Onshape is the best CAD that I have used!

  • April 06, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
With Onshape I can change the model while the customer or client is viewing it and understand what they want changed instantly. There is no waiting for files to be transferred and reviewed and time wasted on wrong changes.
When I have a large job to be done with a short lead time I can have others helping on the model right down to the same sketch.
The configurations save a lot of time, no large lists to pick through to find the right part, just set your parameters from drop down lists or check boxes and your done.
No other CAD program can do what Onshape can do in these areas, they are way ahead.
There is so much more, you can access your model from your phone, laptop or tablet, you don't need a high end CAD computer to run the program, you can share your model and know it will always be the latest version even if you do changes after sharing. If you need CAD, I would definitely recommend trying Onshape. There are areas still to be developed but with their 3 weekly updates, improvements are coming all the time.
What do you dislike about the product?
The downside to Onshape is that I wish they were around years ago then I would not have so much data to transfer from my old CAD system. The only thing I really struggle with is large assemblies, they are slow and take time to load, this is an issue with most parametric CAD systems and I am yet to find something better.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
One of the main problems it solves is the speed. I can have designs modeled faster without worring about file paths and file names, or going down a path that does not work as I can roll back to any point in the design process and start from there. The customer can view the product all the time as it is devloping so any changes can be made early on before it is goone too far down a wron g path. Also no transfer of files which is a great for security and IP protection and everyone is on the same page, no second guesing. Also we don't need servers or an in-house IT guy to maintain the CAD systems. We can just get on and do what we are meant to do, design!

Onshape refining CAD

What do you like best about the product?
As an old S*lidworks user, the most nicest thing is to have a good collaboration features. You can share and comment ideas etc really fast and efficiently.
What do you dislike about the product?
It goes forward so fast that I have difficulties to get time to learn all new stuff :-)
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
It helps a lot with small product development projects when customer is not so familiar with CAD...collaboration is so much easier than sending pdf's or similar.

Best parametric CAD software out there.

  • April 04, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I have been using parametric CAD software for 15 years. Most of that time has been spent with SolidWorks but I have also used Autodesk Inventor, Fusion 360, and others. While I admit that it took me a month or two to get my head wrapped around the modeling philosophy of Onshape, once I did it was much faster and easier to use than any other CAD software.
Some of my favorite features include multi-part files, how mating works in assemblies, the robust version control, detailed document histories, that it can run on my Mac (in the Chrome browser), the amazing mobile application for iOS, and the lower cost. I also very much appreciate the high speed at which the software is being developed. New features are coming out quick and bugs are addressed in days and weeks instead of years.
What do you dislike about the product?
There are obvious limitations of being a 100% browser-based software. I have the ability to set up a hotspot with my phone while I travel and that allows me to continue modeling on the go but every now and then I find that I would like to work off-line.
I got started with Onshape while they offered a free version if your projects were public. While I became a paying customer before they changed this, I am sad that more people cant get easy access to the software. Specifically, makers and high school or homeschooling students.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
In the beginning, the lower cost of Onshape was one of the major factors for my business. But now that I am a little more established and have access to SolidWorks, I still choose to use Onshape for all of the projects that I can. I found that I was faster at building models and assemblies in Onshape after only 6 months than I had ever been in SolidWorks after 15 years.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are transitioning from SolidWorks, take the time to understand the modeling philosophy of Onshape. Multi-part documents, Mate connectors, and other features are different from Solidworks but very powerful once understood.

Onshape changed our design philosophy

  • April 01, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The web based design. I can get to it anywhere, and I do not have any overheads with software downloads to our computers. (In a high IT security environment, this can be cumbersome). I am also always running the latest revision of the software, no downloads or up-sells for newer revisions.
What do you dislike about the product?
Onshape does what I want. Some of my team would like a McMaster Carr interface, as hardware should be easy to get to.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
"When you fail, fail cheaply"... Onshape works well with 3D printing, and ease of use. It is the easiest platform I have ever learned. We designed and built an entirely new tape and bind solution that has no peer and we did it in house with Onshape. The concept to failure to success cycle was minimized.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I tried it for free, it had all the functionality of the paid subscription so I recommend you do the same. If you do not see what you want with the as-built process, there is an app for that in the embedded app store so no worries. Pick a design, pick a 3D Printing process and get to work, do not be afraid of failure.

Amazing CAD experience

  • March 31, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
There are many things that I love about Onshape, such as: (1) I can design multiple parts together in a single "part studio," and a whole project can live inside a single document (all parts and subassemblies are inside the same document). (2) I can run it on almost any computer with a web browser, and even on my phone (very useful when I need to check a model and I'm not near a computer). (3) I can seamlessly share projects across my team and collaborators. (4) I can easily see and navigate the history of a document and seamlessly go back to previous states of the document. (5) I can easily collaborate remotely on a project with others - we can all be looking at (and manipulating) the same document simultaneously. (6) No need to waste multiple days of work installing new versions of the software and dealing with the inevitable complications that come with upgrades. (7) No need for IT personnel to be maintaining license and PDM servers.
After using OnShape for 2+ years, going back to SolidWorks to work on legacy files feels very jarring, especially when dealing with SolidWorks PDM, which is horrible. Using SolidWorks feels like traveling back in time to the 90s. Onshape is light years ahead of SolidWorks in many respects.
What do you dislike about the product?
The "merging" feature in the version control system does not work well and can destroy a document.
It doesn't come with simple simulation capabilities as SW does.
It can sometimes be quite slow to regenerate a model after an edit.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We design and build machines. OnShape allows my team to be more productive and reduces errors and confusion. Ensuring everybody always has the correct version of a document when they need it is a non-issue with OnShape - while it's pretty painful with SolidWorks PDM.
Working remotely during the pandemic would have been a massive hassle if we had been using SolidWorks (our laptops are Macs, so we would have had to switch to Windows, we would all be forced to work connected to our VPN to be able to access the PDM server, etc.).
Recommendations to others considering the product:
We love it, but keep in mind that moving legacy data from another CAD system will be painful (parts and assemblies can be imported, but all features and mates are lost and would have to be re-created in Onshape). We decided to leave all legacy data in SolidWorks and use Onshape for new projects only.

Great CAD for small to medium manufacturing company

  • March 22, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
OnShape has modeling tools that are comparable to (and in some cases exceed) the capability and ease of use of other CAD systems running the Parasolid kernel. Where it shines, however, is in the data structure. OnShape lets you branch and merge CAD data like programmers do with code.
What do you dislike about the product?
The 'managed' release management workflow is a little too rigid for my tastes. Fortunately the versioning and merge tools with manual REV control work very well for that purpose.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
OnShape handles Revision control while still keeping legacy copies of data easily accessible (and restoreable). CAD backups are handled on the back end, so no more daily downtime when the backup is running.

Also, we have two different 'CAD Jockeys' working on the same models. OnShape makes modeling collaboration so simple we forget that it is any different than working alone (as compared to the convoluted check-in-check-out/handoff/sneakernet we used before).
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Rethink your modeling workflow to take advantage of versions, branching, and merging. USE PART PROPERTIES and reference them in your drawings to save time re-entering data into your sheets (right click on the part at the bottom of the feature tree to create a drawing of the part itself, rather than of the part studio). Change the state of parts and drawings in versions to indicate whether they are released or obsolete.

Great Product

  • March 13, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
OnShape is very intuitive and easy to use, much more so than other tools I tried. As someone who is relatively new to CAD, but also has a strong software background, it's a pleasure to use OnShape. The way it works seems like the "right" way to do CAD (admittedly I have not used other tools extensively).
What do you dislike about the product?
There isn't anything I don't like, it has been able to do everything I need. The frequency of updates is also a big plus, even requests I made were delivered in a timely fashion.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use OnShape to design new product concepts, and the main benefit is that I can quickly "prototype" my ideas in the tool to see how feasible they are. Then I can turn those ideas into test products too.

New but Experienced director

  • March 13, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
For the last decade I was in a director role where my team had SW and I really didn't do more than pencil sketch my drafting direction and also use SketchUp for carving butter forms and Keyshot for renderings. In January of 2018 I dove in as a direct user. With 33 years of design experience drafting was not new. Parametrics was. Computer based design was not. So, in the seat and forced to create forms for a production ready part on my first project, Onshape did the trick. The layout and user interface is great and the advances in the sheet metal functions are cool. The outputs were easily transferable to my Asian manufacturing facilities and by my 3rd project speed was not an issue. Most everything was pretty intuitive.
What do you dislike about the product?
I'm not good with hunting and searching through user groups for tricks and many of the demos are geared toward newby drafters or non-converts. Many of the pre-recorded webinars I watched got interrupted because the facilitator took questions way early in the webinar and seemed to delve into one user's issues rather than staying more global on the subject as a whole. The auto function of placing ANSI fasteners is great except there seems not to be threads on the bolts. Maybe I don't have a setting correct that gives me a naked bolt but I don't have patience to hunt for a solution so I have to have an engineer at the manufacturing site modify the designs. Wish I could set that up directly.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Mobility. Mobile access with cloud based server storage of my designs, accessible anywhere is super.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Good platform. Excellent alternative to others on the market. Lives up to industry needs.

Onshape is an innovative platform for interactive CAD modeling

  • March 11, 2019
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
They have an amazing team integrating new updates regularly, great support, and a while new approach to data management.
What do you dislike about the product?
As a developing, relatively new system, there are various features used in other similar applications which are not yet implemented.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smooth team interagration. Powerful time saving features. Cloud based data management.
