Latest AWS Africa (Cape Town) Region Certifications
The AWS Africa (Cape Town) Region launched with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certifications. Customers can use the AWS Africa (Cape Town) Region to further strengthen security posture and environments with the ISO-certified services available in the region.

The AWS Cloud Credits for Research Program supports researchers who seek to: Build cloud-hosted, publicly available, science-as-a-service applications, software, or tools to advance their research and that of their community; Perform proof-of-concept or benchmark tests evaluating the efficacy of moving research workloads or open datasets to the cloud; And train a broader community on the usage of cloud for research workloads via workshops or tutorials.
The AWS EdStart program provides EdTech startups with resources to quickly get started on AWS – including AWS Promotional Credits, access to training, and support. AWS EdStart is a global community of like-minded people and companies that are solving complex educational problems.
Customer success stories
The AWS eKasi initiative aims to build technology skills in South African townships that are sustainable, with skills transfer being paramount. Through AWS eKasi, we work with our public sector customers to develop skills for the township, in the township, delivered by the township.
Automated Fleet Solutions (AFSOL) works with the Western Cape Provincial Government in South Africa to provide an intelligent transport system to better monitor and manage public transport.
Sentech provides the national broadcasting signal distribution (BSD) and telecommunications for all South African television and radio stations. The AWS Cloud gives them the flexibility to experiment and deliver solutions, drastically reducing the cost of deploying channels.
GovChat became the official platform for citizen engagement with the South African government in 2018. To provide speed of delivery and scalability while keeping costs down, GovChat turned to AWS.
University of Pretoria
The scale and complexity of the LMS used by the University of Pretoria allows them to focus on the user experience realizing cost savings and robustness with little downtime.
SkillUp allows students to get one-on-one expert help from trained and experienced tutors. Students now have direct access to the tutor through a web interface, so that lessons can be administered at their convenience. SkillUp uses the breadth and depth of AWS services to innovate and experiment with technology.
Lightbulb is an EdTech company that creates learning management systems (LMS) to address the unique needs of the South African education system. Lightbulb LMS allows students to easily communicate with subject-matter experts through mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and other devices. Being able to offer an elastic expansion of services was one of their key reasons for choosing AWS.
In 2019, the Tshwane University of Technology (TUTEH) turned to AWS to build a cloud-based platform to make it simpler to manage properties. AWS Professional Services worked with the TUTEH IT team over a period of 20 days to deliver T-RES, a serverless cloud platform for property administration.
University of the Witwatersrand
The University of the Witwatersrand is a multi-campus South African public research university situated in the northern areas of central Johannesburg. Using the AWS Cloud, students are able to have an unparalleled user experience due to fast and locally cached content, and zero-rated data charges.
GirlCode strives to alleviate South Africa’s high unemployment rate through targeted technology skills and capacitation initiatives, including a GirlCoder Club, workshops, and a Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) accelerator. They facilitate collaboration between women from divergent backgrounds to create innovative and sustainable solutions.
