    Stewart B.

Simple but comprehensive translation engine.

  • August 31, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Easily works together with contentful and it's in context view really enables higher quality translations
There are lots of languages that are available and it makes the process of managing translations so much easier than other systems we have used in the past
The integration straight into contentful has been really good, linking each content peice straight into the platform is seemless and I have really enjoyed that link.
What do you dislike about the product?
The email notifications are a bit much, it would be nice if there was a digest you could subscribe to instead of so many individual emails.
If you could more easily connect the two platforms (smartling and contentful) that would be easier for us to jump in and see translations and get specific things retranslated.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Scaling our translation efforts, it's made it much easier to launch more languages
The benefits of being able to open up more more options to new languages and having a team of translators ready and waiting to jump on and get new content re-written and ready for new countries has been a huge benefit to the business
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you are just getting started make sure you evaluate the long term solution for translations for your business, the migration process, especially when you have lots of content and lots of languages is certainly a difficult process so if you start with the best system from the start you are in a really good position.

Smartling is simple and intuitive, has numerous features for a complete localisation solution.

What do you like best about the product?
I like the simplicity of its UI and the fact that it can read/parse numerous file types is very convenient. No more need to convert any documents just to get them translated, unlike translation solutions I've used before. The Smartling account managers are also very responsive to our needs, and always includes us in discussion oh how they can further improve our experience.
What do you dislike about the product?
The search function lacks a few filters to find very specific strings/set of strings, though this can be overcome with a bit of patience when searching. One other thing is a feature where you can save a specific language set for a specific project, so that whenever a job is created, there would be no need to select languages manually. This is more of a quality of life feature however, and does not impact the functionality of Smartling at all.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We've been experimenting with several file types to localise different areas in our work, and Smartling makes this easy by allowing these file types to be translated directly. I also like the fact that Smartling has customisable codes that can be added in the files for better parsing.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Smartling is a great tool for all translation needs. The UI is simple enough as well to implement and cascade to any new user of an organisation. Plus, the Smartling team are continuously improving the tool and is receptive to feedback and suggestions, so expect this tool to keep improving in the future.

Translation and localisation in a Smart way

  • August 29, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
From my experience of using CAT tools, Smartling is it way ahead of it's competitors in terms of functionality and niche features.
What do you dislike about the product?
It might be a bit too overwhelming at the start, but as soon as you're able to familiarize yourself with the nooks and crannies of this CAT tool, it should be easy to deal with.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling takes the complexity, cost and time out of the translation process by providing us an automated, cloud-based translation management platform and comprehensive translation services. There's real time visibility and their engineering team is continuously making improvements on the platform itself.

On thing unique about this platform is their "in-context" translation interface that provides translation resources with full visibility into site design and layout during the entire translation process. Translations are accurate for meaning and format the first time, reducing time consuming edits and fixes to your multilingual content. Think of a website loaded on the translation interface. Having access to this while translating is neat right? Not only you will be able to see your translation in a staging environment, it would also allow you to make adjustments as needed in order for the translation to fit right in. Or if that doesn't work, you can report immediately that it wouldn't have a positive effect once it is made live.

It also comes with a built-in quality insights tool that at a glance, will give one an idea how the translation vendors they're working with are doing with quality.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you're a starting company and would want to have a early start at brand globalization, try to request for a demo from Smartling about how they could help you out.

Easiest & Best Translation Service I've Used

  • August 28, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The UI. The Smartling interface is simple, yet you can really get in there and modify options to your heart's content. The available options let you accomplish just about anything in terms of translation.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is nothing I dislike about Smartling. Due to the amount of options/configuration, there is a learning curve - I wish there was a 15m quick overview of everything you can do.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We went from WPML to Smartling and it really took the manual process of editing different sections of the website out of my hands. The benefits are obvious, an external proxied source managing your translations - it's great
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Do your research, ask for a demo from Smartling. It's really an amazing service

A handy tool for automatic translations without too much hassle

  • August 28, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Automatically opens PRs
Quality of translations is a lot better than the usual tools that have no context about what they are translating
What do you dislike about the product?
There's problems with encoding sometimes ( \% gets escaped again into \\% which does not compile on Android..)
Ignores 'translatable=false'
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Better quality translations than our previously used tool (Qordoba)
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Make sure to add context

Powerful localisation tool 💪

  • August 28, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
- Smartling streamlines the translation process so my team can put more focus into the other tasks that improve our website.

- It allows the team to track the progress of translations in real-time.

- It also detects duplicated translations and fills them in without requiring us to get it translated.

- Flexible, integrates with our Contentful setup pretty seamlessly.

- We don't need to seek out translators for all our available languages, Smartling does that for us.
What do you dislike about the product?
- Takes a while to get used to the interface and workflow. The interface, navigation, and workflow can be a bit clunky at times. Once you've figured it out, it's super powerful.

- The design could be modernised a bit but it's not a huge downside.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
- Managing multiple translators and languages takes a lot of time and effort when we manage it internally.

- Our localised pages attract a huge amount of extra traffic for our site, so we've definitely noticed a benefit.

Happy with utilising Smartling for eLearning course content translation

  • August 27, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We have been using Smartling for translating our educational courses since earlier this year. It is very user friendly and we are able to get on board quickly with the tool with very minimal training. We have been using French, Spanish and German machine translation with human review and management. Since translation always involve multiple people, this tools works well at providing us with the dashboard and coordination with different partners.
What do you dislike about the product?
It would be great to see more language being supported by Smartling and also some terms/vocabularies added to the library.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We have saved a lot of time by bringing the translation tasks internal to our organization. In addition, we are also seeing cost reduction as well because we can manage the bulk using machine translation and then coordinate with human reviewer.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Machine translation supported by modern technology will be the future to save us time and money, so it is about time to jump on this wagon.

Fantastic Service!

  • August 27, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Smartling's back-end translation tool is second to none. It is easy to navigate and use, even for those who have not use translation services in the past.
What do you dislike about the product?
I wish I would have used Smartling's translation services rather than our in-house translation team. That is what has held up our implementation. The Smartling team has been great to work with.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling makes it easy to keep track of translations. The content on our site changes often so being able to have an automated system to track translations is a life saver. I've tried to do this manually in the past and that was a nightmare.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I think Smartling has a solid product with great support behind it. Good job!

Very user-friendly CAT tool with state of the art features which is constantly improving.

  • July 01, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I find the tool easy to navigate and I love the Github and the Zendesk integrations, which hugely help automating the localization process. I also like the multiple options to provide information to linguists: visual context, translator instructions, general context (files, etc.), project description, and how easy to view they are. The team has always been open to feedback and they're constantly working on improving features and adding new ones.
What do you dislike about the product?
While the tool has some really cool features, it lacks some basic ones, like giving access to specific areas of the tool to stakeholders on a case by case basis rather than having one size fits all permission levels. There are a few little things like that that could be improved. We've shared feedback with Smartling, so hopefully they'll be able to work on that and fine tune the tool.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling helps us handle translation requests from every department in the company mostly automatically. As we need to service new products/teams with different needs, our customer success manager, account manager and other members of the Smartling team have helped us accommodate all the new requirements.
We've also had some issues with the string-sharing feature that is active by default. Thankfully it's possible to disable it, but undoing its work is not easy. I believe this is something that should be discussed with the customer before they start using the tool.

What is Smartling?

  • June 25, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Smartling is a web-based platform for document, website and app localization. It is much more than a simple CAT tool, as it also manages terminology, glossaries both on a project level as well as on a client level. In one single place you can also manage vendors (which Smartling call suppliers), and team members of all levels. It also makes it easy for clients to submit job requests and to deliver back finalized projects without the need of handling files via email or shared folders.
Their support team is also a plus - great people that know what they are doing and that know the localization industry pretty well. I have been working with Smartling for over 3 years now, and having their support team gives me a lot of peace of mind. I know they will be able to meet all our needs, no matter what.
What do you dislike about the product?
While Smartling tries to do a lot of everything, sometimes it might seem a little too cumbersome and bloated, feature-wise. Navigation can be confusing, and the way it manages financials is not really ideal. As of now our internal TMS does not have the proper connector to exchange financial information to and from Smartling, so we still need to resort to using spreadsheets and transferring files back and forth from one platform to another.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Smartling extensively with one of my clients, managing as many as 20+ different projects at once. The dashboard interface makes it easy to have a general overview of production/productivy, as well as the progress of ongoing jobs.
I also like that you can have projects that are job-based as well as tag-based, so grouping multiple projects at once is easy and straightforward.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Smartling is a full feature localization platform that might suit the needs of any type of business of any size. My current client is a mid-zised social media company from the Silicon Valley, and my experience with Smartling managing all sorts of different projects of multiple complexities and different scopes is overall a positive one. As I said, sometimes it does try to do too much and it might be a little confusing regarding navigation, but it is a solid product, with a stellar customer support team.
