SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor

  • January 09, 2018
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Solarwinds allows my department to rest easy knowing that if something does go down, we will know about right away.
What do you dislike about the product?
There really is not that much to dislike about this software. Only downside I can say would probably be needing to constantly update it with "nodes" but that is on my side only.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Peace of mind to know that our servers are being monitored and checked for health.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Check to see how many nodes you actually will be monitoring and choose the correct licensing to make things as easy as possible.

SolarWinds SAM

What do you like best about the product?
Allows me to see at a glance what is working and what isn't. Good alerting and I can configure common fixes to run when an alert is triggered. I can also configure an e-mail to be sent on critical failures to activate on-call engineers.
What do you dislike about the product?
Can be a bit complicated to set up until you get used to it.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Systems monitoring of critical systems to ensure maximum up-time and swift response to failures.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Download a free trial and have a go. There's plenty of support available from some very knowledgeable folk.

Very useful software for monitoring our own applications

  • December 30, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We love the integration with both AWS (Amazon Web Services) and Microsoft Azure, along with the ability to build our own monitors. We've been able to add custom Glassfish and Tomcat monitoring.
What do you dislike about the product?
Still very Microsoft focussed, it would be good to see more attention to linux. More focus also needed on removing Network Atlas
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We need timely and accurate monitoring of our business applications. Our support team have been able to move away from the unreliable Nagios system, they now have a dashboard that shows them exactly what they need.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Download the trial and give it a try.

SAM is an intuitive and feature rich monitoring solution

  • December 29, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
We bought SAM largely for the built-in monitoring, but it has turned out to be very easy for us to build our own templates to monitor applications specific to our environment. In addition, the Thwack community permits the sharing of templates which makes the solution even more powerful.
What do you dislike about the product?
I find the licensing model to be less than ideal. I don't hate it, but I just don't love it. But, to be honest I have not got a better solution either.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
SAM has been an important tool in our strategy to be more proactive and discover/resolve minor issues before they blow up into huge issues. Abilities such as alerting on a service crashing and automatically restarting it, or specific app templates for Exchange and SQL with a large number of items to monitor give deep insight into these mission critical apps. In addition the built in documentation does more than just tell you when something passes a threshold, it gives a reference to what the parameter means so you can determine if you need to adjust the threshold for your environment.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
I do not have extensive experience with competitive products, but you should take a look at this solution.

What do you like best about the product?
Solar winds is amazing for keeping all your clients up and running. We have been able to stop problems before they were huge issues because of the monitoring.
What do you dislike about the product?
The dashboard is laid out in what I consider to be an unconventional way, but it's tolerable.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Solar winds is amazing for keeping all your clients up and running. We have been able to stop problems before they were huge issues because of the monitoring.

What do you like best about the product?
Almost real time alerts of system failures, to aid in call volumes coming in.
What do you dislike about the product?
Too much information sometimes displayed.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I monitor all systems for failure, disk usage, etc... it helps to know when something is down, so I know that users are about to start calling.

Performance monitoring at another level

  • December 27, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
SolarWinds Server and Application Monitor allows monitoring to become much more than traditional monitoring. With SAM you can see the actual performance of the applications - what the end user experiences, not just what's happening on the hardware. There are many built in monitors so getting started is actually very easy.
What do you dislike about the product?
SAM is simple to set up, but can be complex to fully implement. This is actually a feature and a good aspect of the system, but can be difficult or discouraging for new users to the product.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We now monitor what the users see. In other monitoring solutions you can see metrics on the servers and up/down status, but not really see performance. With SAM we get both.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Download the free trial and see for yourself.

What do you like best about the product?
Out of the box, you are ready to monitor your entire network. The agentless design makes it easy to deploy across your network
What do you dislike about the product?
Monitoring your entire environment may require multiple pollers There is a limit of 12,000 components per poller, which can be used up quickly depending upon what is being monitored.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We were able to monitor all servers, their application status, and hardware components with a single tool
