NTT Docomo, NEC achieve energy-efficiency gains running 5GC software on AWS Graviton2
Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) are coming to the forefront of leaders minds in the Telecommunications Vertical
ESG and net-zero mandates have become common place in most of the Global Fortune 2000. The shifting macroeconomic and geopolitical landscape are introducing volatility and disruption into energy prices increasing all organizations operating expenses. According to GSMA Intelligence, energy consumption accounted for between 15% and 40% of Communications Services Providers (CSPs) operating expenditure (opex) in 2021, a figure that is expected to increase in the next few years1.
AWS, NTT Docomo, and NEC recently conducted a POC aimed at reducing energy consumption of 5G networks.
In following report, 451 Research’s Brian Partridge dives deeper into how NTT Docomo/NEC were able to unlock a power consumption savings of ~72% by utilizing AWS’s in house Silicon processor, Graviton 2, lifting and shifting NEC’s 5G Core software on to AWS Infrastructure.
