Overview
As the pace of technological change accelerates, enterprises are facing increasing pressure to modernize their technology estates. Legacy systems, technical debt, and siloed data have become significant barriers to agility and innovation. An Accenture study confirms that only 4 in 10 companies report to having unlocked the expected benefits of shifting to cloud services. To truly transform the technology foundation and capabilities of an enterprise, a more holistic and strategic approach is required.
The Accenture AWS Enterprise Modernization GPS is designed to lead organizations towards a deeper, more strategic modernization journey. This tool is a unique offering developed by the Accenture AWS Business Group (AABG), a collaborative team of Accenture, a global leader in digital transformation, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), the world's most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform. This tool provides enterprises with a structured, analytics-driven approach to assess their current technology estate and identify Modernization Opportunities.
Enterprise Modernization
Modernization is the process of transforming existing applications and infrastructure into higher-value, cloud native services. Enterprises modernize through innovation to maximize the outcomes of cost efficiency, business agility, staff productivity, operational resilience and sustainability. These outcomes are achieved through superior performance of an enterprise's technology estate, characterized by scalability, compute efficiency, enhanced security, and many more, all of which are achieved through a well architected cloud framework.
AWS classifies 6 primary modernization pathways, including: --Move to Cloud Native - Implement architecture and process changes to break monoliths into microservices, enabling agile and scalable architectures. --Move to Containers - Transition to containerizing and orchestrating applications. --Move to Open Source - Movie Microsoft workloads to open source (Windows to Linux). --Move to Managed Databases - Leverage AWS's portfolio of purpose-built, cloud-based databases that support diverse data models. --Move to Managed Analytics - Data lake initiatives support data warehousing, big data processing, real time analytics, and operational analytics. --Move to Modern DevOps - Modern DevOps brings developers and operations closer by sharing ops tasks earlier and enhancing them with AI/ML.
The Enterprise Modernization GPS
At the heart of the Enterprise Modernization GPS lies the Modernization Index, a data-driven metric that quantifies the degree of modernization within an organization's technology estate. This index is derived from insights gathered across approximated 85 CloudWatch metrics, encompassing around 30 cloud services that have been flagged as non-modern by AWS. Each non-modern service identifies a Modernization Opportunity. Modernization Opportunities are defined by the technical benefits they enable and, in turn, the technical priorities they meet. These technical considerations drive the business impact that each opportunity holds, which is reflected by our 5 Modernization Value Creators: cost efficiency, business agility, staff productivity, operational resilience and sustainability. These Value Creators make up the Modernization Index and translate technical impacts into business value propositions, allowing executives to collaboratively visualize the impact of various modernization pathways and align technology investments with strategic business objectives.
The CloudWatch metrics gathering process is setup entirely within clients' AWS Organizations through deploying the 'Metrics Gathering Agent'. The metrics are made accessible to clients' private front-end portals by authorizing private access during the Sign Up process. Clients' metrics can remain forever private, in their AWS accounts, or they can choose to share their anonymized metrics with the Enterprise Modernization GPS to unlock benchmarking insights.
The Industry Lens, powered through anonymized metrics sharing, enables clients to understand how the modernization of their technology estate is progressing alongside their peers'. It enables enterprises to ensure they are keeping pace with their peers and the rapid evolution of technology.
As a takeaway, technical and business leaders can collaborate to create a Modernization Roadmap, prioritizing and planning when to act on their Modernization Opportunities. The roadmap integrates a set of 'paved pathways' ; proven modernization approaches identified by AWS ; to accelerate the journey.
