Onshape is an outstanding piece of software, perfect for my needs as a furniture designer.

What do you like best about the product?
It's a fluid process to go from a rough pencil and paper concept to form definition in Onshape. Modeling parts together in a part studio with the aid of variables to tweek proportions is intuitive and suits my working style making it easy to roughly iterate designs and then drill down to details when the time comes. The workflow from parts to assemblies is intuitive with streamlined mate features making it quick and easy to build assemblies, exploded views and add standard parts. Finally drawings extend the same ease of use making it a straight forward process to detail designs to standard in a proffesional manner.

The cloud nature of the software makes it extradinarily easy to share work with colleagues or to collaborate. The added benifit of a subscription based software is that it is continuously being updated. Support from the folks at Onshape has been great. I've never needed technical support for any software issues but the team has reached out on occasion to make sure my experiences have been good.

All in all this makes Onshape my go to CAD software for all my furniture designing needs with plenty of scope for my own professional development.
What do you dislike about the product?
I sometimes require the need to add aditional detail to a drawing that does not form part of the imported model geometry. As there are limited sketching tools inside a drawing it took me sometime to realise that I could just sketch it out in a part studio and then import that sketch into a drawing. This is the only aspect that wasn't so intuitive for me but makes sense in hindsight.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onshape provides an accessible modern CAD solution for design iteration, form definition and detailing intended for manufacturing. Thus it provides me with the perfect platform for designing and spec-ing furniture intended for production.

Great cad with no need for expensive hardware. There are no software crashes and updates.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is no offline version with it being SaaS. Would be great to in low/no interest areas
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We completed all of our mechanical design, using Onshape. We do not have a initial cost for hardware does great benefit for cash flow.

What do you like best about the product?
What do I like best about OnShape? Well no CAD software is perfect so you are always trying to wring the best out of what you have. This means productivity in terms of useful work done per hour and retun on investment in terms of £'s (in my case) spent on equipment/services per fee hour earned. OnShape hits both nails squarely on the head.
Total confidence that every hour spent on CAD work is retained and reusable design work or training investment. Not having to remember to save, recreating unsaved design work, sorting out which version to work on, unable to load legacy data, upgrading software. These are all non-fee-earning activities.
Get useful work done anywhere there is a descent network access, on a mid-range platform. I use to use a mobile workstation for presenting work and on-site workshops. The physical weight, concern of loosing the workstation and the cost of a replacement (in termes on £'s and time (3 days)) was, literally as well as figuratively, a weight off my shoulders when I changed to OnShape and a off-the-shelf laptop (replacement cost 1/4, replacement time 1/6, back up an running the same day).
Features are improving every quater, training and documentation is very good and its open source aspect is a untapped potential.
What do you dislike about the product?
Slow response to support. If you are use to having your hand held and needing instant support then the extra cost of other vendors is worth it.
If you are independant, resourceful and find you know more than the support team then OnShape is OK but they need to work on this.
Part of its strength is its ability to move stuff around and rename things without having to worry about conflicts and access rights. But, unless you have a bit of rigour and structure to your file handling you can get in an awful mess. With great power com great responibility... to be tidy!

Not being able to work off line or if the network is iffy (clients with rubbish wi-fi and uncooperative IT departments, the boonies, travelling).
But that said I have always found a way around this and it has never been a show stopper.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
OnShape does not solve problems that other comprable CAD software achieves. It just does things differently.
The assembly relations is a more efficient mate building process.
The product data management is effortless.
The design release process will be more efficient,if ever get around to implementing it.

Great program for 3d design

  • November 17, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
What I really like about Onshape is how easy to use, to collaborate with others. It also has a lot of features present in the majority of 3d modeling programs. Customer support is by far one of the best I've ever interacted with, so helpful and responsive. It was a very easy implementation to how we organize and use our parts library. I use it on a daily basis and I enjoy almost every minute of it.
What do you dislike about the product?
I have a Solidworks background, so some of the features are pretty similar and intuitive. That being said, the are a few quality of life upgrades I wish they would implement. One in particular is an actual 3d sketch feature, this would be absolutely helpful when we design steel frame enclosures.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It allows us to model our product in great detail, create helpful and accurate drawings for fabrication. BOM are helpful as well, they are very accurate and help a ton for our procurement department.

Onshape the future of online CAD

  • November 17, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The integration of Onshape was extremely easy, transfering over to, from our traditional CAD package (Solid Edge) to Onshape was effortless. The online tutorials allow you the ability to learn quickly while continuing to work on live projects. If there is something you cannot find the answer to, Customer support is on hand to help. Normally you will recieve a reply within the hour often sooner. If there is something missing you want onshape to do, fire off a support ticket and onshape will create an improvement request.

We frequently use Onshape on a daily bases as our main CAD package.

There are many advantages Onshape has over traditional CAD packages, the ability to work collaboratively with others, document release control, renderings, publications, sharing data with others.

Creating large, complicated assemblies with lots of moving parts is very easy to achieve with the use of mate connectors, these connectors help you position parts in relation to each other and allow you to control the movement of the part within your main assembly.

I personally like the speed of modelling multiple parts together in one place, this allows me to create dimensional constraints between parts, this is especially useful at the concept stage when you are constantly changing dimensions and clearances.

With Onshape being cloud based, we no longer have ussues around updating software. We are a large company with employees in multiple locations around the world. With the traditional CAD package we all had to agree when we would update the software, quite often this ment we would be several releases behind the latest release. Using a cloud base CAD package like Onshape takes care of this for you, therefore allowing all employees to work from the latest release.
What do you dislike about the product?
There isn't alot i don't like about Onshape.

2D drawings are the only area where improvements could be made. Sometimes 2D drawings can take a while to open.

Broardband speed does effect the overall performance of onshape (time to open parts). However i've used onshape with a 8Mbps line and it's worked fine. However i would recommend at least 20Mbps for general usage and more for larger assemblies.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Onshape allows our design department to use a collabrative design approach. We can shere data instantly between users , allowing for a faster project development.

Absolutely brilliant CAD system that is much easier to use than expected.

  • November 16, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Can be used on almost any hardware.
There is nothing that I have not been able to model in Onshape since i started using it in 2016.
It is really intuitive.
What do you dislike about the product?
There should be a setting to make the "name of a part that is seen in an assembly" default to the "name of the part" and not "part1"

It should prevent duplicate names in a document.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Allows robust control of your product which prevents problems at the build phase

The simplest and smoothest CAD solution for us

  • November 16, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
No bulky local installation and no special workstations required

Integrated parts management, which was previously only possible with complicated PDM systems

Mature versioning and branching

Sophisticated configuration functionality for all possible scenarios and features

The ability to model all related parts within a single part studio - thus safe dimensional changes based on a few basic sketches

Simple sharing of designs and intermediate statuses within the team

Integrated rendering capability (albeit somewhat cryptic compared to specialized external apps, but still useful for quick presentations)

Very simple and well thought-out module for creating drawings

Overall, straight forward work with a fun factor and quick results and successes

Good community that actively participates in development in the form of programmed feature scripts for special cases (welding, cable routing, etc.) that can be loaded into the project

Monthly reports on new features and improvements (what's new after login)

I just love it, Onshape makes me addicted!
What do you dislike about the product?
Still no possibility to place small labels, logos or simple textures on partial surfaces within an assembly (such as stickers in Solidworks). If you want to see something like this, you either have to use the Render Studio or imprint the labeling correctly into the geometry...
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Prompt development of prototypes
Safe handling of subsequent modifications and versions
Creating info drawings for our webshop customers

Is cost effective, but lacks features I like

  • November 16, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The biggest upside is that you can run on a browser and that makes hardware requirements a lot better.
What do you dislike about the product?
The downsides are that as a trained SolidWorks user a lot of things I find hard to find and some stuff just feels less powerful. I didn't use it long enough, so maybe the features were there, but they were really hard to find.
Also I think SolidWorks makes the 2D drawings much more flexible and simple, the toolbox is more complete and the multiple configuration in solidworks makes the drawings way more reusable.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I used to design and build things for the company
