OnShape is a better way to do CAD

  • August 13, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
OnShape being browser based and available across platforms wherever I am is really convenient and allows me keep working on my designs while giving very little thought to where I am, what computer system I'm using or whether I'm in our out of the office.
What do you dislike about the product?
While OnShape is primarily a 3D CAD system, I ofter wish for better access to 2D drawings I already have or 2D output.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
OnShape allows me to easily collaborate with others and never presents me with barriers to working from IT issues or and IT organisation.

It is an excellent design tool, better then SolidWorks

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It has various options for sharing with customers. Do not depend as heavily on PC resources. It does not crush and lose data. Also like straight forward mating features
What do you dislike about the product?
The system cannot save the whole project locally. This prevents the process of removing the project from On Shape servers once it is completed. The only option is to save as Parasolid file the main assembly which looses all of the mates. It would be great if the whole project with all of the components can be backed up locally.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
System crashes are gone with OnShape. It takes longer to work with big assemblies, but autosave is good, and work is never lost as it can happen with resident programs.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Test Drive it first!

The Future of CAD

  • August 13, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The standout features are the accessibility provided by it working in a browser. The in context modeling is game changing. And of course the data management compared to file based saves me hours a day.
What do you dislike about the product?
With it still in its infancy there are still some missing features. I use mostly sheet-metal and find its lagging behind the competition here.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Most of the issues we have solved revolved around file management which has completely disappeared. Being able to share with customers has helped a ton.

What do you like best about the product?
Ease of use, UI, UX, & customer support.
What do you dislike about the product?
No FEA simulation of CAM features. Needs a native weldments suite
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
My daily work is much easier while using Onshape vs Fusion 360 or Solidworks. The data management is one of the best features
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Use the forum. The users are very helpful

Ultimate experience

  • May 29, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
In short, that Onshape is an browser based (web) application.
This is how all tools should be in 2020 (or even from 2015). No installation - one just logs in from the office and works on the project, a quick fix is needed after office hours? Absolutely not a problem - just login from home. All the heavy calculations seem to be done on the server side so Onshape can be used with the cheapest hardware.
And linking documents - I must mention - linking documents where different projects can be used as what I call submodules in different projects (with version control which blew my mind when I found that out).
What do you dislike about the product?
One could argue with the price, it's a high entry point for commercial use but considering that Onshape can be used on a 6 year old PC with free and safe Linux instead of paid Windows the price becomes less high.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am designing parts meant to be 3D printed. Entry level for someone with no CAD experience is very low, documentation of the features is very good and version control helps a lot.

Onshape CAD Software Review by DarkAero

  • May 20, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We like the cloud based platform which allows us to access our files from anywhere without the need for expensive CAD workstations. We feel safe knowing our files are stored in the cloud. We also like the modeling environment especially the multipart part studios which allow for easy creation of large assemblies with interrelated geometry.
What do you dislike about the product?
I would like to see improved surface modeling features as well as a more robust radius feature tool.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are using Onshape CAD software to design an experimental aircraft. The biggest benefits we see come from the cloud based accessibility. We started off using Solidworks which tied us to a CAD workstation. We go back and forth between home, airshows, suppliers, and our workshop and we are able to easily access our CAD models anywhere with cloud based CAD.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try the Onshape out with one of their free trials and speak with other Onshape users. Check out their tutorial videos on YouTube.

What do you like best about the product?
It's could based, stable and can roll back to any previous saved model version.
What do you dislike about the product?
Price is a little bit too high for a startup company.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I don't need a super powerful laptop to run a 3D programme.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Can try with free account first to see if it really fits your need.

Where all CAD is headed

  • May 20, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Several things I like most about Onshape:
1) User interface is refined and clean, easy to use, easy to navigate and much more pleasant to look at after long hours of CAD work.
2) With it being on the cloud I don't need a stationary, expensive desktop computer or even a mobile workstation. I can literally pull my models up on my phone.
3) Every single action is saved and accessible at any moment.
4) Collaborative - can work on the same model with multiple people.
5) So useful for sharing CAD with others without having to download the file and then attach it in an email. I can just send them a link.
6) With it being on the cloud we don't have to worry about our files being lost if the computer has an issue like getting stolen, lost, or damaged.
7) Data management is integrated in with the program. You don't need a separate, 3d party PDM or data management system.
What do you dislike about the product?
Depending on your internet connection, it can get bogged down.
If you don't have internet out at your shop or if the internet goes down, you are left without any CAD.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We switched from Solidworks to Onshape. We saw an immediate benefit going to Onshape given that we no longer needed to purchase additional CAD workstations. Each employee could use his existing computer. Some of us had Macs and others PCs. It didn't matter. It worked the same on each one. Another big benefit was that we now had a way to manage all our files with our team. We are a small startup and we don't have resources dedicated to PDM or file management. With Onshape, we didn't need to create a PDM system or data management system. It was integrated in. If we had kept Solidworks, we would have needed to create an off line data management system to access all our CAD files and get them to link together for final assemblies.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are a new engineering startup and looking for a CAD system, I would highly recommend using Onshape.
