A great data cataloging capability for data driven enterprises
What do you like best about the product?
Having a data catalogue is essential for any data driven business to succeed, in the appropriate way, and scale correctly without incurring tech debt or creating siloes. Alation allows this is an efficient way that speaks to both technical and business stakeholders.
What do you dislike about the product?
Alation in our experience has occasionally struggled to scale at the pace that we often require it. The UI can sometimes be difficult to use for more inexperienced individuals.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Contextual information is embedded alongside the data, and being able to link together business process documentation, terminology definitions and data together in one place is very useful for our stakeholders.
Alation is the go-to data catalogue for fast-to-insights governance
What do you like best about the product?
Firstly, the Alation team are very customer centric. Regular, consistently useful comms, on point, every time. The product is very easy to deploy in AWS, and connecting to our DW and reporting systems has been mostly a doddle. We've had a few issues in connecting to Kafka, but that has been because of our setup.
The product is really intuitive to use, and quickly highlights gaps in current processes around documenting data sources within a DW environment. The fact that it can pull lineage from warehouses is really useful for impact analysis.

What do you dislike about the product?
I think there is a gap within the specific Power BI connector, in that I'm sure there is more metadata behind the scenes that Alation can tap into, but doesnt. For example, where people are creating reports in Power BI, making use of calculations and functions, it'd be super handy to be able to identify these, and compare for duplications across the org. Otherwise, there isnt much to complain about!
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Alation is underpinning our business and technology strategies, and is enabling a more digital way of working. It helps us identify what we have, what condition its in, who's best to talk to as a SME, and federated governance across teams.

Solving relational database sql queries in Alation allowing the user the easily write sql and share results.

No Longer Stuck on an Island
What do you like best about the product?
Once upon a time, when we used to work at the office, I worked at a satellite campus with no peers. I envied the analyst groups that all sat in pods, and they constantly helped each other and trained newbies. Leaning over and asking a question feels very different than phoning or IMing colleagues multiple times a day, but the truth is when you are new, you really need tons of help. I use Alation almost every day, and it answers both simple questions, like "what does AT43 mean?" to more complex questions, "Which table do other analysts go to as "the" source of truth? How would I join that to my data?" Alation puts tons of tribal knowledge at your fingertips and saves you from wild-goose-chases and mistakes.
What do you dislike about the product?
One of the only downsides I can think of is that long-term analysts don't always have buy-in. They think they know their area and their data. Some don't see the value of adding their queries to Alation to help others. To mitigate this, I often add their queries myself (say if they emailed me something), so others can refer to them, and I can easily search for them again in the future.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I do tons of COVID reporting, and the questions never stop pouring in. Alation helps me to write code faster (because I am not having to ask multiple people for help) , so it has been instrumental in me keeping up with the demands of my job.
A wiki and Yelp 2-in-1 tool tailor made for data analytics
What do you like best about the product?
Link to database to get the most up-to-date schemas
Scan database SQL logs to get the table/column usages
Allow crowd-sourcing for metadata input so everyone can provide input (like wiki)
Provide advanced tagging to link articles, email conversations to actual tables and columns
Allow Yelp-like rating for tables and columns so other users can use the best tables and avoid obsolete and misleading ones.
Very rich and well documented API to support expansion, automation, integration with 3rd party tools. So when some features like data profiling, data quality, data lineage are not what you are looking for, you can always code in python to push custom content to Alation.
Also they have very-well run training, webinar, online forum team to help grow the community.

What do you dislike about the product?
depending on the deployment, it could become costly.
the Conversation feature could be enhanced to become a more full fledged a forum so that people can ask questions in a traditional way. Also it will be neat to be able to send out daily digests, or of user's choice on frequency.
