Adaptive Recognition Extends the Reach of Smart Traffic Systems Using AWS

2020

By migrating its automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) software to the AWS Cloud and delivering it as a service, Adaptive Recognition has increased speed of deployment by 3−4x. The Hungary-based firm develops and manufactures intelligent software and imaging devices. It uses Amazon ECS to run its ANPR application using microservices.

Enhanced Traffic Management

Adaptive Recognition (AR), headquartered in Budapest, develops automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) software based on artificial intelligence (AI). The technology supports parking, traffic safety, access control, and smart city projects in Europe, the Middle East, and South America, helping authorities improve traffic management.

The Expense of On-Premises Solutions

Owing to the complexity of integrating AR’s ANPR systems with customers’ traffic management infrastructures, system integrators could spend months on the work. To simplify the integration process, AR wanted to build an ANPR software as a service (SaaS) solution with integration via APIs. It turned to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Cloud Migration Lowers Costs

In less than 20 days, AR built an environment on AWS to run the ANPR system’s image processing application.“By migrating our ANPR solution to AWS, we reduced our costs because we no longer had to invest in hardware,” says Tibor Zahorecz, head of cloud business branch at AR.

To make the application easier to maintain and scale, the IT team used microservices, running in Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS), a fully managed container orchestration service.

Deployment 3–4 Times Faster

With its SaaS offering running on AWS, AR has transformed its capability to serve customers and their smart city projects. Implementation is now 3–4 times faster, so customers can have their projects up and running in weeks.

Furthermore, because of the global AWS infrastructure, AR can deploy its product anywhere in the world, allowing it to expand into new markets such as the United States.

About Adaptive Recognition

Adaptive Recognition develops and manufactures intelligent software and imaging devices for multiple solutions, including license plate recognition and document scanning.

Benefits of AWS

  • Increases speed of deployment by 3–4x
  • Reduces IT costs
  • Makes it simpler to maintain and scale image processing application
  • Lowers container management time to focus on software development
  • Supports global expansion

AWS Services Used

Amazon Elastic Container Service

Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) is a fully managed container orchestration service. Customers such as Duolingo, Samsung, GE, and Cookpad use ECS to run their most sensitive and mission critical applications because of its security, reliability, and scalability.
