Good resource for tech-heavy topics

  • May 14, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Grade organizing is a big one, as well as being able to lay out class resources, further reading, Powerpoint slides, and other weekly resources in one place, with relatively easy interface.
What do you dislike about the product?
Interface can still be clunky and non-intuitive in terms of naming, location of commonly used items, and copy/moving elements around.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Grading is a major one, and time management for myself and students is easier to plan and improve on.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Most of my complaints are based on my specific usage, and I generally find a good solution once I've learned more of the UI and features. Students and Admin find their way through it relatively easy.

The good, the bad, the ugly.

What do you like best about the product?
Good. It is self-contained and allows for privacy for small groups. This is good. So it is improving with time. This is probably one of the best out there.
What do you dislike about the product?
Bad. It is not easy to use at times, and you have to find an expert to help you.

Ugly. People can't find things. You have to tell them what to click. That is not good because things should just make sense. So some things are not intuitive. Thus, the design is lacking. You have too many menus. There is a menu on the top and menus on the side. Folks get lost.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The security of having a closed system has its benefits.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
There is a learning curve.

D2L: gets the job done, but not as efficient as I would like.

What do you like best about the product?
I enjoy the ease of uploading assignments and notes. It is simple to add documents when necessary.
What do you dislike about the product?
The site has a tendency to be unavailable at times, which is very difficult when you are depending on the information that is stored on the site.
It is also a little clunky when using some of the classroom tools. I feel there is a lot of information that is unnecessary on the home page.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It is great for general communication with students to provide the necessary classroom items. I believe the integration of Turnitin.com into the site has enabled an easier submission of research papers.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is great for general use (communication, posting documents, research submission), but lacks in user-friendly information. I have attended classes to better grasp the features, but it is still a lot of information that is unnecessary to the general user.

Review of D2L Brightspace

  • May 02, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Compared to other products on the market, I like the user interface, reporting features, and instructional design wizard.
What do you dislike about the product?
I wish students were able to create discussion boards and chat rooms without the need for professor involvement.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
N/A
Recommendations to others considering the product:
D2L is intended to be a "whole" system. As such, I would recommend using all of the products from the beginning rather than a staggered implementation, despite the advice provided by the company to do the staggered approach.

D2L is a very competent product, easy to navigate and has all the functionality I need.

What do you like best about the product?
The fact that D2L is a all-in-one solution, you don't have to go to a different website to get your assignments and tasks done.
What do you dislike about the product?
Last time I used the software (~ May 2015) D2L didn't have a real mobile interface, making it hard to use on a mobile device. I also had issues with the dropbox functionality, which may have been something sporadic.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I'm confused by this question.
I was a primary user of D2L, and gave basic support to students who were also users of the platform. From a technical perspective, D2L has always been very stable. It's a solution that staff, faculty and students enjoyed using. I guess our business problem was having a platform to deploy tests, communicate with students, and share lessons. All those tasks were fully realized by D2L.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Schedule a demo so you can see what the software is capable of. Educational software can be tricky, the different terms can be tricky (i.e. dropbox instead of upload), seeing D2L in action will help you better understand the tool and how easy it is to use it.

D2L as LMS

  • April 29, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Not sure I have anything great to say about it, but I never used anything but Blackboard and D2L. Both seem outdated.
What do you dislike about the product?
I am a good user of technology. I found D2L to be difficult to learn, definitely not intuitive, disorganized.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As LMS, the benefits are clear. The ability to organize my materials online.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Learn the newest systems (Moodle, etc) and catch up. This company is a dinosaur.

D2L Dazzle!

  • April 29, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The short interactive tutorial available to faculty and students.
What do you dislike about the product?
The way the rubrics are now in the dicussion boards. I like that they are in there, but it seems big and cluncky.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am able to share the links to the tutorials with my faculty members so they can learn how to complete a task as well as teaching them how to fish. What I mean is that I keep sending them to Brightspace for the answers they rely on me for, and now they just cut me out of the loop and go directly to Brightspace. This makes everyone more productive and self-sufficient.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
There tools can be used for so much more if you just think outside of the box.

D2L

What do you like best about the product?
It is pretty easy to upload a wide variety of files and links very quickly
What do you dislike about the product?
The design and layout are cumbersome. Not user friendly or easy to find features
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Easy to track grades. Drop box makes it very simple for students to turn in papers/assignments.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Allows you to do everything you need to do. Just not intuitive, takes a lot of time to get things done the way you want them. Switching between views is tedious you don't know what things will look like to others unless you switch your role. Makes it easy to think you have posted something and you haven't.

Very helpful, but could be more user-friendly

  • April 28, 2016
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
There isn't another platform that I know of that really competes with how Brightspace is used in universities. They offer most of the tools needed to run a course online, and new tools are always being added. I also love the gradebook feature. It allows me to keep all of my grades organized in one place, let my students see their grades, and it even calculates grade totals for me based on my settings.
What do you dislike about the product?
By nature, the way D2L is set up for my university is not extremely engaging. It looks like a program developed by coders with few graphic designers involved. This causes students to sometimes see it as "boring school" instead of an innovative environment. I have also seen other platforms for business that encourage collaboration more, which I would like to see done in D2L. It is also not very user-friendly for teachers or students. I have had several students be unsure of how to accomplish something in D2L, and there have been several things that I have to do as a teacher that are more complex than they should be. Another thing that could be improved is that Brightspace and D2L could be more clear about what features are available. I am always learning about features that I would have used earlier had I known they existed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use D2L to give my students information and resources that I can't give them in class. It also helps me because it is connected to Turnitin, so I can have my students papers automatically checked for plagiarism. It is great being able to have students turn papers in on D2L to have a backup copy of all of their major papers in case anything gets lost, stolen, etc. It's also great that students can take quizzes that involve them listening to audio to answer the questions. As a music teacher, this is extremely beneficial.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are using D2L, dig into Brightspace's resources as well as resources posted by your own workplace or other workplaces about D2L. Each university's version may be slightly different, but sometimes you can understand the process you need to take by looking at another university's tips on D2L usage.
