    Translation and Localization

User-friendly platform with flexible features

  • May 28, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Smartling's user interface is designed in a way that is very user-friendly. As a project manager, there are a lot of functions that help maintain translation quality, for example character limit, TM search, smart-matches, glossary terms. It also allows you to pull data from the tasks you are doing/have done for analysis. I think the best feature is the issues report, which list out the issues raised by the writers while they work on the tasks. You can applied filters to generate report and the issues are clearly shown so you can resolve each of them quickly.
What do you dislike about the product?
One issue we constantly face is when the client requires a specific character limit for each string and it cannot be reflected in the character count when the strings are actually tied together, this means that Smartling shows the total character count and limit of two strings and not separately.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling is a great tool for translation as it's easy to use so the writers don't need a lot of guidance to work through the tasks.

  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Love the CMS connector and Smartling's translation services. The CMS connector allows for easy submission and content retrieval across several languages. We're also extremely happy with the accuracy and efficiency of the translations from Smartling's Translation Services and appreciate the flexibility to onboard a preferred vendor if needed.
What do you dislike about the product?
It tends to take a long time to get help and/or a meeting scheduled with Smartling's technical team.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling allows Cloudera to truly have a global footprint through the localization of our website.

It's easy and convenient to get translations

  • May 27, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's easy and convenient to get translations and the user experience is quite nice.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometimes it's hard to put in request in terms of the length of the translation.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Problem: Getting translation
Benefits: Getting translation easy and fast. I'm a designer and I only use Smartling to translate some text copies and use them in my international ads, and so far Smartling has been helpful.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Look at some online reviews and tutorials first.

Smartling is a good all-in-one CAT tool with fewer problems than the competition

  • May 27, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Linguistic assets are included so no excuses (to not use glossary or style guide)
Easy to use for localisation managers, translators, and requesters alike
What do you dislike about the product?
The tool is not always intuitive, especially when it comes to navigating advanced settings, which can cause problems for requesters
Some product changes are problematic and it's questionable if they should be rolled out automatically (uploading docs as MS Excel vs Smartling Excel is very confusing)
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Good all-in-one tool
Inclusion of glossary and styleguide is a boon
Easy to navigate and use for all parties
No need for freelancers to purchase a CAT tool or download files
Very easy to add new users, and now we can customise access more
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Smartling is one of the best tools out there, especially for translators (no need to purchase a CAT tool or to download files).
It is for the most part easy to learn and use, and it is also easy to upload and download files.
In 2 years working with Smartling, I've seen many product improvements, but new features should be discussed with us instead of bein implemented automatically.

Great translation platform with flexible workflows to handle any localization task.

  • May 26, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's as hands on or as hands off as you need it to be.
What do you dislike about the product?
It does what I need it to do, not a lot to dislike about it. Small learning curve, but the account team has been great to work with and help in any capacity.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Lots of content, but not a lot of internal resources with which to help localize. Smartling helped streamline the process.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you need an easy-to-learn and easy-to-use localization platform, smartling offers a great solution.

It is well integrated with our prod teams and we can have fast SLA to support pur product locally.
What do you dislike about the product?
For marketing, it's not the ideal tool --- too cumbersome and hard to upload big decks.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Made us fast in supporting international product.

Smartling with Contentful Connector

  • May 26, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The Customer Sucess Teams at Smartling are fantastic. They are always willing to help and provide guidance on how to use the SMartling platform. Kudos to Kyle Robb who has been patient, Connor Katz to getting me up to speed 8 months ago and Frank Salituro who makes adding additional projects a breeze.
As for the platform, once you have all the pieces in place and can start leveraging translation memory, it's a very helpful tool for localization.
What do you dislike about the product?
Smartling as a platform is difficult to get started with because the interface is confusing. It would be helpful if there were more tooltips to help you along. I can't speak to other integrations but we use Contentful and it adds another layer of complexing.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Attempting to get versions of our site in as many languages to serve multiple locales. Once you have translation memory established I believe it can make the translation process more streamlined but we are simply not there yet.

Expensive, missing features

  • May 24, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Reasonably intuitive UI, good knowledge base.
What do you dislike about the product?
It's the most expensive platform on the market yet under delivers on performance. Many industry standard features are missing and very limited configurations available. It may be ok if you can use it as is out-of-the-box, but venture away from their standard use cases and you're in trouble.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Software and website translation, automation. No benefits above the standard benefits of any TMS platform.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you're starting out in localization and have a huge budget, as a first TMS, you'll probably be fine with Smartling. If you're after a robust platform for a mature localization program, I would look elsewhere.

Robust Localization CMS & CAT tool

  • May 22, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Smartling platform allows a lot of flexibility with various existing and customizable connectors via API. In-context translation allows better translation quality and support for the linguists. Smartling team is always willing to go above and beyond to customize their setup and project tracking through extensive platform features. Love the variety of data and reports, easy to pull and understand.
What do you dislike about the product?
Would love to see more design connectors and issue color coding to separate them by the type.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Our company is using Smartling for UI localization through the custom integration with our internal CMS. Also, we translate a lot of marketing, editorial, and customer support content via Smartling. The benefit of in-context translation is huge and allows us to improve the timing on the internal LQA process. Also, having all linguistic assets in one places help our cross-functional teams to stay aligned on the terminology and voice of the company across different markets.

Localizing Across iOS & Android Concurrently

  • May 22, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Smartling makes it easy to host a database of strings, have them be translated by third parties, and integrate them into your project.
What do you dislike about the product?
Strings cannot be shared cross platform without custom integration. For iOS & Android, the format for localized strings differ, which requires separate files. It would nice to be able to combine strings between both platforms.

Following up on translation issues filed by translators is a very confusing workflow that typically gets screwed up when attempting to coordinate other engineers to respond to issues. When addressing an issue, commenting on the issue will not cause the issue to go back into the translators queue, thus them not seeing the comment. It requires the engineer to reject the translation, a process that cannot be done from the issue view. You must navigate to the string in the string viewer to reject the translation.

Words being related to jobs is not clear. For the project I work in, we have over 30,000 words that are not in jobs. It's not very clear how words relate to a job and the jobs purpose. This is difficult to explain to new people when onboarding.

Another issue we've had is strings being stuck In Progress for months if not years. Over time, if an engineer does not respond to a string, for example by leaving the company or forgetting, strings can be stuck In Progress and never moved to the published state. It would be nice to have a way to know when strings become stale in a state.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Smartling allows us to easily store all of our strings in a central database. Without Smartling we would need to use a spreadsheet.

A significant benefit of using Smartling is having historical data of string changes. Something not easily doable in a spreadsheet.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Evaluate what your situation is, how your projects are setup and teams organized. Smartling is very powerful when you have a resource that is responsible for monitoring strings in Smartling, but fails to offer solutions to help integrate with engineer workflows.
