Health Companies Transforming and Personalizing Patient Care Using AWS
2022
Industry Challenge
Lita Sands, head of global life sciences business development for Amazon Web Services (AWS), was joined by a panel of three leaders from pharmaceutical companies (Roche, Novo Nordisk, and Bristol Myers Squibb) that are approaching personalized healthcare with transformative digital solutions. The increased use of telemedicine and the growth of digital health engagement have led pharma leaders to leverage digital platforms to support patients’ individual needs.
The Companies’ Solutions
Until recently, the focus of pharmaceutical companies was getting medicines into the hands of patients. The growth of technology and increased digital engagement from patients present a new opportunity to enhance what medicines can do by integrating patient support and guidance into pharmaceutical and digital health offerings. Companies can drive better outcomes and therapy adherence in a personalized way using patients’ data rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. Panelists discussed how health information technology company Cerner used Amazon SageMaker, a comprehensive machine learning service, to create a tool that predicts patients’ advancement to congestive heart failure up to 15 months in advance using individual patient data.
Leveraging data and applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to understand how to help patients is a huge part of how we’re bringing benefits to both patients and healthcare professionals.”

About this panel
This panel featured Julia Häring, head of digital health commercial, Novo Nordisk;
Shwen Gwee, VP and head of global digital Sstrategy, Bristol Myers Squibb; and Davidek Herron, global head of digital, Roche.
Benefits of AWS
The culture of innovation at AWS is well suited to meet these novel demands. The panel noted that AWS works backwards from the problem at hand to develop an advanced tech solution without losing focus on the needs of the customer. Health companies are ready to invest in products outside of their space, and AWS provides consistent support and a full portfolio of solutions to meet the needs of producing new digital tools.
