Shockingly poor product that should leave everyone involved ashamed
What do you like best about the product?
It is good at making things look pretty, sometimes
What do you dislike about the product?
Literally every other part of its use. I purchased Tableau Cloud for my organisation of 50 people and will tell any peer or colleague in the industry to avoid it at all costs.
Here are a selection of the issues I deal with every day:
* I get logged out every few hours. I understand that this is a security feature, but there is no ability to change the logout duration.
* Permissions for each piece of content are completely byzantine... good luck every figuring out why someone can't access a report (or why one chart in a report isn't working for them).
* The data model and layout of data sources is completely nonsensical and impossible to use. Any time a change is made in an upstream report, get to make the same change in nine different places, and even then sometimes for it not to work. There is no robustness here. Has nobody at Tableau thought of what the actual day-to-day process of using a BI tool involve?
* Everything is slooooooooooooow, I wait and wait and wait for pages to load. Using the Data Flow is painfully slow – any change requires a wait of 30 seconds before the UI is usable again. And because caching has clearly been wrongly implemented, I frequently make a change in the application, navigate to another part of the site, and find that change has yet to propagate.
* Error messages are totally opaque. Something will break, and there will be absolutely no way for you to identify what the root cause is.
* It feels like none of the components of the system are actually integrated with one another. For example, if you set up a Data Flow to write an output file, then move that file, the Data Flow will continue writing to the old location, meaning any reports that were downstream of the original file just silently fail to show any updated data.
* The UI is horribly inconsistent and smacks of "four different product squads are working on this same page" – there are always multiple different ways to do things, each of which brings some subtlety or unintended consequence.
* There are a number of advertisements for irrelevant or paid features that you cannot hide. This is despite paying many thousands of dollars a year for licenses.
* Integrations with more sophisticated analytics environments are absymal. The Snowflake connector still does not support key-pair authentication, and there is no ability to actually store credentials in Tableau Cloud.
* There is no ability to automatically schedule a report to be posted in Slack... despite the fact that Salesforce owns both Slack and Tableau!
How is it possible that a >$1B company that has now been acquired by a >$100B can produce such an embarrassingly poor piece of software? I will never understand. Do not, under any circumstances, purchase this if you want to have any luck with "democratising data" or "driving analytics" at your organisation.
