RDS SQL Server in-region read replicas give you the ability to offload RDS/EC2 SQL Server read workloads to achieve high availability (HA). RDS SQL Server cross-region and cross-AWS-accounts read replicas allow deployment of disaster recovery (DR) with low RTO/RPO, and to achieve ransomware protection for your RDS SQL Server and EC2 SQL Server Standard, Enterprise and Web edition databases.

You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance size you run the software on. Each dimension maps to a specific instance type, so pricing scales with the compute capacity you choose. The t3.medium option covers lighter workloads, while the general-purpose families (m5, m6a, m6i, m7a, m7i) offer a range from large through 8xlarge for growing replication needs. The compute-optimized c7i options (4xlarge and 8xlarge) suit heavier processing. Larger instance sizes carry higher hourly rates. You select the instance that fits your throughput, then billing follows actual usage hours.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does the hourly rate I select map to, and how is it counted?
Each dimension maps to one running EC2 instance type. You pay per hour that the instance runs. The software runs inside your own cloud network, so replication happens in your VPC. Larger instance sizes carry higher hourly rates, so you pick the size that fits your replication throughput.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped, for example during idle periods?
Software charges accrue only while the instance runs. A stopped instance stops the hourly software meter. Note that AWS may still bill underlying storage for a stopped instance, but the software licence meters running hours only. You can stop the instance to pause software billing.
How does instance choice affect cost as my replication needs grow?
You select one instance type as your billing dimension. The t3.medium fits lighter workloads. The m5, m6a, m6i, m7a, and m7i families range from large through 8xlarge. The c7i options handle heavier processing. To scale, you move to a size with more compute, which changes the hourly rate you pay.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. Once the instance is running, and port 80 opened in the security group, connect to it by pointing a browser to the public DNS root URL (or IP) at default www port 80. Login with user: admin, initial temporary password: {EC2 Instance ID}.
