Brightspace - Great for K - 12 students

  • July 14, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Accessibility options are excellent and enhance the experience for all learners. D2L staff are responsive and so very helpful - we enjoy working with them! Our students and their families find the LMS very easy to use, and they praise the tools that they access when working in the LMS. Our staff finds the tools very helpful in every aspect of their work - developing courses and content, assessing student work, compiling engagement data, and communicating with students experiencing challenges.
What do you dislike about the product?
Given my experiences with other LMSs, there is nothing that I have to compaing about with D2L. We have been very happy with the service and with the features of the LMS.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are reaching students from K - 12, and we are managing to use the tremendous tools in Brightspace to created universally accessible courses for our students. We can access data from the LMS to inform decisions about course materials and content and to determine levels of student engagement, and that also helps us make decisions about future course development needs and directions.

What do you like best about the product?
The flexibility of the product. Use a little - learn a bit more. Expand as you go.
What do you dislike about the product?
The functionality of the Discussions tool. It's "awkward."
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
To deliver complex course content to students in a manageable format. The benefits are "build, revise, reuse."

D2L Makes Teaching Fun and Organized

  • July 14, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I use D2L Brightspace for fully online, hybrid, and F2F courses. I love how simple and intuitive the platform is, which makes building courses a breeze. I can easily add items, move them around, and create a course that is well organized and easy to navigate.
What do you dislike about the product?
I like having information at my fingertips when grading, and I've found with the new design, I have to open the assignment in a separate window to access it while grading. Just a slight annoyance.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have used the competency feature in Brightspace to help streamline our assessment process - something we dreadfully needed to improve, and Brightspace helped us do that.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Talk with others using Brightspace, from faculty and students to administrators, so you understand how the platform works from various perspectives.

Brightspace review

  • July 14, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
D2L support and customer service are excellent. Helpful with all issues and looking to assist with new initiatives and projects. The implementation team was helpful and accommodating. We had a bit of a unique situation, and they were able to help meet our needs.
What do you dislike about the product?
I can't think of anything in particular, but nothing is perfect. I've used another LMS and I just find them to be different. Different layout, utilities and some different integration possibilities.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We solved taking our in-class learning online when covid hit in March 2020. Being able to continue classes during quanrantine was a benefit.

The learning environment is easy for students and professors to use. It can be used by all.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are some limitations to the software and not all tools work to their potential.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It was very good to have a platform during the pandemic that allowed our professor and students to move to remote quickly and efficiently with training.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
There is always a learning curve to any new technology but it is always worth it.

LMS Review

  • July 14, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Being able to communicate with users anywhere. Ease of use to post announcements, course materials, assignments and by setting up modules with dates or restrictions there is a lot of control over what the student sees and when. The tool that seems most beneficial is the Dropbox because it keeps a nice record of all uploads and is easy to use for any type of assignment - written document or media document.
What do you dislike about the product?
The lack of statistics for instructors as an entire class. Class progress stats need to include much more details surrounding the Content being opened and reviewed by students - date/time they clicked on document, did they print or stay online to review it. The next item that is due in sequence for the course (discussion/dropbox/quiz) should be next on the chart and show the date/time the student clicked on it and when it was completed it should automatically pop in a green light and all the items due for the course should be listed in the order they were assigned by date to be due. Far more stats on what/where the student is exactly in the course module path of things. Much of these stats are there now, but scattered around the interface and not summarised nicely in one location. Some of the stats are not there and it makes it difficult. Instructors need to feel a stronger presence from the student in the system and just knowing they attended today and when the last attempt occurred, isn't a real picture of what the student did for hours, especially if they didn't turn in the assignment and they claimed they were trying to upload but it wouldn't work or that they reviewed the material and they were confused, so nothing is showing as actually even being reviewed (their word against no stats)...just saying that this is a common need.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ability for students to access any time of day or night to see materials. Ability for students to upload assignments and a system that doesn't confuse what the student uploaded into a big pile in the backend (like MS). It's organized so nicely by assignment folders and students work and it's not hard to locate to grade. Nothing falls into a misc folder somewhere in lala land with spinning and no access to the product. The product is reliable and it has been working well for many years. It continues to be developed regularly. It's not in "beta" continuously and the CORE product works always. The whole system is barely down ever. D2L support staff have lots of patience and very polite staff. It's been reliable, accessible -- stable even through the worst of covid. Only the users own ISP has been a problem and it's not all the users, just those who have terrrible bandwidth. However, I have found even with the worst bandwidth that a file will upload, if you try again. A media file will take forever, but a regular Word document will go up very quickly. Hopefully, the ISP provisions for students will make it a level playing field in the future (rural vs. urban areas) and we all will have faster upload speeds and less issues for them. At least the product is accessible and there is support for users having those issues, if they would just call (since there is 24/7 support by voice; unlike other vendors who just have message submissions) instead of complain that they can't get it to work.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Compare costs and consider the essential CORE needs

Amazing Integrations

  • July 13, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
At the University of Arizona, we use so many D2L integrations for our faculty. I can't imagine having them teach without D2L and/or the integrations provided. It's made teaching and learning much easier for faculty and students.
What do you dislike about the product?
The interface is a little outdated and could use a GUI upgrade.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The integrations we utilize make things more seamless and less manual.

Evolving LMS for Students and Faculty

  • July 13, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
D2L is always listening to their customers to see what they need in the product; they are always striving to make the product the best it can be.
What do you dislike about the product?
Because they are constantly updating (once per month) this can make keeping students and faculty up-to-date on the system challenging.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Brightspace helps us manage our courses for our students, share important information with students, and help make the connection between students, instructors, and the classroom feel seamless.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The best recommendation I can make is to work with a Technical Account Manager. They are an incredible group of people who work with you to help ensure that you, your faculty, and your students are able to succeed.

Great experience working with D2L!

  • July 13, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I love the easy and clean UI. I love the simplicity and intuitiveness of the platform but with the ability to customize and do more advanced features where necessary.
What do you dislike about the product?
Brightspace lacks some of the robust features of other LMS competitors in the space, or they introduce these "new" features years after they have been present in other LMS systems.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are using innovative ways to do both competency-based education and problem-based learning in Brightspace for a new modality to deliver online programs.

Review of the Brightspace Mail tool

  • July 13, 2021
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the fact that an email can be sent to multiple sections (org units). I also like that the tool can be filtered to display all messages or only messages related to the course/org unit you're viewing.
What do you dislike about the product?
Selecting recipients proves to be confusing for a lot of users. The need to select the "to", "cc", or "bcc" option before the recipients are added is almost always a missed step. And when it is missed, there is no error message to let the user know what was missed. They just get frustrated because "nothing happens". Maybe it should be a "next" screen to select the field or at a minimum, display an error message so that the user knows they have to select one of the 3 options in order to add the recipients.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
With the integrated mail tool, instructors don't have to "look up" email addresses or worry about messages filtering to a spam folder. Also, in combination with the intelligent agents, automatic email messages and early alerts can be sent to students.
