Overview
Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for AWS is an AWS well-architected vaulting solution for protecting a copy of critical data from ransomware and cyberattacks. For rapid deployments with flexible recovery options, PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for AWS provides a data center environment isolated from corporate or backup networks and managed separately through restricted access clearance.
PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for AWS moves critical data away from the attack surface, physically and logically isolating it from access within AWS with a secure, automated operational air gap. Unlike standard backup solutions, access to management interfaces is locked down by networking controls and can require separate security credentials and multi-factor authentication for access.
The vault components are isolated from production, and access to the vault target - when the air gap is unlocked - is extremely limited and is located within a secure VPC. PowerProtect Cyber Recovery provides the synchronization of data between production systems and the secure vault creating protected additional copies. If a cyber-attack occurs, you can access data to recover critical systems and get the business back up and running quickly and with confidence.
Adaptive analytics and machine learning are provided by CyberSense. CyberSense's forensic tools help understand the integrity of your data by detecting, diagnosing and accelerating the recovery of clean data in a case of a cyberattack.

Customer reviews
Backup and recovery have improved security with VMware integration and faster restore times
What is our primary use case?
My use case for Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is mainly backup and recovery. We are a customer of Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery .
What is most valuable?
The best features that I like about the solution are the integration with VMware, which is a real plus. Additionally, I think the data domains are incredible. It helps my IT infrastructure be more secure mainly because we have replication of the backups on two physical sites, which is a plus.
What needs improvement?
Regarding the machine learning-based anomaly detection feature of Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery, we are not using that currently. I am not quite sure what you mean when you ask how I assess its ability to ensure data immutability in my IT infrastructure.
In terms of areas for improvement in Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery, I think the bare-metal part can be improved. However, the VMware and SQL functionalities are really good. My main problem is with the bare-metal recovery. The API can also be improved.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for four years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
I think if the API issues were resolved, I would rate the stability higher, but now it is a seven.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I find it scalable for my business needs. On a scale of one to ten, I would rate the scalability an eight.
How are customer service and support?
On a scale of one to ten, I would rate the technical support a seven or eight. You can give them eight because every time I have a call, they have a solution, so there is no problem with that.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Having used Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for four years, I can say it has helped my business significantly, especially compared to when we were using NetWorker , which was a pain in the ass. PowerProtect Data Manager is far better than our previous solution.
How was the initial setup?
The deployment was straightforward, so I had no problems with that. It took about two days for the deployment. This includes the installation of the data domain.
What about the implementation team?
Regarding maintenance for Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery, we are doing it ourselves. The updates and maintenance are not much work, but there are hiccups in the API of the backup solution, and we still have a ticket open with Dell for a long time now because the API is not responsive in some ways. The API can also be improved.
What was our ROI?
With Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery, I have noticed a reduction in recovery time of about twenty percent.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
Regarding pricing, I find it a lot cheaper than Veeam. With Veeam, you have to license every asset, but here you can also do it on capacity. Pricing-wise, it is better than Veeam, but I am not quite aware of the exact prices.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
At the moment, I am not comparing Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery with other vendors because I still have a license for the next two years, but in my previous job, I used Veeam, and to be honest, the bare-metal recovery of Veeam is better. The VMware integration is really good in PowerProtect Data Manager, but the bare-metal recovery is a little bit not straightforward.
What other advice do I have?
Before we start, my only question is that we are only using the Data Protection Manager , so not the full suite.
The users using the backup solution mainly consist of me and my colleague. We have integrated it into VMware, so users can restore or take backups of their own VMs, but I am not sure how many are using it because the backups are automatic, and for restores, I think some of them are using them.
I would certainly recommend this product for the backup of the VMs, but for the bare metal, I recommend it a little bit less. Overall, I give this solution a rating of eight.
Air gap protection has secured our backup workloads and provides strong ransomware defense
What is our primary use case?
My main use cases for Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery involve all the backups, typical workload, and backup workloads as we are moving to cyber recovery.
What is most valuable?
What I appreciate most about Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is its air gap functionality.
The main function of cyber recovery, which I find important, is the air gap protection, and that is the most important capability we are using against ransomware protection.
The benefit to my company is that our backup workloads are protected, and that is the best feature.
What needs improvement?
I think Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery can be improved by including the clean room as part of the product because currently, the clean room is an additional component, and if it will be part of the CRS, then it will be beneficial.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for one and a half years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Until now, I have not experienced any downtime, crashes, or performance issues with Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery because we have a support contract with Dell, and we have not faced any issues. If we encounter any critical issues, we have a four-hour on-site response time.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is already full-featured. The scalability in the storage is what I mean by scalability.
How are customer service and support?
Dell's support and customer service are excellent, which I would rate as five out of five. We have an account manager for enterprise solutions and local on-site support with a resident engineer positioned on-site.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
We did not consider any other solutions before choosing Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery because we are currently using the Dell backup solution, and it is the most aligned with the CRS. We never used any other solutions before this and directly implemented the CRS.
What was our ROI?
The biggest return on investment when using Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery comes from its ransomware protection feature.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I am not commenting on the price, setup cost, or license because I am a technical person and do not have knowledge about the cost. My management is deciding that part.
What other advice do I have?
Beyond just Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery, our company is an enterprise user of the complete Dell solution, including PowerProtect Data Domain , PowerProtect Data Manager, PowerMax , PowerStore , and VxRail solutions. All of our products and storage systems are from Dell.
If companies are using the PowerProtect solutions, such as PowerProtect Data Domain and NetWorker or PPDM, then it is beneficial to connect with Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for ransomware protection.
I would rate this review an 8 out of 10.
Ransomware attacks have been contained and clean data restores are now guaranteed
What is our primary use case?
Clients primarily use Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery to ensure they can restore from any ransomware attacks, creating a form of protection that guarantees customer restoration in the event of a ransomware incident.
What is most valuable?
One of the key advantages of Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is the isolation capability, which is very important, along with the intelligence that occurs through analytics taking place inside the vault. The second advantage is immutability. I have two main benefits from deploying Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery: early detection in case of an attack and fast restoration. With early detection, if ransomware attacks occur, the analytics in the vault will analyze data and identify threats early once they are detected. This ensures that attackers will not remain inside the customer network for an extended period. The second advantage is restoration, as I can guarantee that the data inside the vault will be clean and can be restored quickly using a golden copy that has been identified as clean. Unlike in normal backup scenarios where there might be hundreds of backups with no certainty about which one is clean, we have a clean backup copy already identified for quick restoration. Additionally, by creating a clean room, I can restore critical VMs directly from there, allowing for faster restoration rather than waiting to clean the infrastructure first.
What needs improvement?
I do not see any significant negatives in Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery, but if we could create some bundles for SMB customers, that would be useful, especially since it is primarily targeted at enterprise customers.
From a technical perspective, I believe the solution is perfect and does not need additional features. However, AI integration is a great idea that could help significantly. We are currently using CyberSense, but it would be beneficial to deploy an AI model inside the vault for more accuracy and faster restoration by scanning the data for any anomalies or unusual behavior.
For how long have I used the solution?
I confirm that I have been working with Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for about five years, and in general, I have worked in this domain for about ten years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is stable and reliable.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Regarding scalability, I can scale Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery freely without significant limitations.
How are customer service and support?
For customer support from Dell, I would rate them nine points out of ten due to the crucial role they play in projects, helping customers restore their data.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
In my company, we have used competitors like Rubrik , Cohesity , and Acronis, but I do not engage much with them. Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery has the most complete vision on this topic, and the NIST certification ensures 100% data isolation compared to other vendors.
How was the initial setup?
The deployment procedure for Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery requires some skills. I cannot say it is complex, but it does require some certified resources to perform efficiently.
What about the implementation team?
Currently, about 90% of the projects are deployed by Dell, but certifications are available for partners and customers to manage deployments as well.
What was our ROI?
It is possible to observe ROI with Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery because the costs incurred from paying ransoms or decrypting data will be much higher than the solution price itself, providing customers with confidence in their last line of defense.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
I do not consider Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery to be expensive as it provides value relative to the ransom that would need to be paid to restore data and the difficulties faced after an attack. It is crucial to have this solution because ransomware attacks are common. I suggest having special bundling for SMB customers.
What other advice do I have?
The administrative interface of Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is user-friendly.
The ability of Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery to automate data recovery tasks is effective. Once a problem arises, I can restore the data directly inside the VMs in the vault due to having a clean space available.
I work with data encryption in Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery, which is very important to ensure that only the right authorized persons are accessing the data, a very important feature for our customers.
Even though I believe bundles for SMB customers and AI improvements could be developed, I still give it maximum points. I give this product a review rating of 10.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
Recovery from cyber attacks has become faster and more reliable with strong data isolation and encryption
What is our primary use case?
My main use case for Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is total resiliency against cyber attacks.
What is most valuable?
The feature I like the most about Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is that we get top-of-the-line cyber attack scanning, and we get total retention locking on our media.
The benefits of those features for our company are that we know we can recover from a cyber attack at any time.
What needs improvement?
As for how the solution can be improved, I would like the features to be more integrated, and I have discussed that with our account team. I would like more visibility into what is going on with the individual backup images and how they are being scanned, so there are some automation and visibility features that could be enhanced.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been using Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery for just a few years.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
The stability and reliability of Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery are very good, as we have not had any outages on it, just a couple of minor issues but nothing major.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
Our solution is scalable, and we just scaled it recently by adding memory.
How are customer service and support?
Technical support has been pretty good; however, I would like to see better integration with Dell support and the third-party integration for the scanning part of it, specifically Index Engines, but we are getting there.
I would rate the support a six out of ten.
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
I was not using another solution that does the same before choosing Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery.
How was the initial setup?
The deployment process was straightforward because we partnered with Dell on the deployment, allowing us to get that done with Dell's assistance.
What about the implementation team?
Integrating Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery into our existing IT infrastructure is not that difficult because we were using Dell backups in our infrastructure.
What was our ROI?
The biggest return on investment for me when using Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is that if we had an attack, we would be able to recover in hours instead of weeks or months, which is a lot of risk reduction.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
The pricing for Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is acceptable due to our enterprise licensing agreement, so a lot of what we do is built into the license, although some of the licensing of the hardware could be better because as we go into the bigger hardware, the price per terabyte is a little more, but it is something we are working with our account team to address.
Which other solutions did I evaluate?
While I was using Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery, the team was looking at other solutions, but this was definitely the most resilient.
What other advice do I have?
My impression of the administrative interface of Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is that it is very user-friendly and pretty intuitive.
Regarding the solution's ability to automate data recovery tasks, we have not had to do mass recoveries yet, but we know we can do it with the tool and we do restores out of Networker.
Dell PowerProtect Cyber Recovery is absolutely able to protect our company's critical data.
We know how it protects our critical data because we are watching it all the time; it is locking snapshots, protecting and isolating our backups, and we know our backups are there if we need to recover.
We are using the recent feature addition for enhancing data encryption.
As far as I know, the feature has been good because it encrypts the data.
My advice for someone or some company that is considering the solution is to understand the manpower involved because it does require a lot of attention; it does not run by itself. Once it is set up, it does run, but it requires quite a bit of admin.
I would rate this product an eight out of ten overall.
