Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) Custom for Oracle, a managed database service for legacy, custom, and packaged applications that require access to the underlying operating system and database environment, now supports the Oracle Multitenant option on Oracle Database (DB) version 19c using Enterprise Edition. With this release, the Amazon RDS Custom for Oracle DB instance can operate as a multitenant container database (CDB) hosting one or more pluggable databases (PDBs). A PDB is a set of schemas, schema objects, and non-schema objects that logically appears to a client as a non-CDB.
With support for Oracle Multitenant, you can now run Oracle E-Business Suite versions 12.1 and 12.2 on an Amazon RDS Custom 19c DB instance in a single PDB. Inside the CDB, you also have the option to consolidate standalone databases by either creating them as PDBs or migrating them to PDBs. The Oracle policy on PDB licenses states that “Oracle Database 19c now supports up to 3 pluggable databases (PDBs) per container database (CDB) without requiring additional multitenant license.” You should consult with your own legal team to determine if the above suits your use case.
To create a multitenant Amazon RDS Custom for Oracle DB instance, you start by building a custom engine version (CEV) by supplying your own 19c database installation media files and selecting multitenant in AWS Management Console, or specifying custom-oracle-ee-cdb engine version in the AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI).
