Great cataloging & governance product

How was the initial setup?
Alation Data Catalog's deployment is easy. I rate it a nine out of ten. Deployment takes only two to three hours to complete. One to two resources are enough to handle the deployment.

I rate Alation Data Catalog an eight out of ten.

What do you like best about the product?
What is most helpful about it is how simple it is to add policies and terms to the catalog. Combining this with easy data dictionary upload helps data stewards and SMEs effectively memorialize metadata to the data marketplace.
What do you dislike about the product?
The cost per data steward is a bit high is one thing. Another thing is having to pay to enable column level data linieage. Sure you can get by with just table level, but column level lineage is key for impact analysis.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Alation's data catalog is helping improve data literacy via it's layout. Users better understand that information exists about the data they care about because this metadata is now exposed to them in the data catalog. In addition to data literacy, it helps users make confident choices in the datasets they consume because they can now see not only who else uses the data but also queries that have been shared for others to use. This benefits the company because it cuts down on duplication of effort but also helps create a standard process.

We can easily integrate it with other applications, and simple to configure. Multiple members can comment. Easy to capture the data lineage.
What do you dislike about the product?
No significant dislikes after 2-3 months of usage.

We mainly used alation to understand the Data Lineage and for data governance purpose.
A stable data catalog solution that helps onboard data sources
What is our primary use case?
We've recently onboarded the Power BI reports, and the inbuilt connector had an issue wherein it was not scanning the custom pages of Power BI. There's a mandate in our organization that details of the report will be on one of the custom pages. So we onboarded the custom page as well, and we have successfully achieved the task.
What is most valuable?
The most valuable features of Alation Data Catalog are the simplicity in onboarding data sources, the security in securing the data sources, and the way the various users of Alation Data Catalog communicate with each other through a messenger.
What needs improvement?
Alation Data Catalog cannot scan the custom pages of Power BI. Having the capability to scan the custom pages of Power BI would be a great feature in Alation Data Catalog. Alation Data Catalog does not provide end-to-end data lineage. It cannot provide a data lineage where the data is going from one data source to another. Alation Data Catalog currently lacks these features.

I have been working with Alation Data Catalog for three years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Alation Data Catalog is a stable solution.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Scaling up was not easy in the earlier versions of the solution, and it used to crash. However, with the new updates provided by Alation Data Catalog, it is easy to scale up.
As an application support team or application admin team, we are two people using Alation Data Catalog in our organization.
How are customer service and support?
I have been working with Alation Data Catalog's technical support for many years, and I've had a very good experience working with them. They are very proactive and respond to you on time.
How was the initial setup?
Alation Data Catalog's initial setup was pretty easy. The solution provides a detailed step-by-step approach to implement and build the solution. The solution is deployed on cloud.
What about the implementation team?
Alation Data Catalog's basic features and software took around 12 to 13 days to deploy. We were able to onboard a few of the data sources within the next four to five days. In approximately 20 days, we were able to implement and deploy the solution; and onboard around 10 data sources.
What other advice do I have?
I'm working with the latest version of Alation Data Catalog.
I have seen many tools, and Alation Data Catalog is far better than other data catalog solutions.
I recommend every user go through the Alation Data Catalog courses. They have very well-defined videos explaining all the features of Alation Data Catalog.
I won't say that Purview has more features than Alation Data Catalog, but customers tend to go for Purview if their platform is on Azure Cloud. Purview won't be expensive if you already have an Azure membership.
Overall, I rate Alation Data Catalog an eight out of ten.

Enterprise Data Cataloging Made Easy
What do you like best about the product?
It's just stunning how easy it's been to stand up Alation, get it customized, get data sources connected and get people interested in using it. I love the interface and the intuitiveness of it and our programmers have been working with the APIs, working from Alation recipes that get us most of the way there out of the box.
What do you dislike about the product?
We've found no down sides of Alation - the experience has been positive for us in every aspect, from implementation to curation. Some features that we would like are still in development, but we knew that going in and Alation has been open about what's coming and when we can expect it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Alation is making data governance straightforward and organized across many teams and many stakeholders. Regulatory compliance and practical daily data use is made much easier by a central tool that's accessible to all of those stakeholders.

Ease of Use. Caters for a customised user requirement implementation. Good product support.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not historically focused on UK Public Sector and unawareness of the culture challenges coupled with disparate source system landscape to implementing a Metadata Catalog Tool.

Lack of awareness on what data is available in the organisation, who owns it, who manages it, repeated data discovery exercises for the same data, lack of metadata accuracy, lack of organisational business glossary and management thereof

1) The pricing model is complex and could be improved. For instance, Alation should remove the limit of read-only users. It should also encourage the use of additional connectors. These features will only help to ensure quality implementations used across the enterprise.

Alation is an amazing data catalogue tool.
What do you like best about the product?
The thing that appeals to me most about Alation is that it is a user-friendly tool with superior data catalog capabilities. It is also very cost effective. Additionally, Alation by far has the smartest sales and professional development teams.
What do you dislike about the product?
The only issue that I have with Alation is that I wish they had a fully integrated Data Quality tool.

We needed a data catalog/business glossary tool to support the implementation of our Data Catalog tool.
