Aider is an AI pair programmer for your terminal. Describe a change in plain English and Aider edits the right files in your git repository, then commits each change so you can review it or undo it. This Ubuntu 24.04 image installs Aider with a git workspace on first boot, with Session Manager access and no inbound ports.
Overview
Aider lets you code with a large language model the way you would with a teammate. You ask for a feature, a bug fix, a refactor, new tests or updated docs; Aider builds a map of your repository, decides which files to change, edits them and commits the result to git with a clear message. Every change is a normal git commit, so you keep full control with diff, review and revert. It works with the model provider you choose, including hosted APIs and OpenAI-compatible endpoints.
This image gives developers and small teams a dedicated cloud workstation for that workflow, inside their own account and separate from their laptops. Your code and your provider keys stay on an instance you control.
What is included: Aider 0.86.2 in its own Python 3.12 environment at /usr/local/bin/aider, a git workspace created on first boot at /var/lib/aider/workspace, the tree-sitter repository map that helps Aider work across large code bases, and a built-in self-check that confirms the installation without calling any model. No provider keys are baked in and no background service or listening port is added; every Aider session is started by you.
Getting started takes a few minutes: launch t3.medium (2 vCPU, 4 GiB RAM) with a 16 GiB or larger encrypted gp3 root volume and IMDSv2, attach an instance profile with AmazonSSMManagedInstanceCore, allow outbound HTTPS and keep inbound rules closed. Connect with Session Manager (you land as ssm-user), then run sudo -iu ubuntu bash /opt/sushi/docs/demo.sh to switch to the ubuntu account and verify the installation. Then export your provider key in your shell, cd into a git repository and run aider. The usage instructions and the linked Aider documentation cover every step.
Pricing: a software fee of USD 0.02 per running t3.medium instance-hour, with no product-imposed time, user or usage limit. EC2, EBS, data transfer and any model-provider charges are billed separately.
This is a repackaged open source software product wherein additional charges apply for independent AWS packaging, validation, maintenance and setup documentation. Aider is published by Paul Gauthier and contributors under the Apache-2.0 license; Software Sushi provides the image, setup guide and packaging support and does not claim upstream endorsement. The Aider source archive and license are kept on the instance. Snapshot your workspace volume for backup; a new image version does not migrate running instances.

Dimensions summary
You pay a single hourly software fee for each running instance on the recommended t3.medium size (2 vCPU, 4 GiB RAM). Billing is usage-based, so charges accrue only while the instance runs. There are no tiers or add-ons to choose between. AWS bills EC2, EBS storage, and data transfer separately from this software fee. Your chosen model provider also charges its own usage, since no model, credits, or provider keys are included. You bring those after launch.
Top-of-mind questions for buyers
The t3.medium size gives you 2 vCPUs and 4 GiB of RAM. Aider needs at least 4 GiB RAM to run. The image also expects an encrypted gp3 root volume of at least 16 GiB. That volume storage is billed by AWS, not in the software fee.
The hourly software fee accrues only while the instance runs. If you stop the instance, the software fee stops. Stopped instances may still incur AWS storage charges for the attached volume. Your model provider only charges when you actually call its models.
The fee does not include any model, model credits, or provider keys. You bring your own after launch. AWS bills EC2 compute, EBS storage, and data transfer separately. Your chosen model provider bills its own usage directly to you.

Usage instructions
- Launch t3.medium (4 GiB RAM, 16 GiB or larger encrypted gp3, IMDSv2) with an instance profile that has AmazonSSMManagedInstanceCore and outbound HTTPS. No inbound rules are needed.
- Connect: aws ssm start-session --target <instance-id>. You land as ssm-user; run sudo -iu ubuntu to switch to the ubuntu account and see the first-login guide.
- Wait for cloud-init, then run: sudo -iu ubuntu bash /opt/sushi/docs/demo.sh (expect SUSHI_CUSTOMER_DEMO_PASSED).
- Read /opt/sushi/docs/README.md. The CLI is /usr/local/bin/aider and the workspace is /var/lib/aider/workspace.
- Use your own provider key in a private shell (or a mode-0600 env file), or give the instance an IAM role for Amazon Bedrock as described in the guide. Then cd into a git repository and run aider.
