Onshape is a great CAD package

  • May 19, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It was really easy to switch from using SolidWorks to OnShape, since the founding team of OnShpae worked on SolidWorks. It's easy to use, has a nice GUI, and its cloud features are great. I can work on the same file from home or from my office without having to worry about transferring files.
What do you dislike about the product?
OnShape is not great at dealing with mesh files and non-parametric models. Uploading an STL can often lead to failed meshes and it general, it's not great at converting meshes into solids (I'm fairly sure it can't do that). I also wish that OnShape had a more standard FES capability so we could do even simple stress tests.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use OnShape for my product development company. So OnShape is our main work horse for doing everything from modeling 3D prints to creating designs for manufacturing.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Considering the hobby option, there is no reason to just try it. Even for small personal projects, like designing a chair it's handy to have access to something this powerful.

SaaS/HaaS CAD revolution is here!

  • May 17, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
NO hardware cost's. NO PDM setup cost's. Sharing, tasks and communication included. Branching like in Software. No files to save and therefore no physicals file limitations.
What do you dislike about the product?
A little learning curve, because not everything is the same as in other CAD's. Not having a local file is troubeling in the beginning, but after some time it is appreciated. Missing automatic data backup.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It's a huge time and money saver in all aspects. We also use it as a PDM and a BOM genereator for our PLM.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try it first before you purchase any old school CAD, you will not loose out anyway. If you don't find what you need (unlikely), you can still switch without much pain (no features, but that's about it).

Onshape, the way CAD should be

  • May 15, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I started using Onshape as my principle CAD very early on, and I have always appreciated their quick update cycles and response to user requests. I have never had a "crash" in all of this time, which coming from SW is amazing. The technicians have been quick to respond and helpful.
What do you dislike about the product?
The last cost increase was significant. I am concerned about the purchase by PTC and what that will entail for quality, service, and cost.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am able to share models with clients much easier. This is a huge benefit.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is a cost vs. value consideration, though, I think it is a serious contender against the much more expensive, higher learning curve, and "clumsy" Solidworks. Other online CAD software options have their strengths for less cost, but big weaknesses too. Onshape for me has been a valuable tool that does everything I need it to do at least well.

Very stable cad system

  • May 15, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
No need to save files, just close your system and walk away. Pick it up where you left it on another system. Use it on Mac and Linux the same as on a Windows OS.
No crashes!
What do you dislike about the product?
Regeneration speed of 2D drawings is slow.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Motions of complex shaped mechanism
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make the switch. It will only take a short time to get accustomed with the slightly different way of handeling parts and assemblies, but it will pay off in stability in the long run.

Collaborate and Use Anywhere, No Data Loss

  • May 15, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
No software to install, all of the features Onshape adds are always really well thought out from a user perspective. It's online and browser based so computer requirements are minimal, and can be used from anywhere at any time.
What do you dislike about the product?
On occasion there is lag in submitting commands (clicks) due to internet or system lag. If you're aware of it, it's not too bad.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Designing various consumer related sports and leisure products and renewable energy innovations.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Give it a try and look at all the benefits. Onshape is improving with upgrades (that you do nothing to benefit from) every 3 weeks. Amazing support will get you going quickly

Not your father's CAD

  • May 14, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I love the collaboration. I love the ability to show CAD changes real time with a remote client. I love not having to look for files through email. I love not have to sort through 15 folders for each project to find the 'latest' rev A. What I really love though it the API. This is a real game changer for me. This opens up the possibility for me to create custom niche products with a lot fewer resources.
What do you dislike about the product?
At this point, there are not enough users. The mental picture from Solidworks to Onshape takes a while to understand. Once you are there, you will never go back. Why create 3 mates when you only need 1? I am excited to see how the new folks coming up grasp the concepts.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
My customers are all remote. The travel time can take hours. With Onshape I can design interactively and build. With the help of UPS, they can have the result in their hand the next day.

My experience with On Shape to date

  • May 14, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Able to work online without having software installed and worrying about updates. Data is stored in the cloud and always accessible from any device and at any time.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes an internet slowdown can delay interaction with CAD model. There are a few things that the software does not do that I would like it to, which SolidWorks, another CAD software I previously used does or does better.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I do not lose data/work done on a CAD model due to software crash any more. I never have to "save" the work as it is constantly saving to the cloud.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Try it, you will like it.

Easy for data management and new very interesting part creation tool, hard to work in large assembly

  • May 14, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
No I.T., Multi part studio, simply of use.
What do you dislike about the product?
I miss powerful sketcher and query select of Creo. Really difficult to assembly part when all fixation hole are not done. Difficult also to find mate in large assembly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The management of files. Licences are less expensive. Collaboration is easier.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Onshape is easy to deploy, training material is really good. As always, switching CAD Software is not easy but the easiest I had. They propose a lot of new way to work that make complex design easier. Except problem that I write before, the rest is good.

CAD software of the tech age

  • May 14, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
OnShape just brought CAD design to simple age of cloud computing.
No need to have software version that you need to buy each time and that you lose support over time.
You always have the latest features.
You can simply share you design to others and that just perfect.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some features aren't there yet but I know they will come at some point in time.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
No need to have a powerfull workstation to do cad design.
I can have a simple laptop and design on the go anywhere as long as I have an internet connection.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Take the time to understand the way it works and how to design/assemble with it.

A breath of fresh air in CAD software

  • May 13, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The ubiquity of access and performance, across all platforms. No longer need to constantly install, configure, or otherwise manage our licenses.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is risk with not having local backups, in addition to lack of access when an unreliable internet connection is had (airplane wifi for example).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The onboarding rate and learning curve is extremely easy, and thusfar we've been able to technically document parts and machines that just haven't gotten done before.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
OnShape has been the most easy CAD software to implement and rollout. iPad support is amazing and incredibly functional, making it the easiest and most accessible CAD package I've ever seen.
