Overview
Reduce SQL Server infrastructure and licensing costs
Sarpedon Quality Lab provides independent SQL Server cost optimization and consolidation assessments designed to identify opportunities to reduce Microsoft SQL Server licensing and Amazon EC2 infrastructure costs. Many organizations migrate established database workloads to AWS without reconsidering server sizing, SQL Server editions, or deployment density, resulting in fragmented and underutilized environments. The assessment is led by Andreas Wolter, a former Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL Security Program Manager with more than 25 years of data-platform experience and Microsoft Certified Solutions Master credentials.
What we assess
This assessment relates specifically to self-managed Microsoft SQL Server workloads running on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). We analyze representative workload data and technical dependencies, including:
- CPU, memory, storage, and workload-utilization patterns
- SQL Server editions and edition-specific feature requirements
- Opportunities for EC2 rightsizing and SQL Server edition optimization
- Workload compatibility and safe consolidation potential
- Availability, performance, security, and operational requirements
- Systems that could be downsized, consolidated, retired, or restructured
The assessment goes beyond basic EC2 rightsizing by determining whether workloads can safely share infrastructure and whether proposed savings would introduce unacceptable performance, availability, reliability, security, or supportability risks.
Deliverables
You receive an evidence-based plan that includes:
- Resource Utilization Profile
- Consolidation Candidate and Cost-Saving Matrix
- Recommended target architecture
- Prioritized implementation roadmap
- Documented assumptions, dependencies, technical risks, and estimated cost-reduction opportunities
- Technical review session with your database and infrastructure teams
The resulting roadmap helps finance, cloud infrastructure, and database teams reduce total cost of ownership while preserving the operational requirements of critical SQL Server workloads. Actual savings depend on implementation decisions, commercial licensing terms, and future workload behavior.
Highlights
- Identify opportunities to reduce Amazon EC2 infrastructure and Microsoft SQL Server core-licensing costs through evidence-based rightsizing, consolidation, and edition optimization.
- Analyze actual CPU, memory, storage, and workload patterns to consolidate SQL Server environments without compromising performance, availability, or reliability.
- Receive a Resource Utilization Profile, Consolidation and Cost-Saving Matrix, recommended target architecture, and prioritized implementation roadmap.
