The Health AI Hub consists of three areas
Use Cases and Success Stories
Leading organizations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, including the Catalan Health System, University Hospital Essen – IKIM, and the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, are already leveraging the Health AI Hub.
Catalan Health System
“This is a large-scale implementation with a focus on delivering practical value.”
— Dr. Oscar Solans, Functional Lead for Digital Health – Catalan Ministry of Health
The Catalan Health System is deploying AI-driven solutions that help healthcare professionals access clinical information in a more secure and natural way. As part of this transformation, a generative AI virtual assistant — named AXIA — is being introduced across the healthcare system, starting to reshape how 20,000 professionals interact with information. Built on AWS technology, this large-scale implementation will span 400 primary care centers and represents a significant advancement in healthcare AI adoption.
This marks the first use case within the broader AI agent strategy of the Catalan Health System. It also lays the foundation for evolving the current chatbot into specialized assistants tailored to specific areas, the unique nature of the clinical information being managed.

Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM) at University Medicine Essen
“It’s a perfect example of how AI can transform research into real clinical tools quickly.”
— Prof. Jens Kleesiek, Director, IKIM
Physicians and researchers from the University Hospital Essen's Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM) are rebuilding their digital pathology research into a production-ready solution on AWS within days. The team created CellOnCloud, a machine-learning model that automatically quantifies and classifies cells in pathology slides to address critical challenges in cancer.
- Developed CellOnCloud, an AI-based pathology research tool, in just 72 hours

Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center
“We’re helping oncologists make faster, better-informed decisions to improve patient outcomes.”
— Liat Arad, Chief Transformation Officer
Through an innovative collaboration with AWS, I-NEXTDATA at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center is revolutionizing oncology care workflows using advanced AI technology. Using the Health AI Hub and AWS services such as AWS HealthScribe, Amazon HealthLake, and Amazon Bedrock, they were able to streamline complex clinical decision-making processes. The system has delivered measurable impact across multiple areas:
- 50% reduction in documentation time
- 30% improvement in treatment plan optimization
- 40% faster guideline review
- 25% better clinical trial matching

Architectural Patterns
Healthcare organizations are exploring applications for generative AI in the following areas:
Summarization
Foundation models have shown promise in quickly summarizing large amounts of medical information to highlight the most salient details for clinicians. Healthcare organizations are exploring how these AI systems might condense lengthy patient records into focused summaries that make clinicians better informed to deliver quality care.

Note drafting
Clinical documentation and communication with patients are vital aspects of care, yet also time-intensive. Clinicians spend considerable portions of their day writing notes, letters, and other textual artifacts - a leading factor cited in burnout and reduced patient capacity. Foundation models present an opportunity to provide relief. By ingesting audio recordings, transcripts, and texts of clinician-patient interactions, AI systems can synthesize draft clinical notes, saving providers hours of writing time.

Data exploration
Clinicians and researchers often have complex questions about patient populations that require deep dives into multifaceted health data to answer accurately. Emerging foundation models that index diverse unified health data assets show promise in initially illuminating answers to complicated clinical and research questions without requiring upfront bioinformatician consultation. Such tools could empower healthcare professionals to freely iterate through inquiries, gaining directional insights and sharpening their thinking.
