Customizable with a self-service portal and a good security posture

  • October 06, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

Jamf Pro enables us to centrally manage nearly 1,000 Macs across multiple offices and US states, from optional installs that end users can implement at their own convenience, to mandatory applications and settings that must be enforced in a highly regulated industry.

Jamf Pro is a critical part of our overall security posture at the OS and application levels, by identifying, remediating, and (when necessary) remotely locking problematic devices.

Jamf Pro assists our support teams with managing major OS upgrades, from testing to production deployment, and restricting a new OS or update until validation and approval.

How has it helped my organization?

Without Jamf Pro, our Mac and executive support teams would have to directly interact with hundreds of devices per day, installing apps and updates or managing settings.

Jamf helps us achieve a standardized environment by keeping devices on current or N-1 releases, and notifying users when they have required actions pending.

Jamf makes deploying customized installations trivial by natively supporting all macOS scripting languages (bash, Python, etc). When other operating systems in my organization need days to repackage something, my team deploys in hours.

What is most valuable?

The self-service portal enables standard users to install and update software, change settings, and open organizational URLs. It does require an 'ah-HAH' moment from the users, to drive the mindset that self-service should always be your first destination when you have an issue or a question, rather than raising a ticket or calling the help desk.

Compared to a traditional group membership structure, Jamf can identify devices based on their own dynamic factors, improving the ability to customize and deliver necessary actions to only the relevant devices.

What needs improvement?

Policies enabled for self-service should have keywords attached, so that multiple search terms can direct to a single preferred result, without having to clutter the description field.

The new remote support tool is still lacking features compared to other industry solutions.

There is no built-in functionality for tracking changes over time for multiple devices.

All patch reporting is only a current snapshot. The password management tools are fairly outdated.

The web console (GUI) is slow with maddening UI/UX inconsistencies.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution since Casper v5, in early 2007.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

Jamf Pro does have some tech debt in terms of usability and experience, however, I have never doubted that they deliver a safe, stable, and secure management capability.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It scales. Jamf's largest customers have fleets in the tens of thousands of devices.

How are customer service and support?

They have friendly support that has shown remarkable improvement over the past few years.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

My current organization has always used Jamf Pro for macOS device management.

How was the initial setup?

New Jamf deployments will be as simple or complex as the needs of the environment. My preferred way to explain Jamf is "who, what, when" - which users or devices are getting what software or settings, at the user's discretion or the admin's.

What about the implementation team?

What was our ROI?

Macs boot faster, crash less often, last longer, and have fewer security threats than other OSes. Jamf helps us gather, prove, and interpret this data.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Jamf Pro has a reputation as being expensive per device; I think that after a successful implementation, the value becomes readily apparent. When you calculate the differences between on-site technical staff for every N device per site, versus a fleet administrator supporting every device at every site - while letting the software be 'always on' thus minimizing the impact of time zone differences - the cost becomes a non-issue.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

My current organization chose this solution long before I joined them. Over the years, however, I have evaluated or demoed alternatives, including AirWatch, Addigy, Fleetsmith, Kandji, InTune, and Jumpcloud.

What other advice do I have?

There's a reason that Jamf Pro is the gold standard for Mac management.

Best solution if managing both Mac and iPad in K12

  • October 03, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Working with Jamf Pro for 8 Years i like this product being the best solution for extensive macOS Management.
The Binary in combination with Extension attributes allows the Admin to retrieve information about the managed Computers and also enables them to do intensive tasks with own scripts and programs.
What do you dislike about the product?
I love the Home Screen Layout Profiles on Jamf School. These are missing in Jamf Pro.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Managing computers in managed environment often requires settings that can not be set by simple profiles. Jamf binary enables deeper access to system functions and settings.

What do you like best about the product?
You're missing out if you're not using Jamf in an IT K-12 environment. It's a solid product and will automate your biggest headaches for you. We've explored many alternatives and always come back to Jamf. Onboarding is great and getting going does not take long. Customer Support has improved significantly over the years and is much better now. Wouldn't change for the world.
What do you dislike about the product?
None I can think of. It really is solid.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Disributing 10,000 devices to students.

Good for remote management with great remote wipe and lock functionality

  • October 02, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use the solution for MDM and remote management. We have a very simple environment.

How has it helped my organization?

Jamf has allowed the company to have control and visibility over all the assets and it has helped us manage everything remotely and at a distance with a click.

What is most valuable?

The remote wipe and lock features are by far the best tools. They help protect our data whenever we offboard people from the company.

What needs improvement?

If I had to suggest an area of improvement would be the UI. It can be very all over the place and complex. This makes the learning curve for users far more complicated. Other than that, it is all good.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used it since I joined the company - two years. It was being used before. I'm super happy with it!

Best MDM Ever

What do you like best about the product?
The remote management capabilities and the way we are able to script and automate processes and policies.
What do you dislike about the product?
The UI overall can be overwhelming. If there was a way to simplify it would be great.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As we have a lot of remote users we are able to manage remotely everything at a distance of a click.

Worth the cost with good patch management and excellent speed

  • October 01, 2023
  • Review provided by PeerSpot

What is our primary use case?

We use Jamf Pro to manage our Apple devices throughout our worldwide locations in both our offices and manufacturing factories.

We deploy both iOS and macOS devices such as iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple TVs.

Jamf Pro is essential to our IT and InfoSec teams. It is used to deploy applications, update software versions, and offer patch management. We also set restrictions or push custom applications via configuration profiles and policies depending on department and role.

Jamf Pro inventory updates are also essential for meeting our metrics and security goals & standards.

How has it helped my organization?

Jamf Pro has improved our organization by offering a bird's eye view of our Apple devices. We are able to monitor our assets and ensure they are up-to-date, compliant, secure, and being used as intended.

Jamf Pro does a great job of staying out of the way of the end user while remaining very hands-on for admins at the helm.

Jamf Pro is very quick in the way it reacts to the device in question. Even for actions that have a large scope, Jamf works very quickly - almost in real-time.

Thanks to Smart Groups and patch management, a lot of the work being done is via a hands-off approach.

What is most valuable?

The most valuable aspect of the solution is speed. As opposed to other management solutions we use or have used, Jamf Pro is instant. I can deploy an application, restriction, script, patch update, etc. in real time and monitor the results. Nothing comes close to the ease of use of Jamf Pro. Our non-Apple devices are managed by InTune. When compared side by side to Jamf Pro, it's easy to see why Jamf is so well-loved in the Mac Admins community. Rather than having no ETA, or a window of 15 minutes to 15 hours, you can rely on Jamf to work as expected in a short or instant timeframe.

What needs improvement?

We use Installomator for patch management. Installomator is a massive curl script that grabs the latest available download for an application and installs silently. We are using Installomator for all applications it currently supports.

For patch management in Jamf, two Smart Groups are required as patch policies cannot be scoped as of now. This is not a major issue, as there is a great workaround by using a wrapped "member of" duplicate Smart Group. However, being able to avoid two Smart Groups for patch management would be nice.

For how long have I used the solution?

Jamf Pro has been in our organization for five years.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

It is easy to add licenses if need be. We have added many iOS devices over the years quite easily.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

We previously used AirWatch. This was before my time at my current organization. I am glad we made the switch to Jamf Pro.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

Jamf Pro is worth the cost. You will certainly find the value once you use it every day and try to imagine your role without Jamf.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

I have taken meetings with Kandji and tested devices through demos. Jamf Pro is still the preferred MDM for Apple devices in my opinion.

Fantastic management tool with a robust user community

  • September 20, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's the most widely used management tool for macOS. When we have a new task or initiative, odds are someone else has done it and documented their experience. We don't have to reinvent the wheel.
What do you dislike about the product?
not all functionality is available for on premise installs when compared to JAMF's cloud solution.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onboarding new Mac computers and managing their software lifecycle. We are able to implement zero touch far earlier than our windows counterparts.
