Finally, cloud based 3D package
What do you like best about the product?
Simple to run with access from every possible device. Very convenient for engineers who spend time on the road.
What do you dislike about the product?
Missing some of the features and functionalities one can find in Solidworks etc...
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use it for conceptual top level design. Primarily for marketing usage. It helps me demonstrate ideas and concepts for new solutions and products.
Don't bother trying the rest, Onshape is the best.
What do you like best about the product?
I have been using Onshape for almost 3 years, i started with a 3d printer and no CAD experience. Onshape has everything i need for my prototype designs and project needs, the interface is intuitive, simple to use, and the online tutorials and tech support is fantastic.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing to dislike, i just would like the opportunity to keep drawing during travel.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I have recently started my own business, during the design stage, prototyping products and parts, Onshape has been invaluable for not just producing a prototype but for just having the ability to draw parts and share a 3D drawing with my Chinese factories has been invaluable, i have save many hours and travel cost for time spent in factories.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
For others looking for to begin drawing and prototyping wanting to work up to advanced drawing options and wanting an all in one package, Give Onshape a try, you wont regret it.
Good everyday driver for Modeling and Drawing
What do you like best about the product?
i really like the cloud based system. it makes organization a breeze
What do you dislike about the product?
sheet metal and weldments are not the easiest
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Easy to make changes with third party consultants
Positive. Functional software, positive customer service.
What do you like best about the product?
Cloud-based software design, great documentation, resources, and ease of use. Product appears designed for collaborative use (we are just beginning, so we have not really used it this way yet). Versioning is nice conceptually. Finally accessibility from the cloud is a really good idea.
What do you dislike about the product?
Telephone tech support in real time would be nice, but it's understandable that they don't have this as I am sure it is an enormous cost.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Just getting started. No benefits yet. Hope to have configurable assembles etc.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Do the self-learning courses.
High end cad - on a Chromebook!?!?!
What do you like best about the product?
Web-based, responsive CAD allows for work-from-anywhere-on-almost-anything performance. We've adopted it for our HS Robotics team, and I've adopted it for CAD projects here at our engineering R&D firm. For the HS team, this is a total game-changer. Previous use of single or dual seat CAD options required a special computer that would then need to manage who got to use it, and when. Cloud-based Onshape runs on a Chromebook, so EVERYONE ON THE TEAM can now be a CAD user. Even if they are not contributing design input, they can pull from the team drawing to get the info they need for strategy, electronics wiring info, camera mounting, and countless other options. At work, my iMac is the go-to platform that does not need special installation of Windows emulation to accommodate the MS-centric approach dominant in engineering software tools. This is the future.
What do you dislike about the product?
I don't really "dislike" much here. Sometimes (rarely), when my servers are slow, redraw takes a little while, but that is not a "fault" per se with Onshape.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Multiple mechanical design iterations on R&D one-off projects.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Stop babysitting your high-end PC to accommodate the requirements for running high-end CAD and embrace the cloud!
The future of product design is here.
What do you like best about the product?
I love how Onshape has designed their system to take advantage of technology. They have made the design process more efficient through a sleek user interface that works well on desktop computers and mobile devices. We have also experienced helpful support, and they are often releasing new features with enhanced capability. This is what modern CAD should look like.
What do you dislike about the product?
There really isn't anything that I dislike about Onshape. In the beginning there were some features that I missed because I have significant experience with other CAD packages, however through regular updates to the Onshape software many of the updates have now been added.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
This has helped us release designs more effectively and efficiently. It has also been incredibly advantageous to store other aspects of product data within the software, uniting all the necessary information in one location. We have also delighted our customers with live demos where they have appreciated seeing the designs come to life.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Give Onshape a try. They have a great free trial period where you can see if it works for you and your organization. They have a great support staff that will help you if you have any questions along the way.
Smooth for a first-timer
What do you like best about the product?
OnShape's straightforward UI and plentiful help and training make it easy to learn and use.
What do you dislike about the product?
I can't come up with much here. Sometimes OnShape can be a little slow to open a model for me, but perhaps that's just my Internet connection.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have needed some sort of professional 2D and 3D CAD package and with OnShape we get both and then some. When I have been tasked with designing a plastic injection molded enclosure, it is OnShape that helped me to get there.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It's hard to beat the free trial - especially when all you need is a web browser! I really don't see a down side for those interested in trying.
Very user friendly
What do you like best about the product?
It’s visually appealing and well organized. User friendly is very important and a nice stepping stone to other CAD programs
What do you dislike about the product?
The fonts are small and the inferences pop up at random times
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use OnShape to model my students robots
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The Onshape Learning Center is very helpful and thoroughly teaches you how to use their program
The future of CAD
What do you like best about the product?
I like the cost, the support and interactions with with developers, and the way that CAD data is not reliant on a file structure. The CAD data is structured so that it can easily be referenced in many different ways, with visibility and control over the version being referenced.
What do you dislike about the product?
Some advanced features are missing that are included with other packages (basic simulation, rendering, animations). There is also a learning curve due to the lack of a traditional file based data structure. With versions, revisions, releases, and branches, thought needs to be put into how the tool can best support your workflow. This is a hurdle to adoption, but I think the flexibility is a benefit in the long run.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Onshape for the design of our medical devices. It allows our remote team members to collaborate easily and provides us with some basic PLM and PDM functionality without having to have our own server and expensive add-ons.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Check out the forums to talk to users and the developers to see if your needs are met. Updates are released every three weeks and the thing you need might be just around the corner. There are also user-developed functions that you can use for advanced or niche functionality.
Easy CAD
What do you like best about the product?
I like the versatility of OnShape. It is nice not having to truck around a heavy laptop to run CAD. Makes it easier for presenting concepts to potential customers and outside sales reps, via smartphone app.
What do you dislike about the product?
The weldment feature could use some help. It would be more beneficial, for how I design, if the weldment properties were pre-loaded.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Accuracy and increased throughput for design feedback, has increased. I am able to share my conceptual designs with business partners and customers, prior to generating a full-detailed drawing package. This allows us to communicate more frequently because how quickly someone can view the file from their smart phone.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Involve OnShape tech support for how your part structure will be organized on the backside. How your parts, weldments, etc will look like. This will ultimately determine your BOM structure if you are manufacturing products.
