Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) Cross-Region Automated Backups feature is now available in the AWS Regions: US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (N. California), US West (Oregon), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), Asia Pacific (Seoul), Asia Pacific (Osaka), Asia Pacific (Mumbai), Asia Pacific (Singapore), Asia Pacific (Sydney), Canada (Central), EU (Frankfurt), EU (Stockholm), EU (Ireland), EU (London), EU (Paris), South America (Sao Paulo), AWS GovCloud (US-West) and AWS GovCloud (US-East).

This feature extends the existing RDS backup functionality, giving you the ability to set up automatic replication of system snapshots and transaction logs from a primary AWS Region to a secondary AWS Region. For Amazon RDS for Oracle and Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL, these backups are encrypted using an AWS KMS customer master key in the destination Region. Currently, the encrypted backups are not supported for Amazon RDS for SQL Server.

The Amazon RDS Cross-Region Automated Backups feature enables disaster recovery capability for mission-critical databases by providing you the ability to restore your database to a specific point in time within your backup retention period. This allows you to quickly resume operations in the event that the primary AWS Region becomes unavailable.

Amazon RDS for Oracle supports this feature for versions 12.1 (starting from 12.1.0.2.v10) and higher for customers who use any Edition of Oracle Database with the License Included or Bring Your Own License models. Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL supports it for versions 9.6 and higher. And, Amazon RDS for SQL Server supports this feature for SQL Server 2014 and later, for all available Editions (Express, Web, Standard, Enterprise).

Pricing is comprised of the storage for snapshots and the data transfer of the snapshots and the transaction logs. Data transfer between the primary AWS Region to a secondary AWS Region is billed based on the data transfer rates of the applicable AWS Regions. See Amazon RDS for Oracle Pricing, Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL Pricing and Amazon RDS for SQL Server Pricing for up-to-date pricing of instances, storage, data transfer, and regional availability for each of these engines.

Amazon RDS makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale a relational database on AWS. To learn more about Amazon RDS Cross-Region Automated Backups and the supported destination regions, visit the documentation page and the blog post.
