Overview
Scope:
- Analyze current cluster architecture, including node configuration, pod resource requests/limits, and horizontal/vertical scaling strategies using AWS Auto Scaling, AWS Compute Optimizer
- Analyze current monitoring setup (AWS CloudWatch, Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus, Amazon Managed Grafana) for its coverage and timeliness to report major issues
- Evaluate running workloads to identify bottlenecks in performance, improve scheduling, and optimize resource usage
- Assess RBAC, network policies, and pod security contexts for compliance with security best practices
- Assess existing CI/CD pipelines for Kubernetes, identifying opportunities for improvement in deployment automation, rollback strategies, and zero-downtime upgrades
- Review cluster costs and provide recommendations for cost savings, e.g., right-sizing node groups, using spot instances, and leveraging autoscaling efficiently
- Ensure the Kubernetes cluster and applications are configured for high availability, with robust backup and disaster recovery strategies using AWS Elastic Kubernetes Service
Tools:
- Open-source - Kube-bench for security checks, Prometheus & Grafana for monitoring and visualization, K9s for cluster resource management
- Cloud - AWS EKS Managed Node Groups
- Kubecost - provides visibility into Kubernetes spend, offering insights on cost-saving opportunities
- Datadog or New Relic for Kubernetes Monitoring - ensures performance and cost optimization by tracking node, pod, and cluster resource consumption

- Executive Summary with key findings and recommendations
- Optimization Action Plan with immediate improvements and long-term strategies
- On-call support proposal (if requested by the client this engagement can be used to start on-call services provided by STX Next’s team)
