Solid reliable and highly configurable product

  • November 05, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Bacula Enterprise is a an excellent system. It ishighly configurable, does exactly what you ask of it, and importantly for me, it works in the way you would expect. I like systems where I can think to myself, how would that work best, and then I find out that Bacula does it that way.

The support has always been extremely helpful. We don’t need it often, but when we do, again, we get just the right answers to walk us through the tricky things.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is no native way to deal with zfs send / receive streams. It can be handled with scripts, which is what we do, and if the system supports it (our current one does not) then NDMP would be an option.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Bacula looks after close to 0.5 PB of our data sending it to tape on a regular basis. These are, for the most part, things which we simply cannot lose. We can do without them for a bit, but they must not be lost. With Bacula we have full confidence that our data is safe.

Amazing Centralized Data Backup System

  • November 05, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Incredible flexibility! It's a modular, easily scalable architecture with a clear division of functionality, data and interaction with the system.
Once set up, you can forget and not touch. The system will work like a charm. Simple and straightforward backup and restore procedure. You can easily make backups of anything: servers, clusters, databases, user data. And all this will be centrally controlled. Wow!

The support team are awsome! For example, when we found out that we did not have an installation file for old FreeBSD systems - we asked the Bacula development team about it. And practically in a few days they made an installer for us.
BWeb Management Suite helps to do you daily deals, saves your time and simplifies the use of the backup system - intuitive and easy to use.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not easy entry threshold for beginners.
Despite the many free additional plugins, there are still many paid ones (Bare-metal recovery, Oracle Database plugin, MS VSS and other).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Centralized control and management of backup of the entire system in distributed systems of any complexity.
The ability to execute scripts during the backup process.
Work on mixed systems - UNIX-like, Linux, and Windows.
Working with multiple tape storage devices.
Encryption of network traffic as well as backup data.
Automation and unification of backup and recovery processes for information stored in information systems.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is fair to say that not every product has all of these features!
It is also fair to say that a separate employee is needed to fully customize and implement all amazing Bacula functionality.

Extremely impressive support staff.

  • November 04, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Bacula has been around for more than 20 years, and its developers therefore have encountered - and dealt with - every conceivable edge case, from weird filesystems and hardware to the most specific business requirements and schedules. They've solved problems most competitors don't even know exist.

Their support staff is hypercompetent -- everyone I have worked with is a deep subject matter expert and if they didn't write the actual code, they know who did - and can talk to them immediately. They never "just try to close the ticket' - they spend as much time and effort as it takes to actually solve not just the problem you state, but really think about what you're asking and realize if it's an "XY problem" and address the REAL problem.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only thing I dislike is that Bacula is a bit behind the times in terms of how it stores backups. It still behaves as if everything is a tape - disk-based backups simply pretend that your disk is a bunch of tapes, and (on some operating systems) doesn't always use modern features like snapshots or make full use of deduplication to avoid making many copies of identical data.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We back up ~50 clients and ~1.5 PB to a mix of disk and LTO7 tape. Paying for Bacula Enterprise - rather than using the free open source version - gets us support which has several times been invaluable and easily paid for itself in terms of productivity and not-lost-data.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Bacula is not the easiest backup software to work with - you are expected to be competent at the command line and editing complex configuration files, even if you mostly use the web GUI for day to day operations. However, study is rewarded - you can do many very complex things. Easy things may not always be easy, but very hard things are POSSIBLE - unlike many competitors that make easy things easy and hard things impossible.

Flexible and Powerful

  • November 04, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Flexibility, it can backup almost anything you throw at it.
What do you dislike about the product?
Sometime can be very complex to configure when used a bit differently than the default installation.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Efficient backups i can forget is running. Solves encrypting the backup itself pretty easily.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The learning curve is very steep.

Very Good Backup Solution With Excellent Support

  • October 02, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It support a big variety of systems.
It works better from any other backup solution that i have tried with Netapp nfs shares.
Bacula support team it respond very quick.
On our case they customized a plugin in a very reasonable time.
The support help me quick with every questions i have.
What do you dislike about the product?
You need a long of time to learn and understand the Bacula system even there is a lot of documentation.
It is a system that support a variety of products and you need a lot of time to learn and customize the backups. ( support help me a lot with that).
They need to work more with Bweb in our case with a huge amount of files we must use bconsole for files recovery.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Bacula works well with a very big nfs share with the hfc plugin we can take incremental backups very quick.
We have tried a lot of backup solution and Bacula was the only solution that take our incremental backups in a very good amount of time.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It a very good Backup Solution

Bacula Administration Course 1 - Online Training

  • July 03, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I enjoyed this online learning because it was extremely flexible. We got enough breaks in between and time to ask questions during the training.

The best part of this training was the .ova files that were produced and shared by Bacula Training Team with all the needed packages/configurations etc. That then went well with the slides being taught.

I like the concept of Bacula Slides and Manuals being sent out with other goodies. The manual had lots real case study scenarios as well. I always like to hold on to something physical at the end of training as it helps marking important sections and taking notes.
What do you dislike about the product?
It is difficult to get to know people on line rather than in person. I think we will get used to it with more online training classes been made available; however it won't be such a big deal later.

Sometimes its too much work, not enough time to do it all with your BAU work as well after your training ends. If there are immediate work related tickets/emails to respond then it becomes hard managing time.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Bacula is making possible to backup our clients without any client software by using NFS or Samba etc and it can handle multi volume backups.

We have realized that Bacula's design is scalable. Its BWEB has many good new features.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Depending on the licensing and usage, one should really test out Bacula Enterprise.

Widely customisable and excellent support

  • June 30, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It is widely customisable. Even if there is no feature available for a particular need, it is possible workaround using scripts. This opens the range of options mainly for environments full of complex requirements.

The technical support are always available to help you without questioning whether what is happening is really a problem or not. They consider all suggestions. They point out to the correct document when it is needed.

As an Open Source system, there are plenty of information on internet. Also, many forums with people available to help.
What do you dislike about the product?
Learning curve. It is necessary long time (weeks) studying and testing as much as you can to get a good understanding of the system. The course helps, but the person needs to work hard too.

When you are not comfortable with the system, is hard to find the proper documentation.

BWEB could use the normal config files instead of change the folders and files structure. It becomes harder to cross check configurations files with web options.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I am backing up three Netapp clusters.
One is 2.5PB and other two around 50TB each

It helps to have a backup in another place.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
It is one of the best cost benefits in the market. If not the best.

You have an repository available with all packages necessary to install and maintain the system. Also there are documentation for specific use cases.

Their support team is really helpful.

Bacula Enterprise: our choice of backup solution

  • June 01, 2020
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Bacula Enterprise offers much more functionality, in addition to a centralized management platform. For large corporations that have more than one virtualization host, it is essential to have a robust tool that has no limitations. Thus, it brings all the functionalities and its use is not impossible in any situation.
What do you dislike about the product?
Nothing to complain about this solution.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
With Bacula Enterprise we can manage the backups of all our servers in an easy and secure way. It made the institution's backup routines much easier.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Complete backup and restore tool. I use and recommend it for small, medium and large institutions.

The tooling is very good. Bacula enterprise is very easy to ingrate with other systems, we managed to integrate with Active Diretory and SQL Server with no friction.
What do you dislike about the product?
The web interface (Bweb) could be more polished.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Bacula enterprise allows up to do bare-metal and SQL Server backups of local and remote sites. Due to its distributed architecture we have te capability to configure schedules, backup consolidation, de-duplication, retention policies and everything else for all the fleet in only on place.
