I used Metabase for business intelligence and analytics in my organization. We connected Metabase to AWS Athena, allowing us to query and visualize data stored in S3 buckets.

Metabase has been a game-changer for our teams and customers
Simple Yet Powerful Open-Source BI Tool for Fast Data Exploration
It supports custom SQL queries when needed and provides automatic visualizations, which makes dashboard building incredibly efficient. The scheduling and sharing capabilities (via email and Slack) are a huge plus for recurring reports. And being open-source, it’s cost-effective for small teams or startups with limited budgets.
Additionally, performance tends to degrade when dealing with very large datasets or high query volumes. Customizing visuals is also somewhat limited—you don’t get the same depth of control over chart formatting. Lastly, the documentation and community support could be more robust for solving advanced use cases.
We use Metabase to monitor KPIs like user retention, sales trends, and product performance. The ability to create dashboards and set up scheduled reports has significantly improved reporting efficiency and transparency. By embedding dashboards into our internal admin panel, we’ve also centralized data access, saving time and improving team alignment.
Great but only if you're good at understanding analytics
Empowering Enterprise Users with Easy-to-Use and Open-Source Analytics
Modern analytics tool enhances user interactions with neat visualizations for improved decision-making
What is our primary use case?
How has it helped my organization?
Metabase, being deployed on AWS, enabled us to work closely with our data in AWS. It allowed for real-time updates and queries after our ETL jobs, which greatly enhanced our ability to make timely and data-driven decisions.
What is most valuable?
Metabase's key advantage is its modern approach to business intelligence. It offers neat and interactive visualizations and a light and user-friendly interface.
The use of a Docker image allowed us to deploy it easily on AWS, and its open-source edition was functional enough for our needs. The solution provided frequent updates and customer support through their blogs and forums.
What needs improvement?
One area for improvement could be in offering more advanced features even in the open-source edition or making the paid versions more cost-effective.
Data scalability, especially if the data grows, requires manual infrastructure management, which could be improved. Increased customization and visualization options in the open-source edition would be beneficial.
Additionally, it might be helpful if more complex queries and stored procedures were supported.
For how long have I used the solution?
I used Metabase for approximately eight months.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Metabase proved to be stable in our usage. The Docker image frequently received updates, which helped maintain its stability and address any bugs.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
The scalability of Metabase depended largely on the EC2 instance and AWS infrastructure we used. Managing the scalability required manual adjustments based on our data volume, including upgrading the instance type as needed.
How are customer service and support?
Metabase provided frequent updates and had a robust support system through blogs and articles, although I did not personally engage with direct technical support.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Positive
How was the initial setup?
The initial setup was manageable. We deployed the Docker image using AWS EC2, which required us to manage the infrastructure manually to accommodate the growth of data.
What was our ROI?
The return on investment was mainly seen in its functionality. The open-source edition provided sufficient utility for deploying in AWS and utilizing AWS data warehouses cost-effectively.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Using the open-source edition of Metabase on AWS EC2 cost us around $29 per month for the EC2 instance, which was affordable.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
I compared Metabase with QuickSight to evaluate which tool would best meet our business needs, stakeholder management, and technical capabilities.
What other advice do I have?
Metabase is a modern BI tool that offers light and user-friendly interactions, making it well-suited for modern data environments.
I'd rate the solution eight out of ten.

Useful for visualization and data analytics
What is our primary use case?
I use the solution in my company for visualization and data analytics.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable feature of the solution is its interface, which is used to query data into Metabase. I think it is very useful and handy for a novice.
What needs improvement?
I think there is a need to add a few more advanced visuals in the tool. There are a standard set of visuals in the tool which are available. We need more advanced visuals in the product. Metabase's competitors of the product are making available a lot of new visuals in their solutions.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Metabase for a year and a half. I am a user of the tool.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
It is a scalable solution.
All the reports generated through the product are accessible throughout my organization. All the teams in my company, like the product, business, customer engagement, or marketing, use the dashboard offered by the product, and there are more users in my company who access the reports offered by the product. There are 20 people in the company who develop reports using the product.
Metabase's scalability and performance have met my organization's growing data needs.
How are customer service and support?
I have contacted the technical support for the product, and I can say that they were responsive.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
My company used to use Power BI.
How was the initial setup?
The product's installation and deployment phases were pretty easy. Metabase's team was really helpful in setting up the tool in our environment on AWS and guiding us through the initial setup and everything.
The solution is deployed using AWS cloud services.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I would not say it is a cheap tool, but it's viable.
The tool can be worth your money.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
Besides the other products in the market, my company decided to go with Metabase since we were using several SQL and NoSQL databases. Power BI was not able to handle NoSQL databases, which mostly focused on our company's product end. In a way, with the NoSQL database, we need to know the user performance and everything related to it. We thought that integrating a new tool would help us. Metabase is a cloud-hosted tool and is data-driven, so it gives us access from anywhere, unlike the on-premises version. The basic operations that we do on Metabase are mostly SQL-driven, which is basic for every developer.
My company had a study and report done by a peer source, and they also helped with onboarding the product.
What other advice do I have?
I would definitely recommend Metabase to others.
The tool is easy to learn if you are good at querying an SQL database.
One of my teams uses Metabase for AI development.
I rate the tool an eight or nine out of ten.
