Amazon FSx for Windows File Server announces a hard disk drive (HDD) storage option that provides highly available and durable file storage at a price of 1.3 cents per GB-month (in the US-East, N. Virginia Region). For customers who require file systems that span multiple Availability Zones, HDD storage is available at 2.5 cents per GB-month. Combined with Amazon FSx’s support for data deduplication, you can achieve an effective cost of less than 1 cent per GB-month.

The new HDD storage type is designed for a broad spectrum of workloads, including home directories, user and departmental shares, and content management systems. This HDD storage type complements the existing Solid State Drive (SSD) storage type that is designed for the highest-performance and most latency-sensitive workloads.

Amazon FSx for Windows File Server provides simple, fully managed, highly reliable file storage that’s accessible over the industry-standard Server Message Block (SMB) protocol. It’s built on Windows Server, providing full SMB support and a wide range of administrative features like user quotas, data deduplication, and end-user file restore. It offers single-AZ and multi-AZ deployment options, fully managed backups, and encryption of data at rest and in transit. To support Windows-based environments and enterprises, it integrates with Microsoft Active Directory (AD). Amazon FSx file storage is accessible from Windows, Linux, and MacOS compute instances and devices running in AWS or on-premises.

HDD storage is available today in all regions where Amazon FSx is available. Learn more about Amazon FSx for Windows File Server in our AWS News blog, and for more information about this new feature, see the storage types documentation.
