for increased functionality is a less user-friendly build experience than something like the Canvas platform. If you want to build great learning experiences and stretch into the platform and its tools, you will need to train. While Brightspace is a heavily supported platform, this is an extra front-loaded lift.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are working to personalize our learning experiences in self-paced non-facilitated courses. Allowing Brightspace to do some of this heavy lifting leaves us free to explore creating better designs.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take the time to explore the options included in your subscription, and don't be afraid to ask your D2L rep for what you need.

What do you dislike about the product?
We don't have the full version of Core
Not a variety of evaluation programs and communication tools
More stat for the teachers easy to get and free-depend of the version of Brigthspace you buy
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
With Covid, it has completely opened the possibility to show how that technology is crucial for teaching and learning

Instructional Designer using D2L

  • July 16, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Brightspace provides an opportunity for all of our higher-ed courses (even the face to face sections) to optimize classroom time by flipping the classroom lecture style. I love the video note tool and assignment submissions.
What do you dislike about the product?
Updates are being made to create a co-hesive experience in evaluation but it has taken a long time to happen. I've also been a bit frustrated by not getting response to wanting to see a demo of the updates planned for the portfolio too.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are streamlining the evaluation and feedback process by having students submit assignments and quizzes online. The benefits have been an increase in efficiency in certain areas.

D2L Is a Agile LMS ready for your learner

  • July 15, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
D2L Brightspace listens to its customers and is constantly updating and enhancing functionality to meet the changing needs of education. D2L has started using a chat feature for tech support which is very helpful. I also really like that when they launch a new update to UI you have an option to opt out.
What do you dislike about the product?
The reporting metrics (especially around quizzes) tends to be a bit lacking. When rolling out new features, they often drop some of the essential parts of the old version.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
My organization is looking to solve the problem of student engagement and accountability. Using SCORM packages with interactive content, we can report grades back to the D2L grade book allowing students to know precisely where they stand and our faculty to know that a student actively participated in the lecture.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
D2L provides a lot of flexibility and is very reliable with little downtime. They are fantastic about responding to customer needs and do frequent releases.

D2L's Brightspace and Online Learning

  • July 15, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like that Brightspace is easy for Administrators, Faculty, and Students to use. The interface is intuitive, the community for support is knowledgeable, and it does everything we need it to do to support and deliver a quality program!
What do you dislike about the product?
I would like it to 'remember' more settings for me as an administrator.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are delivering quality courses and orientation modules for our students in an online setting. Students definitely like the look and feel and find it easy to use right off the bat to start the program.

D2L is innovative and intuitive.

  • July 15, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Instructors have everything they need to run an organizedand informative class
What do you dislike about the product?
If I had to pick one aspect of D2L I would like to see change, it would be more streamlined processes regarding grade item creation. The recent update of haveing a grade item for a Dropbox assignment made automatically is a great first step.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I have been helping faculty members move their face-to-face courses to being fully remote. D2L definitely helps instructors and students both feel connected as if they were in a face-to-face setting together.
