Very user-friendly CAT tool with state of the art features which is constantly improving.

What do you like best about the product?
I find the tool easy to navigate and I love the Github and the Zendesk integrations, which hugely help automating the localization process. I also like the multiple options to provide information to linguists: visual context, translator instructions, general context (files, etc.), project description, and how easy to view they are. The team has always been open to feedback and they're constantly working on improving features and adding new ones.
What do you dislike about the product?
While the tool has some really cool features, it lacks some basic ones, like giving access to specific areas of the tool to stakeholders on a case by case basis rather than having one size fits all permission levels. There are a few little things like that that could be improved. We've shared feedback with Smartling, so hopefully they'll be able to work on that and fine tune the tool.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling helps us handle translation requests from every department in the company mostly automatically. As we need to service new products/teams with different needs, our customer success manager, account manager and other members of the Smartling team have helped us accommodate all the new requirements.
We've also had some issues with the string-sharing feature that is active by default. Thankfully it's possible to disable it, but undoing its work is not easy. I believe this is something that should be discussed with the customer before they start using the tool.

What is Smartling?

What do you like best about the product?
Smartling is a web-based platform for document, website and app localization. It is much more than a simple CAT tool, as it also manages terminology, glossaries both on a project level as well as on a client level. In one single place you can also manage vendors (which Smartling call suppliers), and team members of all levels. It also makes it easy for clients to submit job requests and to deliver back finalized projects without the need of handling files via email or shared folders.
Their support team is also a plus - great people that know what they are doing and that know the localization industry pretty well. I have been working with Smartling for over 3 years now, and having their support team gives me a lot of peace of mind. I know they will be able to meet all our needs, no matter what.
What do you dislike about the product?
While Smartling tries to do a lot of everything, sometimes it might seem a little too cumbersome and bloated, feature-wise. Navigation can be confusing, and the way it manages financials is not really ideal. As of now our internal TMS does not have the proper connector to exchange financial information to and from Smartling, so we still need to resort to using spreadsheets and transferring files back and forth from one platform to another.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use Smartling extensively with one of my clients, managing as many as 20+ different projects at once. The dashboard interface makes it easy to have a general overview of production/productivy, as well as the progress of ongoing jobs.
I also like that you can have projects that are job-based as well as tag-based, so grouping multiple projects at once is easy and straightforward.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Smartling is a full feature localization platform that might suit the needs of any type of business of any size. My current client is a mid-zised social media company from the Silicon Valley, and my experience with Smartling managing all sorts of different projects of multiple complexities and different scopes is overall a positive one. As I said, sometimes it does try to do too much and it might be a little confusing regarding navigation, but it is a solid product, with a stellar customer support team.

What do you like best about the product?
I like most, that we have the option to verify the translations and changes we do during review of the delivered examples, by switching the source to the target language in the preview window. With this I will be able to see how it will look like later when finished.
What do you dislike about the product?
Overview of the new tasks in the Dashboard
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Sometimes the English source can have different meanings in German language. And we have very technical verbs that sometimes don´t need to be translated. With Smartling, I have a chance to optimise translations as a nativ speaker in in result deliver good Documents for our customers.

Best company for website translation/localization

  • June 01, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The platform is very robust and allows the organization and coordination needed to translate a large amount of content. More importantly, the service and support that we got from Smartling made the project seem uncomplicated and effortless. We are utilizing Smartling's Global Delivery Network (GDN). It allows us to keep our current workflow in place. The pages are written and managed in our custom CMS, then consumed into GDN, approved, and translated. That workflow allows us to communicate directly with the translators and any and all issues are resolved quickly. Once final approval is given, the pages show up as live translated pages on the GDN.
What do you dislike about the product?
The platform does have a small learning curve and if you want to learn more about the advanced features, you should rely on the service and support team.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As a destination that attracts many international visitors, it is extremely important to display our content in the appropriate native language. Smartling's platform and its translation options are the perfect fit. Utilizing Smartling's platform and services allows us to focus on developing content instead of the arduous task of translation and localization.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I highly recommend using Smartling's Global Delivery Network. It was the option that offered the least amount of setup and difficulty. Our initial translation was ingested into the GDN and translated in a short amount of time.

Easy-to-use CMS and CAT tool

  • June 01, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
- Smartling offers a variety of connectors that are relatively easy to set up
- The tool is well known among LSPs, so there's no long onboarding time to get started with translation work
- Dedicated CSM on the Enterprise plan
- Easy to use for project managers and requestors
- TM sharing across projects which helps to save costs
- Extensive reporting functionality
What do you dislike about the product?
- The job functionality can be a bit clumsy to navigate
- There's no easy way to automatically add visual context for app translation files
- I'd want more flexibility in the CAT tool, e.g. view two translated languages next to each other
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
At our company, we use Smartling as our centralized TMS. It enables us to leverage previously translated content across all projects, which is a great time- and cost-saver. We have all linguistic assets in one place and they are always accessible for the translators to use. This helps us to stay consistent with our brand voice and terminology.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I believe Smartling is suitable for both small companies just starting out with localization, but also bigger companies with mature localization processes. It's on the pricey side but definitely worth it.

Easy to use, love the preview context feature!

  • May 30, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Although I have been a translator for over a decade, I don't usually use CAT Tools -my work is mostly literary and very creative. However, a new client asked me to use Smartling and it really did surprise me as to how easy it was to use. I especially love the feature that shows you how the text will actually look like on the website/app screen, etc. Context is vital to translation, simply string to string is not enough - but not many CAT Tools provide that feature.
What do you dislike about the product?
When you click on submit, it shows several options to choose from before submitting. I think each option should be better explained, it's hard to tell the difference between them - I never know which one I should select. I also find a little bit unclear if, when I save strings, they are automatically saved as a memory for that term, and I would only like that to happen once I am certain of my translation (I like to take some time away from it before I submit, but I save the strings as I work on them so I don't risk losing work already done.
The option to drag windows to change their sizes could be better too... I often find they don't drag to look as large as I'd like to.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Consistency - being able to easily refer to a term to check how it has been translated before in order to maintain consistency.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
You don't have to install anything, it is fast and light on your browser. Seems to be very modern compared to other CAT Tools and a lot easier to use, as well as more intuitive.
