Tungsten Replicator for Kafka Targets is a replication engine that provides high-performance and improved replication functionality into Apache Kafka. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the "Tungsten Replicator for MySQL Extraction" AMI to provide a full end-to-end, real-time, data replication pipeline.
Alternatively, it is also available as a stand-alone, commercial product with support that can be downloaded from the Continuent website with a valid customer agreement.
What does Tungsten Replicator do?
Tungsten Replicator provides data replication from MySQL, MariaDB & Percona Server, including Amazon RDS MySQL and Amazon Aurora, to high-performance data analytics engines to derive insight from big data for better business decisions.
More specifically, it supports real-time data replication into MySQL (all versions), Oracle, PostgreSQL, AWS RedShift, Hadoop, MongoDB, Kafka and Vertica. We have an AMI for each of these targets available here on AWS.
This AMI supports replication into Apache Kafka only, and requires a running Zookeeper instance.
Who typically uses Tungsten Replicator?
Tungsten Replicator customers are typically SaaS, e-commerce, financial services, gaming and telco companies who rely on MySQL, MariaDB, Percona Server (and Continuent) to cost-effectively safeguard billions of dollars annual revenue.
Highlights
Tungsten Replicator features: platform agnostic, real-time heterogenous replication between MySQL and Apache Kafka.
The enhanced functionality and information provided by Tungsten Replicator allows for global transaction IDs, advanced topology support such as star, and fan-in, and enhanced latency identification.

Try this product free for 14 days according to the free trial terms set by the vendor. Usage-based pricing is in effect for usage beyond the free trial terms. Your free trial gets automatically converted to a paid subscription when the trial ends, but may be canceled any time before that.
Pricing is based on actual usage, with charges varying according to how much you consume. Subscriptions have no end date and may be canceled any time. Alternatively, you can pay upfront for a contract, which typically covers your anticipated usage for the contract duration. Any usage beyond contract will incur additional usage-based costs.
Additional AWS infrastructure costs may apply. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator to estimate your infrastructure costs.
You pay by the hour based on the EC2 instance type you run this software on. Each dimension maps to a specific instance size, from small general-purpose types to large multi-core machines. Pricing scales with the compute capacity you choose. Larger instances cost more per hour, reflecting added CPU and memory. You can pick the instance that fits your replication workload and change it as your needs shift. Billing follows actual hours of use, so you pay only while the instance runs. There is no upfront commitment or fixed term with this hourly model.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
What does one billed unit represent in this hourly pricing?
Each unit is one hour that a chosen EC2 instance type runs the software. The instance type you pick, such as a general-purpose or multi-core machine, sets the hourly rate. You are billed per running hour of that instance, counted from launch until you stop it.
Am I charged when the instance is stopped or powered off?
Software charges apply only while the instance runs. A stopped or powered-off instance stops accruing the hourly software fee. Underlying AWS storage or other resources may still bill separately, but the software meter tracks running time alone.
What does this product replicate, and does it store my data?
Tungsten Replicator for Kafka Appliers moves replication data from source databases to a streaming platform. It does not store your data. Your data stays inside your own databases and environment. The software manages replication; you remain responsible for securing and encrypting your databases.

An AMI is a virtual image that provides the information required to launch an instance. Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) instances are virtual servers on which you can run your applications and workloads, offering varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking resources. You can launch as many instances from as many different AMIs as you need.
By default, the AMI will launch with a 40Gb partition assigned to /opt/continuent. The software and associated logs will be generated here, therefore you should review the required storage space for this partition based on your activity levels. You should account for, at least the same amount of space used by your binary logs within the retention period of your source database.
Upon launch, connect to the host as the rocky using your preferred choice of Terminal application.
Issue the following command 'sudo su - tungsten' and the launch and setup wizard will automatically commence.
