Dimensions summary
You pay by the hour for a Ruby on Rails image on Ubuntu 26. Pricing is not a set of tiers. Instead, each dimension maps to a specific AWS EC2 instance type you choose at launch. Top-of-mind questions for buyers
One hour equals one running hour of the EC2 instance type you select at launch, such as m5.large or c6i.metal. The software charge meters wall-clock time while the instance runs. Each instance you launch bills separately. Larger instance families and sizes carry a higher hourly software rate.
The software fee meters running hours only. A stopped or paused instance does not accrue software charges. You may still owe standard AWS charges, like storage for attached volumes, but those are separate AWS infrastructure fees, not the image software cost.
Two charges apply at once on the same bill. The image software fee is added on top of the standard AWS EC2 infrastructure charge for the instance you run. Both scale with instance size. Choosing a smaller instance lowers both the AWS charge and the software rate together.
