United Airlines Builds Intelligent Airport Project on AWS to Increase Operational Efficiency, Reduce Emissions

In this re:Invent 2021 presentation featuring United Airlines, learn how the airline built the United intelligent airport project to transform its operations and customer experience using Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Jason Birnbaum, chief information officer at United Airlines, explains in this video how during the pandemic United Airlines saw an opportunity to use that time to build better and more efficient operations via enhancing its ground service equipment capabilities across more than 36,000 assets.

“This is an example where we are using the data and unleashing the data in real time, we're not storing it in a database. We're directing it to where it needs to go like a hose, trying to make sure that we use this data in motion to drive real-time decisions,” says Birnbaum. “The ultimate goal is that we create a great experience for our customers. And we do that by helping them orchestrate what's happening when they get to the airport, they can get through the airport, get on their way, and get to where they're going.”

Using AWS IoT Core and other services, United Airlines is able to process data from 20,000 sensors at a rate of 28 gigabytes per minute. With less than $10 million invested in its intelligent airport initiative, United Airlines achieved $120 million in savings, up to 7 percent reduced emissions, and 1.3 million personnel hours saved.

Learn how to enhance traveler satisfaction and operational excellence by creating connected experiences on AWS.
