Solid product, but still needs work

  • May 15, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
front page that shows a parentage of addresses available, this gives you a good snapshot of your scopes
What do you dislike about the product?
Some more options would be nice, being able to perform dhcp functions like reserving addresses, checking device mac address, etc.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are able to monitor our dhcp scopes without actually jumping on the servers and checking, also it's nice to get alerts.

Good detailed product--at a price

  • April 27, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Full range of features, alerting capabilities, the breath of supported devices
What do you dislike about the product?
The cost mostly, and their sales force--very, very pushy
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Instant notifications of downed devices, hardware or application issues--through a single interface
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If you have the budget, SW is a wonderful product. We don't use it for many of our devices (especially Cisco netflows) just because of the costs. If you use the app monitoring tools, it can give you great insight into your applications, ie VMware and Windows. And the Virtualization Manager is a great add-in with a deep-dive into your hypervisor, but again, it's oppressively expensive.

What do you like best about the product?
Proactive alerts helped me reduce downtime. PerfStack allows me to drag, drop, and overlay performance metrics from our systems data and multiple sources and data types on a single chart.
What do you dislike about the product?
I can't say any dislike about the product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Analyzed storage I/O performance and made forward plans according to these reports.

SolarWinds SAM is so-so

  • April 24, 2018

What do you like best about the product?
The ability to monitor scheduled tasks. Our company performs a lot of automation through windows scheduled tasks and cronjobs, monitoring those task for failures allows the IT department to not be caught off guard.
What do you dislike about the product?
The way the licensing scheme work out. Anytime you monitor something (a task, a service, a process, or daemon), it consumes a massive amount of licenses. And it doesn't even monitor IIS all that well.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
The monitoring of scheduled tasks and cronjobs in our server environment, have lowered the amount of times that IT is alerted that something is down. Now IT can catch the issue and resolve it, sometimes before the end user is even aware.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
If your sole job will be to deal with this product, then you may have the time to tweek it and get it running the way you want it. But for admins with other things to do, this product can be a little time consuming to get oriented the way you want it.

Server and Application Monitor review by Naren

  • April 21, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I liked that with the SAM templates we can monitor the appications like AD, DNS, DHCP, etc. We can also monitor the generic Windows services as well. It helps to monitor the applications to avoid down time and speed up the resolution as well. The new feature AppStack introduced and help you to look at the issues directly which shows in Red Color. When you hover the mouse point, you can see the health of the server or resource or application.
What do you dislike about the product?
We exerienced some of the parameters were not available like, mails queue count. It utilizes more resources, if we assign to more number of devices and forget to remove them, when they are not in use.

For agentless monitoring services, we need to provide the WMI credentials to connect to the server

A better application monitoring should be provided for Exchange, IIS and SQL.

What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Monitoring of windows services, CPU and Memory, etc.

I see the main benefits as Proactive alerting, avoid down time, speed up troubleshooting, proactive alerting, access to detailed performance metrics

Easy to Configure and easy to use the templates
Recommendations to others considering the product:
The Server and Application Monitor (SAM) module is easy to configure and use. I would recommend that it is best for Windows servers. You can do medium level monitoring for Exchange, IIS and SQL.

What do you like best about the product?
Ability to drill into the nodes and quickly determine the cause of high utilization or an outage.
What do you dislike about the product?
It takes time to get everything setup and configured to meet your needs, but once it is done it is worth it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
High traffic utilization, link changes and types of traffic on our network.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Ensure you understand how the Node count works, so you don't get in a bind for your licenses.

Solawinds IPAM needs more flow

  • April 06, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
the tool is very basic, and can import tab and comma delimited files. It has a built-in IP address scanning tool. It is SNMP enabled and can log new IP's that get discovered with ping sweeps.
What do you dislike about the product?
you need a strong server to be able to run the whole solar winds suite.
IF you don't, it will run at a very low unsatisfactory speed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
its important to have a tool that can not only track IP addresses, but can import your documentation prior to implementation. If you have tab and comma delimited files, you can import that data.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
needs to be less resource intensive

Another way to measure cloud metrics

  • April 04, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Each task is not more than 2 clicks away, I like the fact that the interface gets right down to business with alerts and attributes tab.
What do you dislike about the product?
Not the easiest to use configuration and setup. Not as good as NPM or WUG, but it gets the job done at a lower cost.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We are an e-commerce company with the primary focus on protecting our data. I like the fact that this is pay per use based on the number of data streams.

Decent experience with Solarwinds

  • March 19, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
I like the ability to handle all kinds of alerts in a matter of two clicks or less.
What do you dislike about the product?
I dislike the support team's quality. Often the help comes copy-pasted from their KB articles, so there isn't much personalized help. The service desk ticketing site that it connects to is also a bit slow in syncing up with the dashboard so tickets don't close efficiently even when the alert has gone away.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Patch Management. Remote Access. Managed Antivirus. Disk space checks. Performance Monitoring. All are beneficial. Even when a server is down, we get the alert.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Beware of support. Beware of lag between sync of dashboard and service desk. Glitch between background manager and backup check on dashboard.
