Essential open source operating system

  • August 02, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is a configurable, free and open-source operating system maintained by a non-profit community free of commercial interest that works both on new high-end hardware as well as on older machines to increase their long-term value for business or education.
What do you dislike about the product?
Community discussion/support can get a bit too technical sometimes. Device driver support has been problematic for certain peripheral devices in the past.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
As a professional user and web developer, I prefer an operating system that allows me to configure and fine-tune system settings and preferences beyond the usual end-user options. But I also need a system that provides a stable desktop environment suitable for productivity and development software. Ubuntu is a Linux distribution that combines both aspects out of the box.

One of the most stable Linux systems I ever used

  • July 25, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I am a big fan of Ubuntu, Why?
1. When I was entering into the linux systems from Windows system, I found Ubuntu most user friendly Linux, It is really easy to navigate through.
2. It has really vast support of software repository.
3. People opensourced lot of customizations for Ubuntu Desktop, You can completely transform into a system according to your needs.
What do you dislike about the product?
1. It has lot vast software repository, but it still misses lot of main stream applications like Gaming apps, But I think Ubuntu is purposed for different segment of users and it fulfills the purpose completely. But I want to see Ubuntu more richer and richer in terms of app support :)
2. It's definitely one of the most easiest Linux system to start, But it still has some learning curve, and yes you need to be aware of File system, I saw people hiting random commands and loosing data, So It has it's own learning curve to be pro.
3. I faced some issues related to hardware compatibility also, Like my laptop battery used to drain faster on Ubuntu.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
1. I think for most of the software developers, Ubuntu is first choice, because of it's simplicity yet being powerful with shell programming.
2.Ubuntu is famous for frictionless deployment, It is powering most of the cloud applications or services.
3. Whenever I am using Docker, I use Ubuntu first, because it has very rich and stable support for applications/utilities I need for most of the applications being deployed.

The last enterprise worthy linux standing

  • July 18, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It's the last opensoruce long term reliable enterprise worthy linux. The copetition has all moved to closed ecosystem tryign to force licencing models.
The installer is text mode by default.
What do you dislike about the product?
apt is clunky compared to things like yum
snap is filled with unmaintined bits of software than can be dangerously out of date.
Still to much a desktop OS thats problmatic on servers.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use it in the sever space primarilty at our scale out storage tier. It's fairly easy to strip down for use in a server role and have good ceph support. We moved over as we needed a long term support as we see 5+ years as part of our storage archtecture in it's primary role and do not expect to look at major updates during that time.

Ubuntu Desktop gives me the freedom to use good quality Open Source software without falling into piracy. I have been able to use WEB Server tools, as well as Graphic Design tools, and in the family environment, have a very versatile entertainment center.

It's easy to use, stable, secure, free and open source, and it has a large community to support and help with any questions or issues.

The GNOME desktop environment is not customizable; if you want to change the look of the desktop, you have to install a different desktop environment or tweak the settings manually.

I think that Ubuntu provides the best server for virtual machines and the process of installation is also very easy. It has a simple user-friendly interface so that experienced users can use it very easily. Ubuntu is fast in comparison to Windows and one of the best things about Ubuntu is that it is an open-source and free platform, anyone can use it.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is almost nothing that is don't like about Ubuntu, but I think the Ubuntu interface is hard for new users who used to work on Windows.

Ubuntu is providing free of cost services unlike Windows and Mac, and as well as it is very fast and runs code efficiently without any lag.

Dependable and Versatile

  • June 30, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu Desktop is a superb operating system deserving all five stars. I've been using it for a while, and I'm always impressed by how well it works and how versatile it is.

This operating system was created with the user in mind as soon as Ubuntu Desktop was installed. New and seasoned users can easily traverse the interface because it is sleek, contemporary, and user-friendly. The GNOME desktop environment is integrated, offering a simple, intuitive experience that boosts productivity and reduces distractions.

The consistent reliability of Ubuntu Desktop is what sets it apart. Even when performing demanding jobs, I've only sometimes experienced crashes or system failures. Users that respect the safety of their data can rest easy knowing that regular updates keep the system current and secure.

The extensive software catalogue of Ubuntu Desktop is one of its most notable aspects. Applications ranging from office tools to multimedia software and development environments are available through the Ubuntu Software Centre. In addition, including Snap and Flatpak packages broadens the software ecosystem and guarantees that customers may access the most recent and cutting-edge programmes.

I would definitely recommend it.
What do you dislike about the product?
There's not much I dislike about Ubuntu Desktop, but they can focus on this feedback.
Ubuntu Desktop's focus on stability and reliability sometimes delays support for cutting-edge hardware features or bleeding-edge software technologies. Users seeking the latest hardware support or bleeding-edge software may need to consider alternative distributions or wait for official updates.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I've been using Ubuntu Desktop for years, and it continues to impress me with its stability and reliability. I rarely encounter any crashes or system issues, making it a highly dependable choice.

Smooth research experience

  • June 27, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
How Baremetal it is. It's extremely light and very customisable making it an essential in most research environments. Not to mention how open source it is. Most software run on Ubuntu too.
What do you dislike about the product?
It can sometimes be too Baremetal. Can't really play games on it. Requires admin log in for way too many things. Some aspects can be a bit more user friendly. Otherwise okay.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Open source light operating system that i can boot on a very normal and somewhat lightweight computer. Most software works based off of unix. I have also been fascinated with the inodes concept that unix uses for memory storage.

Operating system that I use for laboratory

  • June 15, 2023
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The installation process of Ubuntu server is very pleasant, this is of great value when setting up a laboratory for tests, since it speeds up the availability of the server where the tests will be carried out, whether it is a web server or another use
What do you dislike about the product?
I would say that to a large extent, the negative point would be the constant updating of the operating system, this is done by a server that cannot be used most of the time as a server for a service in production, due to the constant need to update the OS.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Effective alternative for carrying out test laboratories and considerably reduced the time invested in setting up servers, giving more time to technical staff to maintain themselves in testing the service for which the server was set up
